MORE GOOD WORDS.
The Hayti Herald has passed from
babyhood to a good size boy. It Is
now a yoar old. It has succeeded ad
mirablyas it ought to for it is a
splendid paper. Portagovillo Critic.
The Hayti Herald with its last week's
issue completed . its first year. Will
York, the editor and proprietor, Is
giving to the people of Hayti one of the
best papers in Southeast Missouri,
and Hayti should give the Herald the
support it merits. Steele News.
Now, people of Hayti, what are you
going to do?. From time to time we
have shown you what the newspapers
of Southeast Missouri think of the
Herald, and that the Herald lias not
only been a credit, but an honor to
the City of Hayti, unc to make it so,
wo have worked night und duy and
even deprived self und family of many
necessities of life our wife, instead of
being at homo with her babies, has
worked weeks and months in the ollico.
We have strained every nerve and
used every effort to make the paper
what it has been, and now, having fin
ished our first year and started on the
second, it seems that the majority o
our subscribers are slow to renew their
subscription, and are putting us oil'
entirely too long, especially at a time
when we need the money.
No one should become ollended be
we ask them to renew their subscrip
tion, but should gladly pay it. $1.00
is a small matter to each individual,
but many of them amount to considera
ble to us, and we need them. It costs
money to run a newspaper, and we
must depend upon our earnings for
the money.
Wo have tried to run the paper on a
cash basis, because we think it is best,
and we still think so. We appreciate
the patronage of every one, and hope
every old subscriber will come in
promptly and renew.
cians show some consideration for
Hayti people and for Hayti institutions.
Congressman Crow of this district
wa8 given the honor of introducing
President Taft at Cape Girardeau.
Portagevillo Critic.
Now, Col. Walker outght to be old
enough to keep out of those republi
can publicity traps. Of course it was
all right for Mr. Crow to have some
part in the program, and to be en
titled to some prestige, but tho people
have a right to know that it was Gov.
Hadlej who had the honor of intro
ducing Pros. Taft at the Cape.
Caruthersville will furnish a candi
date for circuit judge, so we are re
liably informed Portageville Critic.
Trot him out and let's take
at him.

FACT AND FANCY.
The Maiden Merit says:
"If Kennett should vote 'wet' Mai
den will invite those who oppose the
sule of intoxicants at that place to
come and reside where law, order and
morals are far in the majority."
It won't work, brother: it won't
work. Hayti has learned this from
experience. We were led to believe in
the late local option election that if
Pemiscot county went dry and Ca
ruthersville wet, that the better ele
ment of local optionists would come
to Hayti. It was preached to us that
Hayti would grow and prosper, while
poor old Caruthersville would dwindle
away und die of her own "poison."
But it was not so. Tho merchants
of Hayti began to tumble over one
another in business failures, assign
ments and bankruptcy; our large fac
tory shut down and operated the Ca
ruthersville branch; our city went
down; many of our people, mostly lo
cal optionists, moved away. But Ca
ruthersville blossomed like a rose and
boomed as it had never boomed be
fore; more local optionists moved to
Caruthersville and local optionists
from every part of the county go there
to trade. Tho local optionists of Ca
ruthersville prepared to do more busi
iness, increased their stocks in every
line, built better, larger und ilner
houses and better streets and walks.
All kinds of factories have located at
Caruthersville, and she is in the height
of her glory, while poor old Huyti,
Pascola and Steele bus had a struggle
for existo nee.
This is not an argument for nor
against local option, but simply to
show that the sentimental and theorot-
itcal, and the business end of it are as
far apart as tho poles, and that tho
business end, in Pemiscot county, has
proven much the strongest, as a visit
to Caruthersville will pi-ovo to any one
who is capable of reason.
Jackson Cash-Book: You may talk
about political issues, but there is one
question rapidly forging to the front
that bids fair to soon overshadow all
others. It is whether the states are
going to be allowed their contitutional
right of self-government, or whether
the federal courts are going to take
tho right away from them. As things
are going now, of what use is a state
legislature when the laws it enacts die
on the statute book by the dictum of a
federal court judge appointed to ollice
for life?"

Wo notice some of the Caruthers

well, boys; if Huyti and Hayti insti

unmuzzled, untrummeled, and our

Clarksville Herald: The Johnson
County Bank now believes in patron-;
izeing home institutions more than J
formerly. This consern, like many j
other big business institutions, has
been using printed envelopes furnish
ed by the government, but tins week
that bank placed with us a large
order for envelopes. This shows the t
right spirit. The envelopes may cost
the bank a little more than Uncle Sam
would charge for them but the work
rightly belongs to home printing of
fices, as tne home oHices live from
patronage of honle people principally,
and the money of the home printers is
spent with home merchants and
through homo banks, so money thus
spent will come buck. Others should
follow the example of the Johnson
County Bank.

"I would lay awake for hours
without any apparent cause, or
dream terrible dreams which
would bring on extreme spells
of nervousness. After taking
Dr. Miles' Nervine and Tonic
for awhile I could sleep well,
and the nervous spells have left
me." MISS ALMA HUG,
R. R, No. 4, Canal Dover, Ohio.
Without sleep the nervous
system soon becomes a wreck,
and the healthful activity of all
the organs obstructed. Restful,
body-building sleep accompanies
the use of Dr. Miles' Nervine
because it soothes the irritable
nerves, and restores nervous
energy. When taken a few days
according to directions, the most
restless sufferer will find sleep
natural and healthful. Get a
bottle from your druggist. Take
it all according to directions, and
if it does not benefit he will re
turn your money.
