From the Southern Democrat - " THE POSITION OF THE DEMOCRATIC ,: PARTY. Un to the time that Col. Benton had made his appeal, perfect union and harmony pre- ' vaiieu id wo ucwuuauK nuti id miasouri. We had gotten over the chock given the -nartv by means of his disorganizing course oa the Texas and Oregon question, and had just borne the democratic banner in the most gallant style in triumph, in the late States and Presidential canvassv Some few disorganizing spirits in St. Louis, had, it is true, endeavored to excite division, and smuggle their incendiary Barnburner doe trine; upon 'the District, through the Fred ericktown Convention. But it was "no go." The plot fell still low, notwithstanding the high nameof Col. Beuton had been invok ed, in a pamphlet, widely disseminated, signed by some fifty of his fast friends in St. Louis. Still the country could not realize the extent of his defection, until he came in person, and exploded his appeal, which fell like a bombshell upon the country; produc ing unqualified, amazement, Left to them elves, the Barnburneis could do' nothing; aided by him, some impression' has been made. Some who professf trong opposition to the Wilmot Proviso and the Barnburner mM v tuvsi jei uiiui ova vug we waovu w here to CoL Bentqn, its main stay and sup port in the South-west. Up to the time of his appeal, the party was united throughout the State; since that appeal, and in consequence of it, it is divi ded, and threatened with the evil conse quences of division discomfiture and dis pace. This state of things appeals strong ly to our patriotism and wisdom for a reme dy. What is to be done ? There is but one course to be pursued to save the party to unite on a platform of principle, and let men stapd or fall, according as they are for or against principle; that is, Jet our Uounty meetings and District Conventions, promul gate a platform of principle, nominate suit able men, ana unite and harmonize upon the nomination, without burdening the can vass without any issue as In men aside from principle. Through this course the party will succeed otherwise it must be deleal ed, and the State government, and the Re toresentatives in Congress pass into the hands of the whigs. And to whom will the party be indebted Tor the calamity? Certainly to Col. Ben tyn no one else. The Legislature had in structed him, in accordance with public sen- . timent throughout the State, so recently manifested in the State and Presidential contests, to oppose the Proviso and support the Missouri Compromise, as it had seen on him tiart iho mantfoctntinn nf strnnflr ivmiu. thy to say the least, withBarnburnerism on f the Territorial bill of 1848. . It was his du ty to have obeyed or resigned.'1 Yet ha boldlv anneals, savin? (lie Leeislattire had given him a "command" which he ,could Hot obey.1 He commenced his canvass to convert the State; but saw too soon that this was "no go." Now it is said that he will obey bis instructions, and vote agaiust the Proviso! - What rational object then had he in view by his appeal? Why could he not fatttetly have obeyed in the first instanced Now .that he has convulsed the State with his incendiary and inflammatory harangnes; and divided and distracted the party; we are to be told that at last be will obey Ins in tractions' The extent therefore of the - l. : u l. . C. i :n:.tJ .. """6 - .--.-.j ...... ' on the country and his party, can scarcely ne tneasurea, , 4 . He therefore can make no satisfactory apology for the evil he has done, by q o warf- loniy aiviaing anu aisiracung uie democrat " ic party. . . , . , Let us therefore organize without refer l: i ... .. upon the old platform of principle, and a caw bear our banner aloft and in triutnnh No other issue is worthy of a democrat, and whoever blindly forces any other, may ex- E act defeat, "Measures not men" should e the motto as in olden time.
