Maier, of Eckelson, who is well known in the city, was in town on Thursday. Miss Hilda Winsted was a visitor in Fargo to attend the Hollett-McCartney wedding on Thursday. Hon. K. S. Ramsett and family, of Fingal, were among the Valley City visitors on Wednesday. Messrs. Granger and Smeltzer have gone to points west of Carrington on matters of land business. Among those who registered at the Valley Hotel on Wednesday was Mrs. George Gordon, of Eckelson. Robert Rathje, of Tower City, spent Friday in the city and registered at the Valley Hotel while here. The Heidel hardware have just in stalled a fine new National cash regis ter at their store on Fifth avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carr were among those who were in Fargo on Wednes day to attend the Ringling Bros, cir cus. J. Miss Marion Towne was a visitor on Thursday in Fargo, where she at tended the Hollett-McCartney wed ding. Walter J. King, of Tower City, was in the city on Wednesday and was registered at the Hotel Kindred while here. Miss Charlotte Peake expects to go down to Park Rapids, Minn., the end of the week for a visit at the Dr. E. A. Pray cottage. Miss Hilda Falstad was an arrival in the city on Wednesday evening from Hatton, for a two weeks' visit with relatives. Bismarck Tribune: Miss Tess Henry, of the city, has gone to Valley City, where she will spend the week at her home there. Bismarck Tribune: N. C. Macdon ald, nominee for state superintendent of public instruction, was a visitor at the capitol Wednesday. Verona correspondence in LaMoure Chronicle: Miss Anna Buddeen de parted for Valley City, where she will remain for several weeks. Miss Florence Fredrickson arrived Thursday evening from Farmington, Minn., for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Diebler. LaMoure Echo: J. A. Risk and C. J. Robideau made a flying auto trip to Litchville, Valley City and Hastings on Friday of last week. Bismarck Public Opinion: Frank E. Ployhar, who is busy installing the Bismarck Gas company, spent the early part of the week here. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Heidel went to Fargo on Thursday to attend the wed ding of Miss Maida Hollett and Ross McCartney, of Oakes. Mrs. C. L. Luessen and baby will re turn to the city on Saturday or Sun day from a five weeks' visit at points in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Verona correspondence in LaMoure Chronicle: W. A. Green, of Valley City, was here the first of the week looking after real estate interests. Miss Minnie Callahan, of Boyston, Mass., was an arrival in the city on Thursday evening, and from here will go to Rogers for a visit at the Norton home. New Rockford State Center: Mrs. Walter McDonell returned to her home in Valley City Tuesday after having spent a short time visiting at the Goss home. Bismarck Tribune: Mrs. Alfred Zuger, of Thayer street, is entertain ing as her guest during the week Miss Alma Jones, of Valley City. Miss Jones is a niece of Mrs. Zuger. C. W. Ferguson has accepted a po sition with the new Palace Clothing Co. on Fifth avenue. The company is rapidly getting ready for busienss and will announce their opening day soon. Frank Saunders, son of Prof and Mrs. S. J. Saunders, of Enderlin, has been visiting in the city this week at the borne of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Pierce, at 122 Normal ave nue. E. L. Kuhl and E. J. Muuro and fam ily, of Beulah, were in the city on Thursday, making the trip by auto. They stopped at the Hotel Kindred while here leaving for home Friday morning. Carl Baker and son, of Jackson county, Minn., are in the city for a visit and incidentally to buy a home. Mr. Baker owns farms around Valley City, and he wants to bring his family here to make their home. Mrs. R. L. Perry went down to Fargo on Thursday in company with Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Heidel to attend the wed ding of Miss Maida Hollett and Ross McCartney. Mrs. Perry came home with the C. C. Chaffee family Thursday night. Among those who returned home Thursday evening from attending the Hollett-McCartney wedding were Mrs. C. C. Chaffee, Miss Helen Chaffee and Homer Chaffee, Mr. Chaffee going on to the eastern cities on a buying trip. Young, of the Times-Record force, left Saturday afternoon to visit for a week with his mother at Hunter. Sim Mason left Sunday evening for Hebron, to attend to matters of busi ness and adjust some hail losses in that vicinity. Miss Alma Luessen returned to the city on Sunday evening rrom San born, where she spent several days visiting with friends. Frank White has gone to Bismarck to attend a meeting of the board of regents. He expects to return to the city on Saturday evening. Miss Gena Severson, who has been occupying a position at the John D. Gray department store, has gone to Larimore to accept a position. Kensal Journal: Buelah and Ruby Fredrickson, who have been visiting Mrs. Bartz and her daughter in Valley City, returned home Wednesday. Mrs. Julia Russell left Thursday morning on No. 3 for Helena, Mont., where she will visit relatives en route to Portland and her home at San Diego, Cal. Lynn Frazier, Republican candidate for governor, and James Mannahan, ex-congressman from Minnesota, were in Valley City between trains on Sat urday evening. Mrs. Nels Johnson and family and Miss Nettie Nelson have returned to the city from a several weeks' outing at Detroit, Minn., reporting a most pleasant time. Miss Delia Ruud, of the Winterer & Ritchie offices, was an over-Sunday visitor at her home at Oasselton. Miss Ruud returned to the c.ty Monday morning. Mrs. E. Wilson was an arrival in the city Thursday morning from the Twin Cities and points in Alberta and western Canada, where she has been spending the past three weeks. C. F. Mudgett, of the First National bank, returned to the city Monday morning on No. 7 from Lake Melissa, where he spent Sunday with his fam ily, who are spending a few weeks at the lake. Jamestown Capital: Stella Duns don, of Edgeley, a member of the 1916 class at the Valley City State Normal school, has been engaged to teach the second grade in the Jamestown public schools. Melvin Ferguson, of Maple Creek, Sask., was called to the city recently by the illness of his father, Chas Fer guson. Mr. Ferguson underwent an operation for pleurisy some weeks ago and his condition is not reassuring. Miss Eva Bailey and Miss Hattie Kelly returned to the city Monday morning from a visit of several days at Fargo and Fairmount. From here they went on to Dazey to the home of Miss Kelly. Mrs. Belle James, of Streator, 111., is in the city for a few weeks' visit at the home of Prof, and Mrs. James, on North Eighth avenue. Mrs. James ac companied Prof, and Mrs. James home on their return from a trip to Illinois. Miss Marie Steibel leaves on Tues day for Fargo, where she will spend a couple of days, going on to La Crosse, Wis., and from there will go to Chica go to spend a couple of months. Miss Steibel expects to return to the city again later in the fall. Mrs. Henry O. Smith, of Hamilton, Mont., will arrive in the city on Thurs day evening for a visit of a month at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Feath erstone, on West Fourth street. Mrs. Smith will visit her daughter, Dorothy, and her sister, Mrs. Featherstone. Miss Edith Matscnek, of Oshkosh, Wis., was a recent arrival in the city for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Luessen. Miss Matscheck is a niece of Mr. Luessen, and came here from Plaza, where she has been visit ing her tyrother. From here she will go to Dayton, Ore., and the coast for the remainder of the summer and the winter. The meeting of St. Catherine's Altar society Thursday afternoon with Mrs. W. J. Curren proved to be one of tbe best attended and most pleasant of re cent meetings. There were a large number present. Ottinger and son, Albert, and daughter, Mary, were in the city on Friday from Oriska. Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Enerson and Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Norton autoed to Hast ings Saturday morning. Miss Mary Flavin, of Litchville, was a visitor in the city on Friday, regis tering at the Valley Hotel. Alfred Bouck, of Bowler, Wis., was a Valley City visitor on Friday and was registered at the Valley Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Noltimier, who live north of Oriska, were in the city on Friday and attended the races. R. Dahmen, who reresent the Wy man Partridge Co., of St. Paul, was in the city Friday and left on No. 8 for Bismarck. Mrs. B. Isaacs, of Spiritwood, was in the city on Saturday as a guest, of Mrs. C. A. Bloomberg, at her home on North Sixth avenue. Ole Johnson, who resides on Elm avenue, reports that somebody stole a set of heavy work harness from his place Friday night. Miss Mildred Barr left Saturday morning for Jamestown, where she will visit with frierids and relatives for the next two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Herrick and Clif ford Barr left Saturday afternoon for Detroit. They expect to spend about two weeks at the lake. Miss Elsie Baertsch, of Marion, a graduate of the State Normal school, has been spending the week end with Dr. and Mrs. Zimmerman. Anamoose Progress: Miss Cora Wolff came up from Valley City Tues day and is spending the week visit ing in the city with friends. Rev. C. W. Finwall, of Bismarck, was a visitor in Valley City on Wednesday and while here was a guest at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Anton Quello, on First street. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Wright, of Bis marck, autoed down on Friday even ing and stopped over.here en route to Oriska, leaving for that place Sat urday morning. Marion Sentinel: Mrs. Frank Kram er and little daughter are visiting rel atives at Valley City this week. Mr. Kramer took them across country in his Ford Sunday. The only person we have run across who was not satisfied with the races at the fair grounds Friday afternoon is Casper Winkler, who was cajoled into betting on the mule race. Marion Sentinel: Miss Laura Olson, who is attending summer school at the Valley City Normal, accompanied by Miss Amy Evenson, were over-Sunday visitors at the K. A. Bakke home. Mrs. Georgia Johnstone and daugh ter, Blythe, left Saturday afternoon on No. 4 for Minneapolis, where Mrs. Johnstone will attend the Minnesota School of Business and take an advanc ed course in office training. W. H. Beachem was an arrival in the city on Friday evening from Kathryn, where he has been for several days attending to matters of business for the N. J. Olson & Sons Elevator Co., for which he is traveling representa tive. Sliarol and Edward Johnson, the two sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. John son, returned to the city on Friday morning from Fargo, where they spent the past week visiting with friends and taking in the circus on Wednes day. Miss Ruth Briggs was an arrival in the city on Thursday evening from Delevan, Wis., to spend a couple of weeks here visiting her father, E. H. Briggs. Miss Briggs is a teacher of domestic science in the schools at Milwaukee. Marion Sentinel: Mr. and Mrs. Karl Leopold boarded the Soo train at Valley City last week Tuesday to go to Bengough, Sask., Canada, to visit their sons, instead of spending the week at Valley City, as reported in our last issue. Mrs. J. W. Rodewald, 103 North Eighth avenue, delightfully entertain ed a few friends Friday afternoon in honor of her sister, Mrs. Galloway, of Chicago, who has been visiting here for the past week. Mrs. Galloway left for her home in Chicago Saturday aft ernoon. P. N. Pederson, the land man, ac companied by Mrs. Pederson and their son, left on Thursday morning for Brookings, S. D., where Mr. Peder son went on a short business trip. Mrs. Pederson and son will remain for a month's visit there with rela tives. C. W. Gad, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, was a visitor in Valley City on Friday with Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Gad and fam ily, Mr. Gad being a brother of A. A. Gad. He left Friday evening for Flax ton to visit another brother, and will stop over here again on his way home. Miss Marie Danielson was the host ess at a delightful party on Monday evening at her home on Fourth ave nue. There were 12 young ladies pres ent, who included a number of sum mer school students at the Normal school. After an evening spent in a pleasant social way, light refreshments were served. Farg Courier-News: Fifteen of the young women of the Broadway Meth odist church entertained at a parcel shower for Miss Maida Hollett Tues day evening at the home of Miss Pearl Vidger, 801 Third street north. Clarence Chilberg left on Wednes day evening for a short business trip to points in Montana. Miss Alice King, of Sweet Springs, Mo., was an arrival in the city Thurs day for a visit with friends. Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Spicer have mov ed into the new home which they re cently purchased from William Storey. Mrs. Chas. Maier and family were among those who went down to Far go to attend the circus on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. George Reidman are receiving congratulations over the ar rival of a fine baby boy, born on Fri day. Mrs. Louis Clark and son, Richard, were visitors in Fargo on Wednesday and attended the Ringling Bros, cir cus. I. M. Chapel and Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Genge, of Green Lake, Wis., are in the city and are stopping at the Valley Hotel. Mrs. E. Morgan and W. Morgan, of Hope, also Miss V. Voight, of Oakes, were in the city on Sunday and were stopping at the Valley Hotel. L. D. Richardson, general manager of the North Dakota Independent Tele phone Co., of Fargo, was in the city Monday and also made a side trip to Rogers. The Misses Elsie Holzman, Bertha Eldridge and Anna Tullius returned to the city on Wednesday, evening from a delightful trip through Yellow stone Park. Chief Swanson's dragnet brought two automobile speeders into court Friday morning. They were given the customary fine and advised to go and sin no more. A. S. Mitchell, of Brookings,, S. D., was in the city Thursday and was reg istered at the Hotel Kindred. Mr. Mitchell represents the Wells Pub lishing Co., of Chicago. Herman Stern, of the Straus Cloth ing Co., accompanied by Mrs. Stern and their two sons, returned to the city on Tuesday evening from a three weeks' visit at the lakes in Minnesota. W. E. McCurdy, who is running for county superintendent of schools in McLain county, arrived in the city on Thursday evening and stopped over here en route to Washburn from Du luth. R. A. Conover, of Fargo, who repre sents the Marshall-Wells Hardware Co., of Duluth, was a visitor in the city on Saturday and while here he was registered at the Hotel Kindred. Melvin Furgeson has returned to his home at Maple Creek, Sask., after spending a few days in the city, being called here by the illness and death of his father, Chas. Furgeson. Bismarck Public Opinion: The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Wanner was made pleasant the week end by a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Olsen, of St. Paul, also Miss Sarah Wright, of Bozeman, Mont. Miss Bertha Eldridge, the cashier at the John D. Gray store, returned to her work Monday morning after a couple of weeks' vacation, part of which she spent taking a trip to the Yellowstone national park. Miss K. Hoff, who has been spending the summer in the city with her sister, Miss Clara Hoff, left on Saturday eve ning for Ashby, Minn., where she will spend a month. She will return to the city again later in the fall. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Barth and two children, of Hartland, were visitors in Valley City this week from Sunday un til Tuesday, as guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weisman, on West Fifth street. They left for their home on Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Aamoth were vis itors at Fargo on Wednesday and at tended the Ringling Bros, circus. Mr. Aamoth also purchased a fine new six cylinder seven passenger Chal mers car. Grand Forks Herald: Miss Sarah Sand, of Bismarck, has arrived in the city to visit with her sister, Miss Guri Sand, deputy superintendent of schools, and to attend the fair. Miss Sand will spend her vacation as the guest of her parents near Emerado. Frank Lannon and family have re turned to the city from Detroit ana Fargo, where they have been spending the past week. They were accompan ied to Detroit from Fargo by Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Runk and baby, Mrs. Runk being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lannon. The Lannon family made the trip to Detroit and return by auto. Mrs. A. Kennedy, who has been in the millinery department at the John D. Gray store for the past season, has shipped her stock of millinery to Tow er City. Mrs. Kennedy's home is at Fargo, and she will be located this coming season at Tower City and Far go. She spent Thursday in the city packing up her stock of goods, which were shipped to Tower City on Fri day. Mrs. Kennedy's friends here will regret to learn of her decision to leave the city. Mrs. Fred Poull and little daughter, Polly, were arrivals in the city on Fri day from Logan, Mont., for a visit here at the home of her aunt, Mrs. W. O. Keene, on West Fifth street. Mrs. Poull will be remembered as Miss Vera Keene, daughter of Gene Keene, and formerly made her home here. She will leave in company with her little daughter on Tuesday for Buffalo, Far go and Wadena, Minn., for a further visit with friends, expecting to return here the latter part of next week for a short stay before going on to Wey burn, Canada. Oscar Dahl, the tailor, has begun tbe foundation for the erection of a new residence at the corner of Ninth ave nue and West Fifth street. The new house will have a full basement, and will be two story, containing seven rooms. It will be bungalow style and will be entirely modern. The new residence will probably be completed lbout Nov. 1, and Mr. Dahl expects tc move in at that time. He recently sold the home he is living in at pres ent on North Ninth avenue, to Joh Miller, the well-known farmer, who 'ives between Rogers and Sanborn Mr. Miller will move in this fall. Mandan Republican: William Storey, of Valley City, was here Tues day looking after his real estate in terest. Mr. Storey is seriously con sidering further investment here. Miss Blanche True, of Fargo, was In the city on Saturday between trains. Miss True came in on 108 and left for Fargo on No. 4, being en route homo from an extended trip to San Francis co and points west. Peter Fenstad and family are mov ing from the Mrs. Jennie Wright house, on West Fifth street, to the residence formerly occupied by Dr. Spicer, on Eighth avenue, which was purchased by Mr. Fenstad from Prof. Biggs, who now resides at Mandan. S. Saytre, of Courtenay, was in the city on Saturday morning on his way to Fargo. Mr. Saytre is the Courtenay agent for the Avery Manfg. Co., of Fargo. E. R. Fritch, of Leal, was in the city Friday. Mr. Fritch had been to St. Paul, where he went with a car load of stock for the farmers' club at Dazey. Mr. Fritch left for home Sat urday morning on No. 7. Marion Sentinel: Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Bakke, Mrs. E. D. Trapp and Clar ence Trapp motored to Valley City Monday in Mr. Bakke's Case car. Clar ence drove a new Ford touring car back for Bakke & Trapp. Mrs. A. A. Gad and the children re turned to the city on Thursday eve ning from a several weeks' visit at Milnor, where they have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Gad's mother. Mr. and Mrs. Gad and family make their home at the Valley Hotel. Miss Esther Fowler, of Casselton, who has been visiting in Valley City as the guest of Miss Elizabeth Peake, left Wednesday afternoon for Fargo in company with Miss Peake to attend the wedding of Miss Maida Hollett, later returning to her home at Cas selton. Mrs. L. II. Bussen and son expect to return to their home at Baker this week, after a couple of weeks' visit in Valley City at the home of Mrs. Bus sen's sister, Mrs. James Kelly, and family. Mrs. Bussen is also a sister of Miss Mayme Brady, of this city, and she formerly resided here. Rev. C. E. Vermilya and his family expect to return to the city this week from Leech lake, near Walker, Minn., where the family have been enjoying a several weeks' outing. Rev. Vermilya spent several weeks in Chicago at Chi cago university, returning to Leech lake for the family. They will return to the city by auto. The report that Dr. Palmer was ex perimenting with a submarine proved to be premature at least. The report became current when he run the Nur sery company automobile into the riv er Saturday near the high line trestle. Doc. escaped before the boat hit the water and it was later brought back to land with block and tackle. Mrs. T. E. Davis, of Marinette, Wis., was an arrival in Valley City on Sun day. Mrs. Davis is traveling from Marinette to McKenzie, N. D., making the trip with a horse and buggy. Mr. Davis was an arrival here from Mc Kenzie on Sunday, and he and Mrs. Davis spent the day here at the Valley Hotel, expecting to leave for McKen zie on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Lamb, who were recently married in the city, were ar rivals here on Thursday evening from Pillsbury and Rogers, where they have been visiting with friends and relatives. They left Saturday morn ing on No. 3 for a visit with friends at Spade, Neb., and will also make a stop with friends in Chicago, return ing to Dilworth about Sept. 1, where they will make their home. Mrs. Edwin Jacobson and Mrs. O. T. Mason entertained the members of the Golden Rule circle of the Epworth M. E. church on Wednesday after noon at the home of Mrs. Jacobson. There were about 30 ladies present, and the afternoon was pleasantly passed at sewing and social chat. At 5 o'clock a delicious lunch was served, after which some kodak pictures were taken of the party. A delightful time was reported. Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Norton, of Cres co, Iowa, arrived in the city Friday evening and are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Enerson. Mr. and Mrs. Norton are on their way home from a trip through the Yellowstone National park. They were accompanied by their daughter and her husband on their trip, the latter continuing their journey on to the coast. Mr. Norton was formerly dairy commissioner of the state of Iowa. C. C. Chaffee and family were among those who went to Fargo on Thursday to attend the wedding of Miss Maida Hollett. Mr. Chaffee will go on from Fargo to the east and will visit New York city and Chicago to do the fall buying for the Chaffee store. The Chaffees went to Fargo by auto and Mrs. Chaffee, Helen and Homer will return home Thursday night. While there he met Clar ence Pederson, a former resident of Valley City, who bought grain at North Valley City for several years and who went to Makoti about three months ago. Mr. Pederson still thinks there is no place like Valley City. Mr. Bohnhoff reports that the crops in that part of the country are fine. Bismarck .Tribune: Miss Helen Register, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Register, and Miss Gertrude Mount, of the city, will leave today on No. 4 for Fargo, where they will be brides maids at the wedding of Miss Maida Hollett and Ralph McCartney, of Oakes. The wedding will be solemn ized Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Hollett. Other mem bers of the bridal party will include the Misses Dorothy Hutsinpillar, of Oakes, and Anna Burseta, of Coopers town.
