Germans Are Pushed Back at All Points After 201 Days of Battle. TURKS HELP TEUTONS Stop Russian Advance for Second Time Since Lem berg Advance Started. Uy United Pre. WITH THE FRENCH ARMY AT VERDUN, Sept 9. The Germans are now entirely on the defensive at Ver dun. The great battle begun 201 days ago has now- entered Its third and final stage. The French are steadily win ning back their lost positions.-'- "The battle gradually will tile out, like an extinct volcano. 'It has been learned definitely to night that the Germans were forced to remove huge quantities of artillery and men from Verdun to the Somme front recently, to meet the new Anglo French offensive. This had an immed iate effect upon the morale of the re maining men. In Februar ythey had been told they were to capture Verdun. At the end of June they "were told it would be sufficient simply to dominate the sit uation there. But when they had been reduced in numbers to merely a de fensive garrison, after nearly seven months of fighting, their morale was so shattered that groups of prisoners have ibeen surrendering daily. The seventh and last great German massed attack was made on both banks of the Meure on July 10. The French, chocked this blow immediately and took the offensive- Ever since that time they have re tained the initiative, capturing In their operations more than 10,000 prisoners, scores of cannon and hundreds of ma chine guns.
