The Weekly Democrat. Published Every Saturday by TH6 Democrat Prlntina 60. 114 THEMIS STREET. Sneered at the Post Offle at Cape Girardeau, Mo., a eeond-elaaa matter. SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1900. ANNOUNCEMENT. We are authorized to announce Henry a. Astholz As a candidate for the office of City Treasurer at the ensuing city election. The constitution and the stars and stripes go together on land and sea. There are twelve Democratic candi dates for Sheriff in Stoddard county. Tbe war in Kentucky still goes on, and Uncle Sam may yet have to take a hand. Tbe Democrats are building jails in Kentucky to imprison voters who dare to vote the Republican ticket. From all indications it now seems that Vandiver will receive the nomi nation from his party by acclimation. Ed. Caruthers of the Dunklin Demo crat is to be punished with an opposi tion Democratic paper for his wicked ness iu opposing Vandiver. Seems to us that it is about time for the Republican County Central Com mittee of this county to be looking after the interests of the party in the county. An early convention would be the proper thing this year. They have three newspapers down in Pemiscot county. In 1871 the pub lisher of this paper landed at Gaynse with a Washington hand press and a few foots of type and started the first newspaper ever established in that county. At that time Pemiscot, county was a wilderness compared to the Pemiscot county of to-day. We met an Indiana Democrat today who says Abe Lincoln was the mean est man this country ever produced. Of course no sane man would, at this late date, use such language about tbe greatest statesman this country ever produced. The man was from Indiana and a Democrat and that settles it. Senator Morgan, of Alabama, writes of the interests of other nations in tbe Nicaragua Canal: '"When, for reasons of policy, or the strategy of war, we reserve the ritrht to make the canal an instrument of gain, at their loss, or of military advantage over them, we need not expect the good rill or the toleration of any maritime nation; and no nation was ever strong .enough to defy the good opinion of mankind." It might be added that the United States wants no such ex clusiveness applied to ship canals in other continents. Globe-Democrat. Sheldon has charge of it, but as a denominational Christian daily it could not last. The Daily Democrat has always been conducted as a religious paper, but it adhered to the dogmas of no par ticular church. Its editor worships at no particular altar, has no prefer ence as to creeds, but tries to follow the example of Christ that of doing srood: and he has succeeded in keep ing a daily going for nearly eleven Our motto has always been less religion and more food and cloth in? for the masses. Rev. Sheldon l PontrrBcrationalist. The editor of the Democrat is a Christian creed attachment. with no a -ociflpnt of Bird's Point in the iua citv to-day says there is general dis ruption over there in the choir of the Methodist church as a result of too nilaritv at choir meeting last Uiuvu --- - -J Thursday night. Choir practice was v.u tat. cfninr at the residence of 1LC1U ... ' o , resident of Enworth League. Afterwards the members indulged a cake-walk and rag-time music, much to the annoyance of the hostess, who. on Sunday night, after the sermon pot up and announced that the choir practices in future would be held at the church instead of at the homes of members. It is said that a number of the sisters threaten to withdraw from the membership andlstart a church of their own. Cairo Telegram. All the fraternal beneficiary soci eties are now operating under the supervision of the various state in surance departments, which is & guar antee of their reliability, and, as all seem to be equally meritorious, they are fit subjects for unqualified com mendation. To use an ancient phrase, they merit the endorsement of "press and pulpit" for the good they are do ing, and for tbe valuable lessons of sobriety and thrift and duty to fol low man thoy are teaching. 'Young man, don't swear," re marks a Kansas exchange. "There is no occasion for it outside the print ing office, where it is useful when the paper is behind time. It also comes in handy in proof-reading, and is in dispensible when the ink werks bad and the press begins to buck. It is often brought into use when the fore man's mad, ana it is known to en tirely remove that tired feeling' of the editor when he looks over the paper after it is printed-. Outside the printing office it is a foolish habit." Hlorjr of a Hlave. To be bound hand and footfor years by the chains of disease is the worst form of slavery. Geo. D. Williams of Manchester, Mich., tells how such a slave was made free. He says: My wife has been so helplass for five years that she conld not turn over in bed alone. After using two bottles of Electric Bitters, she is wonderfully improved and able to do her own work. This supreme remedy for fe male diseases quickly cures nervous ness, sleeplessness, melancholy, head ache, backache, fainting and dizzy spells. This miracle working medi cine is a godsend to weak, sickly, run down people. Every bottle guaran teed. Only 50 cents. Sold by I. Ben Miller, druggist. 5 Another Gasoline Lamp Exploded. Last night about 8 o'clock the gas oline lamp in Power's printing machine works on Main street ex ploded and caused for a time general excitement in that neighborhood. By the heroic action of some one the gas lamp was thrown out of the building on the street and left to the mercy of the world. Not more than two weeks ago one of tbe gas lamps in Chas. Allen's barber shop exploded, and for a time it looked as if the building was in danger of being consumed by the flames. There also a heroic act was performed by Mr. Kraft, who without much deliberation concluded that such a lamp had no business in a building and the safest place for it was on the street. That time Pate Oliver, a barber, was badly bnrned about the neck and hands, and from the latest report current he was burn ed so badly that he will be a cripple for life.
