V*' Y' Sleepy Eye Correspondence Supt. Stewart, from Tracy, was in the city Monday, -,.: Our public schools opened Monday •morning with a tine attendance. Mr. A* G. Anderson of Springfield, was in the cicy yesterday, looking hale and hearty. Mr. W. Hoeger, of Owatoona has ac cepted a position in Mr. Sorvensen and Dehuffs stare as clerk. Mr. Hoerger comes yery heighly recommended. The missionary entertainment at the Baptist church Sunday evening was well attended. Old and young enjoyed themselves. Mr. John Strassburg,fl[of Lafayette, Nicollet Co., whiled away a few hours in our city last Sunday. Miss Louisa Dreyer, who has been visiting in Renville Co. for several weeks, returned home last week Friday. Miss Bell Redner and Miss Lou Ham mond, of Springfield, spent Sunday in our city. Mrs. VVm. Baker spent Sunday at Springfield, returning Monday morn ing. Miss Verra Ireland, who has been visiting with her aunt, Mrs. Murfin, returned to her home at Appleton Sat urday. Isaac Gallager, J. C. Zieske, John Xalbe and Mr. Wheeler all returned on Saturday from the Milwaukee encamp ment. The boys report a glorious time and express themselves as anxious to attend more of such reunions. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gieseke returned from their visit to Europe Monday even ing. The band was at the depot to es cort them home. Horace Eaton has moved his family to Morgan where they will make their fu ture home. Dick Smith has leased and moved into the residence of Mr. Eaton. Bendixen returned returned from Chicago Thursday morning. Mr. Frank Clague, who has been visiting his parents at Easton, Md., re turned to Springfield Friday morning. Messrs. Albert Blanch ard, and A. Bogen, of New Ulm, were up on busi ness, the fore part of last week. Miss Louisa Schmid left Monday morning for Sleepy Eye, to attend the Catholic school at that place. Mrs. E. Cady is visiting with friends at New Ulm. County Supt. J. B. Velikanje was in town Friday and Saturday, holding his regular examination of teachers. Miss Maud Cady, and Miss Mary Schields, who have been visiting friends at Winona, returned Friday evening. Mr. Henry Lilly, of New Ulm was the guest of Rev. J. H. Durbahn last week. A crew of men are at work laying new pipes from the C. & N. W. water tank to the Cottonwood river, F. Brand, an optician, is at H. O. Schleuder's this week. Have your eyes examined. Monday morning a steamer belong ing to Henry Essig set tire to a pile of straw. In the efforts to save the steam er from being consumed by the flames, Mr. Essig was badly burned about the hands and body. Mr. Albert Keii's cottage is nearly completed. The great event is to come off next week, Thursday. J. J. Kay is limping about on a cane. It's the rhuematism, John says. Mrs. G. Baker, of Sleepy Eye, is the guest of Mrs. J* C. Roth. NORT S A ITEMS. Dry weather for plowing and many of the wells in the vicinity are drying up. Mr. John Egan finished stacking wheat Saturday. Grain is turning ,out splendidly. J. B. Shilling, one of our prosperous far mers, threshed over 4400 bushels. Mike MeKowen has threshed 15 bush els of flax per acre. Good for you, Mike. Miss Schmidt, of Sleepy Eye, is the guest of the Misses Ryan. A birth-day party was given by Mr. B. C. Halpin Wednesday, the 28th., it being his sixty-second birth-day. Both old and young enjoyed themselves hugely. Mr. H. received many pres ents, among which was a pair of G. A. R. gold cuff buttons which he prizes highly. That he may live to enjoy many more birth-days is the wish of his many friends. HALF RATE TO THE STATE FAIR.
