SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS ARRIVE TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1914. Capt. and Mrs. Nelson of Portland, Oregon, arrived yesterday to take charge of Army work here. They are officers of eight years experience good singers and interesting speakers. Their initial meeting takes place to night, (Tuesday) at the Army Hall at 8 o'clock. A cordial invitation is ex tended to all. I Yan DUR attention is re spectfully called to important point not generally known, that a laxative should have a tonic element to success* fully meet constipation. Mr. John B. Capers, of 610 Pecan St., Fort Worth, Texas, had a sig nificant experience in this particular. He was afflicted with a Severe case of constipation and bowel trouble. He spent a good deal of money in trying to And a remedy. To his astonish ment Peruna very quickly relieved him of his bad This happened a number of years ago. Since then, Mr. Capers states that be has had similar attacks of trouble, the promi nent symptom of which is constipa tion, and has al a prompt and effi cient relief from Peruna. He says: "Up to the time I started using your Peruna I could drink castor oih like water. It did' xio good. As for salts, they were of no use. Physics of all kinds and classes were used, but we had to call on the fountain syringe for help." Peruna was able to cor rect this condition completely In Mr. Capers' case, and there Is every rea son to believe that it was the tonic qualities of Peruna, added to the laxa tive qualities, that procured this very desirable result. The Germans hav« evacuated their trench es, leaving in some of them many sol diers who died from a severe visita tion of typhoid. They left two of their heaviest guns in the quarries, heavily cemented in place. "Two salient events marked the part of the fighting of which Soissons was the center. First, the capture by the allies of Fort Conde after a siege of 1 day and, second, the remarkable slaughter by the British In the last of a series of German attacks. "It is agreed that wherever the Germans have dealt severe havoc to the allies around this position their success was due wholly to a spy sys tem. The allies soon found out that the Germans were able to diagnose their movements readily and institu ted a systematic search for offenders, They captured seven spies, one ^f them a woman who used electric flash lights signals from a window. "It is not altogether true to say that the battle of the Aisne is over even now, but in the past few days con siderable areas have been deserted by the Germans and great wedges of the allies' forces thrown forward." ROBBERY IN VALLEY CITY FRIDAY NIGHT The Seymour Granger and John A. Alderman and Lydia Pray, homes were the scenes of a robbery last night and early this morning. Two men entered the Granger home on Fifth avenue and after inspecting the rooms down stairs they went to the upper ones and took about ten dollars and several articles of jewelry which they found there. The occupants of the house were awakened by the noise that they made but when they got up to investigate the robbers had fled. After leaving there they broke into the home of John Alderman on Fifth avenue and were not heard until they had taken several articles upstairs and were just getting away. After leaving here they also visited the home of Mrs. Lydia Pray on Fifth avenue and the Thoreson hotel. At both of these places they received some loot. No trace of the men can be found. London, Oct. 12.—Antwerp and the forts surrounding the city, are in com plete possession of the Germans, but the greater part of the Belgian army escaped. It took the Germans just 11 days to capture the strongest fortress in the world. Antwerp's fall is evidence that even the most powerful forts are no match for the colossal Howitzers which the invaders have successfully employed against every fortified place in their way. The Germans, after their shells had made the town untenable, entered through the suburbs of Berchem, to the east. They had made a breach in the outer line of forts, some of which had been destroyed by their big guns and others blown up by the defenders. At 2:30 Friday afternoon, the cathed ral war banner was replaced by a white flag, indicating surrender. A few forts continued to hold out, and not until 11 o'clock this morning were Germans, according to their own official report, in complete possession of the fortress. At least part of the garrison, the king, and the royal fam ily, had escaped before the Germans entrance. The death roll from the attack, and defense of Antwerp have not been com piled, but accounts say they are terri YOUR CHECK NOT ONLY Pays The Account, But Serves THe Purpose Of A RECEIPT AS WELL! The Belgians, besides destroying the forts, blew up the steamers at the docks, and Bet fire to petrol stores and everything useful to the invaders. Berchem is reported entirely destroyed The question now is what effect the capture of Antwerp will have on tse general campaign of the Germans. The Germans propose, according to Berlin reports to use the city a9 a base for operations against England. As long as Great Britain commands the sea. no great part of the German navy can use the port, even should Germany overrule Holland's objection to the use of Scheldt by beligerent ships, and build destroyers, and submarines there to menace the British fleet. In France, according to French com munication, the allies have maintained their positions, depite violent attacks at several points. The Germans and Russian forces on the East Prussian frontier are still fighting stubbornly. The Russians ap* parently continue to make progress slowly. The Germans evidently fear ing another invasion of East Prussia, are sending reinforcements by rail way and sea.
