!$ i..f I Springfield Correspondence Ernst Lauer of New (Jim was ia town last Saturday on business for C, H. Horn burg. W. Miller of Mankato who owns con siderable property in the vicinity of Springfield, registered at the Commer cial ba'tui day. Ochs and Jaehn were at Marshall last Wednesday on business. John Schneider celebrated his birth day in the circle of a few friends last Wednesday evening. Mrs. W. Vahle and child arrived from Mankato last Wednesday. August Jaehn has removed some of his old frame buildings on Marshall St. and will put up a brick store which he will occupy as soon as completed. The village council has ordered new sidewalks to be built on the south side of Redwood St. from O'Connell St. to the new school house. I. Sanford has sold his farm and will remove with his family to Springfield. Oscar Erickson will remove his office building onto H. Stoll's vacant lot until his new building is completed. The Congregational church and par sonage will be built in Brown's addi tion. Mrs. W. Schmid entertained a large party of friends at her home last Satur day evening, it being the 37th anniver sary of her birthday. Albert Enerson has gone to Water town, Dakota, to work in the Dakota Staats Zeitung office. Edward Reisner of Fairfield is the guest of Peter Eichen this week. Hammocks of every description and at prices to suit everybody at Schleu er's Jewelry Store. There are special reformatory pris ons but in fact, every penitentiary should be a reform atoryJ|prison. Spe cial reformatories are needed for the younger convicts, who can be more eas ily moulded and transformed by prep aration and discipline best suited to en able them to earn an honest living when they are released. But when such class ification does not exist, the same intel lectual, moral and industrial training must be wrought. Systematic habits and definite purpose may be acquired in a penetentiaiy under proper manage ment, as well as in a reformatory proper. But rare ability and tact are necessary to bring about good results. The best system is the graded one. The hardest, most exacting work must be given to the new comers. When they acquire patience, steadiness, fidel ity in that, promote them to a grade above, where the work is lighter, and where incentives to reformatory effort are given in the shape of defined priv ileges,to be acquired by the most worthy. Thus there could be several grades, each one more luminous with hope, and stimulous to faithful performance of du ty. These incentives may be adjusted to the taste and ambition of the convict. The system is in vogue in Prance and Belgium, and it has been tried with success in California and perhaps in other states. .Then, provision ought to be made, as is done in Massachusetts for the convict who has served his term. Under the generally prevalent system the ex-con vict finds, when turned loose in the world, that all doors are slammed in his face and it looks as if society really means to force him back into a life of crime. It is evident that the state can, in large measure, shield the ex-convict from this terrible dauger. A commis sion should look after the placing of all ex-convicts, who have given evidence of sincere reform, in positions where they can earn a living. By proper manage ment, employers could be found who would take these men into service on probation. There is no doubt that in a large majority of cases the reformation would be found to be permaneut. The question of the future of the released convict is one which ought to engage the most intelligent attention of pen ologists.—J. S. McLain in Minneapolis Journal. •'. if.'-' KrTV.r 9* S-5 •Ml Now Try Ihis, It will cost you nothing and will sure ly do you good, if you have a Cough, Cold, or any trouble with Throat, Chest or Lungs.
