DIDN'T MIX WITH TROUBLE.
The stranarer Within the -ates Ob
served a trii-t Neutrality.
In uiiswerto my 'Hello!the house!"
tha niountainear's wife came to the
door and uttered a 'Howdy?' and as
I asked for lodsrin for the nijht, she
looked me over and finally said:
Stranger, ar' yo much of a hand
to mix in?"
"How do you mean?'
"Wall, kin yo" sot bv and ii'ar two
jieople ja.viu' without takin" sides?"
"Yes, i think so.''
"Won't take up fur neither side?"
"Xo."
"Jest mind yo'r own lii.ncss arid
let 'em font it out?"
"Yes."
"Wall, then, yo' kin yit down and
stop fur the niylit. l'nt yer hosr in
that shed and the old man will take
keer of him when he cuius home."
"I ean't exaetly make out what you
meant when you spoke aliout quarrel
injr, I said, after entel inj; the house
and seeinjr that she was alone.
"I kin explain in about a minit,"
she promptly replied. "We hev two
sort ofrelijjun around here Methodist
and Baptist."
"The oleman'sa Methodist, but I'm
a Baptist from top to bottom. Sha'n't
be nuthin' but a Baptist if I live a
thousand y'ars. "
"1 see.v
"Kei'kou by the looks of yo' that
yo' ar a I'lvsliyterutn. After super
the o!e man he'll tx-'rin to praise the
Methodists and run down the Baptists.
That'll lire me up and I'll liejrin to
praise the Baptists and run down the
Methodists. We'll jest make things
hum after we -fit to roin"."
"And I don't come in?"
"Not if you've any sense in yo'r
head! If yo" should jro fur to back up
one of us t'other would pitch into yo."
and if yo 'should jfo fur to declare that
th" I'resbyterian relitfun lieat all other

"I do. ma'am, and my policy will
be to stand neutral."
"That's it -sorter between i:r. and
sayin' nothin' not if yo want to stop

We had scarcely yotour pipes light

threw out a hot shot and was se dily
answered back, and for half an hour
things were more titan lively, i stuck
to the neutral policy .x though it was
the hardest kind of work, and when
the eople had finally cooled down the

THE MISSOURIANS.
l.ooklnz Forward to the Contest at
Springfield.
Many of the; Missouri delegation
left for their homes yesterday. The
Filley headquarters at the Planters'
Hotel were deserted, and were return
ed to their former use as parlor rooms.
The other headquarters at the South
ern were still ojien. and a few visitors
dropjied in during the morning hours.
Anions thi.'pi were B. B. fahoon. of
Madison county, candidate for the
nomination for Governor.
The talk among the late opponents
of Mr. Filley is that of Mr. ( alioon
will receive the support of Mr. Kernes
and his friends for the nomination at
tile Sprinjrticld convention. Cnhooii
and Kernes held a conference yester
day at the latter ottice. but whether
it partook of unusual political sig
nificance is not known. Some of
those who worked the hardest for Mr.
Kernes' election as National Commit
teeman express the opinion that Mr.
Cahoou would make a strong candi
date. Tile indications now are that there
will be not less than a half dozen
names lief ore the nominating- 'inven
tion. including('ahoon..lohn B. Hale.
A. C- I'ettijohn. Mayor Walbridge
