llcr life had made her what she was
n cynic She hail always seen her
iiKmiorucprcctaieii sneered at troililen
on as tho weaker vessel Her father
had brought np her only brother to
plory in tho fact Uiat he was a boy and
if he lived would one day be a man
when a child if asked how many chil
dren his parents had it had been his
habit to answer one he generally
added to be sure there is a air but
then girls dont count andpcaplo
laughed at him for a bright lad She
had taken a secondary position always
even in baby hood had been forced to
yield every with to the will of this in
cipient lord of creation In childhood
girlhood and early womanhood she
with her mother had been constrained
to serve and bow to these two She
did this under a mental protest always
at first she was unconscious that she
was protesting but at length this took
form and shipc and broko into open
rebellion She despised her father and
brother nnd hated all mankind Was
it narrow and contracted for her to
judge all by two lJrhaps it was but
it was natural They were the only
two that she knew intimately nnd we
tire apt to judge the unknown tho
known She had heard women railed
at always their mental rapacity scorned
their phjsical strength laughed at and
fhe a woman was angered iiitiltcil em
bittered She did not stop to consider
inai mocKers 01 women are always men
of ignorance and conceit men mllated
with themselves pufled up and bloited
with self pride did not stop to review
the growth of intellect and to discover
that in Nations of most refinement and
culture nnd education woinun met with
honor nnd esteem but in barbarous
Nations where the order of intellect
was low where men were debased and
brute force prevailed she was least
regarded These two men with arro
gance absurd in itself assumed to know
all that was to be known upon every
subject whil t she constantly fouuU
herself in potcsion of a fund of knowl
edge which to I hem was a closed book
She met them at every point with Millrn
silence was hitler hard tin ynipathctc
tr every one but her mother She be
lieved that all men considered women
made to serve them to make their
Ironies orderly and pleasant believing
thus her position as we have said was
but natural
When lin v s twenty four her mother
died In her la t hour the oru hid
though latiwt strength of laur character
revived Mic demanded a lawjer and
in the very proem oof her husband and
son willed her somewhat considerable
property wholly lo this her only
daughter and npjiointcd as her ole ex-
ccutoraeoniriarativestraiiger one wlioni
she had scarcely met a dozen time but
wlui e faee she trusted Standing on
tho border of the spirit land she hail
had the courage given her to do this
thing The daugltier sat holding the
hand growing steadily colder with a
look of despair the liubutiil stood with
u slow red creeping up to his white
forehead then living away and leav
ing him pile in the presence of this
rtrbukc whilst the son a coward in the
presence of death shivered and left the
room
That was a year ago In all that time
a MranVnr tn fill the place
urai goardians of her f daughter
tied him exceedingly tint he was a
true man and a this gentleman henca
accented the trust as such explaining
the fact by supposing domestic diflicul
tlea of whkh tho world was ignorant
Miss Shelley was also an enigma to
him She had wealth and home ap
parently everything to mako her happy
yet even in her most brilliant mood her
discontent her distrust were apparent
and her plcisantlv modulated voice
ways rung with sarcasm so character
istic was it or nor that he seemed even
to hear it in reading hor nolo
Mr Ilollistcr was a man of wealth
nnd standing though fortv years of
age ho was unmarried and made his
lumio with a sister It was evening
and they were in tho library when he
read her note Tho whole family wero
there His brother-in-law was reading
the paper his sister sewing and the
children at their games After reading
it he put it back in tho cnvclopo and
placed it again in his pockets thon a
moment after took it out and read it
again The second time that he was
replacing it ho caught his sisters eye
and with an odd smile on his grave
face handed it to her to read They
had bantered him about his singular
trust from the first and that he was in
terested in this girl ho frankly ac
knowledged thinking himself safe in
his very frankness His sister read tho
note twice also then sent the children
to bed When the last one had pone

the tone of one who Has settled a ques
tion to her entire satisfaction
There is to bo a wedding some
where cither sho is going to be mar

lie quietly ignored tho first supposi

ble It hardly seems possible that
Mr Shelley should think of marying so
soon he said
His sisters tono was full of raillery as
shorepliod But there is nothing to
render such a step impossible to Miss
Shelley
Ho called the next morning as re
quested She was waiting for him in
the reception room She sat by a table
her hamfe folded in her lap her face
pale and resolved he stood in tire door
a moment before she discovered him
when she did she arose and went toward
him with extended hand the grasp of
her hand was cordial but her voice was
cold I am sorry to have called you
from your business this morning it was
inconsiderate I should have asked you
to choo e your own time she said
Ho waived her apology and took the
chair she placed for him She carao
directly to tho subject as sho had
agreed
Mv father purposes bringinjr home
another wife a week from to day I
intend the day preceding to seek an
other abiding place tiin you recom

He did not ask her if she had con
sidered this step well if her mind was
fully made up It wns quite unneces
sary but be looked at her in his grave
kind wav As she met his look her
lip quivered she arose and paced tho
room bacK anil lorUi rcstlessry It was
a face that her motiicr hail trusted
why should she not trust it too Per
haps atl men did not thus scoff at her
sex There had never seemed mockery
in the courtesy of his manner it had
always seemed sincere and honest For
a moment her better nature her better
judgment conquered the net those
long years education put it under foot
the lip that had quivered curled in
stead She stopped beforo him with
all the pent up rebellion and anger of
the years on her face and in her atti
tude Do not think that I am
prompted to this act by any miserable
little jealousy for my mothers memory
nor yet for any such feeling on my own
score in renouncing the direction of
tiie household I have not a hard feel
ing in my heart for the woman who is
coming here I am only sorry for her
fjr long days and months and years
she will hear her kind railed at jeered
at as being feeblo in body and mind
she will as a consequence become
either weak or wicked Sec it has
made me wicked there is notone whom
I trust I shall not stay to seo her
wooed as a bride and sneered at as a
wife
Mr Ilollistcr looked at her in silent
surprise The pallor on her face
gave place to a sudden Hush the de
fiance of her mnuuer to that of
I UK your pardon when a thing is
trolden on it turns I should have

thit I was speaking to a man who h is

during a life lraie had treated these

which had penetrated even their self
complacency Thev were not comfort-

woman In that year she entertained
their guests for them Their meals
when alone wero silent and embar
rassed hence for relief they had con
stant visitors Among these she won
tho name of being a brilliant woman
but cold as an iceberg In that year
she cvon had oilers of marriage she
declined them each with thu horror
mid scorn that a freed slave would feel
for roifuwiid vossnlagc This very
scorn this very bitterness IkuI its
power men of intellect and culture
eagerly sought her society charmed by
her well stored tnitid her ready wit
and the underlying vein of dUhclicf

out At length when her mother
had been in tho better country a
whole year such respect did this
man show to custom and her mem

table iu the presence of his son as
if ho had lacked courage to tell bur
when alone that ho purposed bringing
jioinu a unuc sue urn not maKu a

silence full of miserable discomfort
Her face was thoughtful and quiet like
ono who considers before making a
decision then she said nnd thero was
not even a tremor in her voice Tho

posal
They both understood her as well as
if she had explained her plan The
same deep red that had crept up to his
forehead at tho making of his wifes
will did so now and tho same pallor
followed but ho said nothing The
son whoso manner until this past year
had been a perpetual sneer was silent
also and handled his fork nervously
That cvonine Mr Ilollistcr her execu

A week later Miss Shelley had
possession of one of the front
chambers in Mrs Gilders quiet
elegant home Sho felt this kindness
exceedingly sho was not accustomed
to such consideration Mr Ilolliater
was constantly at the home came in
every morning on his wav to business
and spent his evenings with them The
children depended on him so did Mr
and Mrs Gilder so did Mis Shellev
though she did not know it We are
all so constituted tint wo dctwnd on
some one no one m in or woman is
wholly independent
From the first of her mnkng her
home with them Miss Shellev did not
seek privacy Mrs Gilder cordially n
vited her to be at home and make the
general sitting roam hers as well and
sho did so silting in the window with
a bit of embroidery iu her lap or an
open uuread book sho literally spout
her time watching the children Mrs
Gilder used to watch her curiously she
was as much absorbed in what they
said and did as if the solving of some
moral problem depended upon them
and so there did The lady could not
draw her into conversation as far as
they two were concerned thero was
unbroken silence they seemed in a fair
way never to become acquainted
ooraeiunes tn a sort 01 desperation she
went to her husband ibout it but got
nlways the same comment Yes wife
I know it is trying but thorn has some
thing gone wrong with her leave it to
time and it will right itself She looks
lonely Tm sorry for her
s we have said thero wero six chil
dren three girls and three boys They
were frank open hearted impetuous
They had their quarrels continually
but they always settled their own ditli
culties and they did so justly there
was no ty runny of boy over girl or girl
uei uujr inuir ngms wero eqnai me
cd to have suggested itself Whenever
auy of these durcrences occurred Miss
Shelley watched them with keen jeal
ous attentions She could not in anv
way find fault with those three boys
om day they would be three men-
otf
As tho twlgtshont so will tho tree
grow Iernaps sho had mrylo a rule
out of an exception Sho began tobe
in doubt nnd when wo nro in doubt
sometimes the smallest act will carry
great iunuonce just as when a balance
S almost effected tho addiil of a tiny
weight wlU perfect it This was tho
act this tho ivrilght
Sho had boon ombroldering a very
hamUomo sofa cushion and had left it
on tho library table ono of tho older
children had been using tho ink and
had loft it on the tablo also with the
stopper out of tho brittle Tho two
yoimger children a girl of six years
nnd a boy of four woro having agamu
of tajj there Sho was in her room and
hearing them camo down to watch
them but before sho reached tho room
their romp was ovor and there was
perfect silence At the door
sho discovered tho citiso tho
ink was upset all over her beau
tiful cusuion She went in qtilto as if
she had not noticed it nnd stood in one
of tho windows to watch the payors in
tho street bolow A few minutes
silenco inlervened then they came be
side hor even then she did not move
until tho little boy plucked tho skirt of
her iircss it was tho little girl who
spoke
Miss Shellev I am so sorry I
tumbled the dreadful ink all over your
splendid cushion
But see didnt dood it all her own
self causo I did part for chasm her
put in tlic lion- who did not speak qui to
plainly
Miss Shelley looked from one to tho
other such sudden tears came into her
eyes that she had to ilash them away
It is nothing at all I do not caroa
bt sho said and the bitterness and
sarcasm going out of her voice loft it
almost childlike in tone Sho stooped
nnd kissed each of them then went at
once to her room
Sco said sec didnt care a speck and
for all yat see cried said the boy in
a puzzled tone
It wasnt bout the cushion though
I wonder what for remarked tlic girl
curiously
See kiscs mos as sweet as mamma
Didnt spose see ever knew how said
tho bov
Mr Ilollistcr from his scat in one of
the draped windows heard and saw all
this with a smile on his grave face
That evening his sister told him all
about it alone in the parlor where she
had motioned him to follow he lixtcucd
to tho recital without 1 comment
She is so peculiar I wouldnt dare
offer to replace it when I apologized
she said excitedly I beg of vou do
not speak of it it only made me
glad
Mr nollistcr smiled
1 confess 1 cannot understand her
continued tho lad- then added Sho
made each of those children a present
this afternoon Robbie a very cxponsive
rockhig hocse and Bell the hand
somest doll I have ever seen
IN hen they returned to tho library
they found her surrounded by the six
She was scarcely recognizable her
checks were Hushed her eyes lustrous
her manner animated whilst her eager
listeners were sending forth pealsof
laughter Mr Gilder like the rest was
wholly interested and his newspaper
was sliding slowly and unheeded off his
lap At their entrance sho stopped in
rtulden confusion lleae go on
mamma and Uncle Nat will keep real
still urged one of the elder children
followed by a chorus from the others
but not until Robbie plucked her dress
as he had done in the afternoon did she
make the effort then sho wound up
with a spirit that called forth a burst
of applause and breaking away from
the little group took her roll of fancy
work to the tablo that held the drop
light picking up Mr Gilders
paper for him as she passed
Two weeks ago she would not have
extended a voluntary hand to wait upon
an- gentleman hence the little act was
a moral as well as a courteous one He
looked pleased at the attention Some
thing she could not tell what made her
glance at Mr Hollister she saw the
same grave kind face that was slowly
growing to bo a part of her lifo but
there was a now light in the eyes that
looked almost like a smile She felt
her chocks burn a3 she bent low over
her work
She entertained them all tliat evening
nnd when at ten oclock she bade them
good night Mrs Gilder turned to her
brother exclaiming Whatever lias
changed her so to night she has been
captivating
I knew it would come out sov I
knew she was made of the right metal
though we had never heard the ring
observed her husband Mr Ilollistcr
said nothing except good night
When he was gone Mr Gilder re
marked confidentially to her husband
Nat loves her one could see that if
one was blind I have wondered at it
until to night now 1 can understand
But does she or will she ever love him
It will iietoo hard if she diyisnt How
can she help it- such a splendid noble
fellow
In the days that followed thev saw
but little of hor She spent the mot of
her time iu her own room evidently she
was pissing through a striigcle this
spoke in her manner now unduly ener
getic now weary and languid it showed
111 Iny fice too which was thoughtful anil
troubled Several times Robbie enter
ing her 100m without knocking found
tears on her cheeks ho never told it
the loyal little fellow would not for the
world have betrajed his new friend
She could not at once give up the ex
perience ot a life time not at once re
nounce doubt for faith distrust for oon
IMeiioo But this quiet happy home
life where so many natures lived in
harmony for all their diffurenccsof dis
position ami temperament where each
ones rights were acknowledged and
respected worked out at length in its
natural way a great moral revolution
This was why Mr Hollister had brought
her here One day sitting alone in
her own room thisknowlodgo came to
her She no longer hated the whole
world sho had a sort of feeling of
friendship for it she even was conscious
of pitting her father and brother With
a sudden impulse she arose put on her
fur wraps and was just tying her bon
net strings when Robbie came into the
room and stood beside her
Where is 00 doiu Miss Shellev
For a moment it was hard to tell it
even to this child but she did so To
my fathers
He did not put another question
some children have fine intuitions and
he had ho even changed the subject
When this used to be Uncle Nats
rooms fore you coined he used to let
1110 and Bill rummage all fru his bu
reau be said
A sudden Hush swept up Miss Shel
leys face to her very temples Sho
hastily drew open one of the drawers
saying You can do so pow Robbie
whenever you want to and kissing
him good bvc left him in happy posses
sion Sho went down stairs slowly
drawing on her gloves on tho way She
did not like to admit how this bit of
innocently imparted news pleased her
she seemed uncomfortable to sec set up
against this kindness the words she
spoke to him that day before she left
her fathers home She had an indefi
nite determination of some day apolo
gizing The Hbrary was nt the foot of
the stairs as she was passing she
glanced in ho was there alone stand
ing beforo the grato lire his back to
the room
was possessed of a nhrposc disarren
able painful but she was possessed of
it She hesitated only a moment then
entered the room
Mr Hollister Ho turned instant
ly She went over nd stood at one
corner of the hearth ho at the othej
Then followed a short silence sho tai
ping tho fonder with hor foot as f
impatient of herself At length sits
said with an effort I believe it h
considered that to a noblo nature whm
once convinced of error an apology h
easy I am not noblo honco I find t
very hard
Why mako it then ho saU
coldly
Sho flashed up at that in her excite
undisciplined way Why because I
do not Intend nt every turn to bo mt
by a duty unperformed do not propoio
becoming tho slavo of a neglected act
Sho had never seen his line grave face
so cold and forbidding
And 1 Miss Shelley do not pro
pose being tho recipient of an apology
mado simply for tho sake of duty
A senso of all his kindness stiddenfy
rushed in upon her arid moro thai
this tho consciousness f this now Jnili
which he had been tho means of forir
ing her face her manner changed bur
ayes tilled with tears hor lips quivered
Mr Hollister I have been mistakci
in my own impulse hence it is nature
I should have misled you nnd mako yot
for the moment despiso me It is net
becauso it is merely a duty but becui
it is just and right I want to talc
back alt that I said that day I was
narrow and contracted I looked ott
at tho world through tho small loop
hole of my own experience and reduce
all that catnc within tho range of re
vision to tho sizo of that through whim
I viewed them You have given mo a
broader happier life I am very gratt
ful to you
Shodid not look nl him as she spoke
and when sho finished was hastity
leaving tho room when ho called bur
back Ho came to meet Iter his hand
wero extended and his face had a nev
light
Miss Shelley I love you
Her hands trembled excessively but
sho placed them in his Ho quietly
drew off ono of her fur gauntlets
Have I a right ho asked with 1
quizzical smile and then kissed he
hand
A few minutos after Bell standing ii
tho sitting room window said
There go Miss Shelley and Unci
Nat down tho street both of em to
gether mamma
Mrs Gclder got up so quickly thai
she dropped her scissors and thread
She joined the little girl at the window
and watched them out of sight with 1

satisfaction nt her own penetration

tho root tlio plant is propagaicu uv
root is remarkably white within rather
mucilaginous and when cooked is much
esteemed by many but lacking the dry
starchy character of the potato not
likely to be generally popular It is
lioilcd roasted or fried Tho great
obstacle to its general cultivation is the
difficulty of taking tho crop tho depths
to which tho roots go perpendicularly
downward making the digging of them
very expensive Their shape being
largest below renders it impossible to
pull them and their extreme brittlencss
makes it exceedingly difficult to extract
them without breaking The plant is
perfectly hardy and tho root remain in
the ground during tho severest winters
without injury Its cultivation is naw
confined to amateurs who arc willing to
bo at the trouble of digging tho roots
and it is sometimes grown as an orna
mental vine

jour uncle and his whole family are the
toughest collection of old fossils I have
