the investment of Verdun. In this instance, also to learn the truth it is suf
ficient to refer to the situation as set forth on several different occasions, in
the French official communications.
"The Germans have not succeeded up to the present time in hurling them
selves against the fortified position of Verdun. They have, however, made
two futile efforts to-envelop, at a considerable distance, the French forces
which are operating around Verdun. One of those efforts was characterized
by their attempt to go through the Argonne forest between Binarville and
Varennes. It will be recalled that this movement failed, with very import
ant losses. We did not even announce at the tme that two German bat
talions (1000 men) had been annihilated in this engagement.

Young Men Ready For Excursion
Meet Mishap on Cape's
The "Alvin Victor, an elegant gaso
line launch belonging to Alvin Haas,
came near being destroyed Sunday
afternoon when'She was carried by the
apid current into the ferry boat at
the foot of Broadway.
When the accident occurred the
launch had cn board a party of young
men who were preparing to enjoy an
afternoon's excursion on the river.
The boat was released from her
anchorage at a point opposite the de
pot, and when she had gone but a
short distance her engine failed com
pletely and she drifted helplessly
down the stream for about 100 feet
when she rammed the ferry boat.
The rear end of the launch was bad
ly wrecked, and the gasoline can was
torn completely off and lost in the
river and had it not been for the as
sistance rendered by the crew of the
ferry boat, the launch would have been
completely lost and those on board
subjected to danger of drowning.
After about an hour's labor the dis
abled craft was brought to shore, and
later placed on the docks for repair.
Those abroad at the time of the dis
aster were: Alvin Haas, Joe Sandman,
Edward Bauerle, Walter ami Edward
Vanduse, Henry Holder and Albert
Louis Bey, another young man who
had accompanied the party to the
river bank, at the last minute was
seized with a premonition that some
thing bad was going to happen, and
refused to accompany his friends on
their trip. Later developments proved
the correctness of his judgment, and
while his companions were struggling
to save themselves, he stood on the
bank and shouted words of encourage
ment and advice.
While the launch was badly injured
she was not a total loss, and will be
placed in good repair within the next

The season has been unfavorable and
there was some talk of not holding the
show this year. When a meeting was
called, howere, and some inquiries
made in regard to the possibilities of
raising funds, it was found that prac
tically every man who subscribed last
year was willing to do so again this
time ami that the concensus of opinion
among the farmers and business men
of the community was that the cxhib't
was needed ami was well worth while.
This is the proper spirit and the right
view to take for events of this charac
ter do much to stimulate and create
interest in both live stock and grain
Last year it rained during the show,
but there was a good sized crowd on
h:nd, muhwithstanding this year bet
ter weather and a larger crowd is ex
Appleton's corn and live stock show
will be held next Friday and Saturday,
October 16-17. The secretary of the
association reports that there will be
as large a number of entries in all
classes as usual. Prof. Logan of the
Cape Girardeau Normal school will
judge the live stock classes.
Next week, October 20-21-22, the
Southeast Missouri Federation of
Commercial clubs will hold their an
nual exhibit of Southeast Mo. prod
ucts. Exhibits will be made by coun
ties. A number of firms and individ
uals have contributed products for the
Cape Girardeau County exhibit and
others are solicited to do likewise.
Articles for the exhibit should be left
either at the office of the Cape Gir
ardeau Commercial club at Cape Gir
ardeau not later than Saturday after
noon, October 17, or at the Farm Ad
viser's office in Jackson not later than
Several cases of sickness among
cattle have been reported to this office
lately. The animals are all affected
very much alike and all cases report
ed have either recovered or are getting
better. The animals get stiff and sore
in the front feet and sometimes hesi
tate about chewing their food, par
ticularly dry hay; saliva drips from
the mouths and the flow of milk is re
duced. The technical name of the
trouble is Maycotic Stomatitis. It is
caused by fungi which the animals
have eaten on forage. Parsley, green
corn, or any luxuriant vegetation may
be affected. An examination in most
cases of the mouth of the effected ani
mal, will reveal a number of small
sores or ulcers on the mucuous membrane.

help as if they were all killed in one
