Mr. C. S. Morrison, Merchant and
post-master at Delta, has announced
himself as a candidate for County
Treasurer. Mr. Morrison is a first-
class business man and a gentleman
who stands high with those who know
him. See his announcement in this
paper.
Next week should be a grand holi
day week. The new fair grounds will
be opened next Tuesday when the big
fair wili begin. Citizens of Cape Gir
ardeau should make next weeK a grand
bolidav week and everybody should
take a pride in showing up on the fair
grounds.
JudgeJohnG. Wear spoke to a
large audience at the court house in
Jackson Saturday night. Judge Wear
is another prominent Democrat who
has quit the Bryan party. His speech
was an able effort from an able man.
Next week will be fair week and
every citizen in Cape Girardeau
should prepare something to help
make the fair attractive.
Postage stamps that are damaged
by sticking together in warm weather
may be returned to the department
and their value paid to purchaser or
exchanged for new stamps, or if you
spoil a stamped envelope in attempt
ing to write the address on it, do not
threw it away, for you can return it
to the post-office and receive the stamp
value. All the redeemed envelopes
and stamps are sent to the post-office
department by the post-mastar redeem
ing them, and records kept. Those
regulations are not generally known
and they may be of some value to a
large number of people.
There will be room in the floral hall
at the fair for the exhibits of every
body. Let our people be there with
something to show.
Get your advertising matter ready
and hand it in if you want the Demo
crat to tell the people what you have
to sell.
The City Council met Monday night
and transacted the regular monthly
business.
P. J. Murphy has been awarded the
contract to do a lot of street grading
at Jackson. Mr. Murphy is an ex
perienced man in grading work and
has had big contracts in all parts of
the country. He did that splendid
piece of grading for tne a. ftl. & A.
railroad along our river front. The
city of Jackson will get a good job of
grading.
Mr. Harrison of the Himmelberger
Land and Lumber Co., of Morehouse,
is in the city looking for a house to
move his family into.
The people who left this city Mon
day to spend a few days in St. Louis
will spend also two or three thousand
dollars that will never return to this
city.
The merchant who fails to advertise
his business before the opening of the
big fair will wonder how it is that his
competitor, who does advertise, does
all the business.
Privilege men on tne fair grounds
will reap a harvest this year. The
people will be there and they will
have the money.
Hon. Norman A. Mozley, Republi
can candidate for Congress will make
a canvass of this county the week af
ter the fair, beginning October 17, and
closing on the 20ih. Mr. Mozley is
an interesting speaker and his canvass
of the county will make votes for the
Republican county ticket.
The Opera House management have
this year reserved every seat in the
house and in buying the cheaper
tickets you will have your seat re
served the same as those buying
a higher priceO ticket. Next week
they will place tickets on sale for the
whole week so that you can get your
seat reserved three or four days in
advance. Prices for the week 50c and
35c. Tickets for sale at Miss Amy
Kimmel's.
Dr. Rolston is keeping bach His
wife is visiting relatives in St. Louis.
A gentleman has been in this city
two or three days looking for a
dwelling house in which to locate his
family, ao far he has been unable
to find a desirable house. He is
willing to pay from thirty to thirty-
nve dollars per montb rent for a
house that will suit him.
Let us make fair week a grand- holi
day week. The fair next week will be
the beginning of a new era in our
fair and we should see that the fair is
a grand success.
The river is rising and their is now
a good stage of water for steamboat-
ing-
There will be more people at the
fair next week than ever attended a
former fair here.
There was a meeting of the Mc-
Kinley-Roosevelt Club at the court
house last night.
William Krueger has rented the
room next door to the post-office and
will move hi business from the
Masonic Hall building.
Sam Davis, formerly an old Cape
boy, is in the city accompanied by his
wife on a short visit. Mr. Davis is
in the railroad business at Butte,
Montana.
Scott county people who attend the
fair next week will not have to pay
toll on Thursday, Friday and Satur
day. The toll gates will be wide open
during those three days-.
Hon. J. L. Minnis of Carrolon. Mis
souri, who was a delegate at large to
the National- Republican Convention
will speak at the court house in this
city Wednesday, October 31t at 1:30
p. m.

The grounds for the big fair are
now in good order and evervthing is
in readiness lor a grand big fair week
Fourteen passenger trains now pass
up and down the river front daily.
This gives the city a business like ap
pearance.
This is ideal weather and we trust it
will remain so during cext week. If
it does the attendance at our fair will
be a large one.
The railroads that run to this city
seem to be doing an unusually large
business in the way of passenger traf
fic. Every passenger train that pulls
in here has a coach full of passengers.
Visitors to the fair are invited to
visit the Democrat office and see the
presses running by power something
they cannot see in any other place in
Southeast Missouri.
We see by the railroad news in the
St. Louis papers that the Iron Moun
tain railroad is going to put on night
trains between St. Louis and Belmont,
making connection with the Cotton
Belt at Delta.
I. Ben Miller will make a display at
the fair this year that will be unique
and will attract considerable atten
tion. Mr. Miller is one of our enter
prising men who is ever ready to help
our city and interests.

didates till after the fair. When a
candidate approaches you ask him if
be is going to attend tne fair, and it
be answers you no, tell him you have
