Tlio rc ctipes here given arc collected from iliirereiit eourcs : Take in bout b toivpoonftil of Cim'ime prp)or, mix it thoroughly willi i quart of oil, nnd rub tlio harness with the mixture. Thie, it is ehiiinod, will ' not only keep ruts from gnawing tho bar- litw, but it will also prevent horses nml colts from elicwing their linca or halters. Take two quoi ts of green leek?, pour over them one gallon of oil, and let it tain a few days before using.; the longer it stands tho better. A little beu.inc rubbed over the harness ftfter it has been oiled is said to be a sure preventive, but is it not recommended by many, on account of the idea that it injures the leather. One ounce of aloes to one gallon of oil will prevent raU from distroying the harness. It is also claimed that by mixing a small quantity, say a table spoonful of pine tar to one quart of oil, harness will be most effectully 'protected from any injury : bat if to much is put on the leather Will not absorb it. It will collect dirt, besides making tho har ness unpleasant to handle. Harness and Carriage Journal. LAND OCCUPIED BY FENCES. The materials and labor required to build and keep fences in repair are among the heavy items of farm ex pense. The cost of the land on which they stand is another item, on which J. Harris, of Rochester, discourses as follows in the American Agriculturist : How much land ' dues an old fash ion fence occupy? I have always thought it took up a good deal of land, but never had tho curiosity to measure But this snnimcr we have been build ing a stone wall along tho whole west Eidc of the farm, and, after it was com pleted, and the old fence removed, I was surprised at the quantity of land we had gained. The ground, of course, might have been ploughed closer to tho fence ; but, taking the case as its actually was, the old rail-fem e with stones, weed.-', rubbish, Ac, occu. wied a strip of one rod wide. A field thirty-one rods long and thirty-one rods wide containing about six acres. If surrounded by such a fence, it would occupy a little over three-quarters of an acre of land. A farm of ouo hundred and sixty acres so fenced would have twenty acres of land taken up in this worse than useless manner. Not only is the use of the laud lost, but it is, in the majority of cases, a nursery of weeds and, in plowing much time is lost in turning, nnd the headlands and corners areseldom properly cultivated. A MA UK ET VOIX POTATOES. The crop ef potatoes this year prom ises to be a large one. To the question. What shall we do with them ? "Itural," of thr Chicago Tribune answers : What you cannot sell, feed to your cows, horses and pigs. In the New England States and New York, iu the old time, the potato crop had had no commercial value, but was of great im portance for feeding purposes. Better give our work teams in Rpring a feed . of potatoes at noon, rather than corn, espoeially if we feed com at night and morning. Ifyouhavea dry cow lo fat, feed her potatoes. If short of corn for the pigs, boil potatoes for them. A p tck a day to each cow will add to your yield of butler. The surplus for market is more apparent than real, after deducting fur home use. Thous ands of farmer's families at tho West will have a winter supply for the first time, thanks to the potato mania. The Colorado potato-hug, that was to sweep away this crop and cut it off from the list of good plants, has disappeared from amouy us (in Central Illinois,) and tho potato bids fair to be more valuable than before. tue aoi" ciior. The Green Hay (Wisconsin. ) Advo cate says : "We gather from our exchanges that the hop crop in this Statu will bo better than last year. In some places it is damaged by lice, but the destruc tion is confined to limited localities. In some places the picking has com- nienccd. but generally the crop will not be ready for picking until the lat ter part of this week. At Bamboo and cl-;ewhero growers are uncertain whether the prices will justify tlio ex panse of picking and bailing, und un less some nspuiani o is jriven of remun erative prices, the crob of many yards will be allowed to perish on the vines, . At Kilbuurn City U ceiit-i per pound 1 have been ollerod for prime new hops." ADVERTISE ! f EDUCATION. 1 MONTICELlTLilNAUY, GODFREY, ILLS.
