CHEAT BATTLE RAGING NEAR WARSAW- GERMAN ADVANCE MEETS STRONG OPPOSITION Warsaw, Dec. 17.—A great battle is 3n progress at Sochaczew, thirty miles west of Warsaw. A German wedge, proceeding southeasterly from Ilow, raianaged, after heavy fighting and {great losses, to establish itself a quar ter of a mile of Sochaczew. The German column was met at Sochaczew by fierce resistance on the part of the Russians. The fighting -was extremely severe, at many points leading to hand-to-hand encounters. The artillery fire on both sides was heavy and continuous. German aero planes are constantly circling over the town. Reinforcements are being pour ed in rapidly on both sides. A statement issued last night at the embassy said: "According to information received by the German embassy from Chile, the battle off the Falklan islands last ed from 9 o'clock in the morning un til 7 o'clock in the evening. "On the British side the Invincible, Inflexible, Canopus, Oarnarver, Corn wall, Kent, Glasgow and Bristol were engaged. Many Geman officers and men were saved, but lack of boats pre vented the number from being larger. The British cruiser Defense did not take part and has been seen aground at Port Stanley. "Only seven English cruisers left the scene of battle, so that one must have been sunk. The others were bedly damaged." WANTS NORTH DAKOTA CORN AT OHIO SCHOOL Minot, N. D., Dec. 18.—Earl Grow, a student at the Ohio state university, and a nephew of C. A. Grow of this city, wants several specimens of North Dakota corn to be used at a big corn exhibition to be held at the university next February. There will be exhibits of various grades of corn grown in many of the states, but Earl believes that an exhibit from here will be a distinct feature, as many people are yet unfamiliar with the corn growing qualifications of this state. There will be visitors to the show from all sections and a good exhibit from this state should mean consider able favorable advertising for North Dakota. El Paso, Tex., Dec. 17.—The first im portant battle between the Carranza and Villa factions of the constitution alist army is progressing near San Pedro de las Colon, in East Torreon. Several columns of Carranza troops from Coahuila state, aggregate 5,000, are engaged by a Villa force of slight ly superior numbers.
