Ne York Chicago THE TRIP WEST One of County's "Seventy-One" Writes of the Tnp to Camp Lewis. Camp Lewis Wash June 10 1918 Editor Willmar Tribune Dear Sir From the attitude of a person of more or less at leisuie to one ushered into a position where commands are law is a vicissitude that is ver apparent and not to be passed into without notice Such however, was experience as one of the "71 that left Willmar on May 25th last Leaving home and friends was not entirely an eas\ matter and was not ac complished without a teehng of emotion However the glad handshakes and fare well wishes of the numerous fnends that had gathered to bid us farewell was a stimulant and encouragement to resolve to go and do the duties that had been imposed upon us with a strong er determination than ever before USE mind) for we went thru the Ilocky Mountains and the Glacier Nit'onal Park during the night as was also the case in part when going thru the Cab cades, but in this latter case the fore part of the evening was spent viewing the strange freak of nature work Here we went thru a four mile tunnel A mountain range is very elusive and misleading One is verv apt to think that the mountain you are viewing is much nearer then in reality is the fact As an illustration, at Leavenworth. W ash a town at the foot of the Cascade mountains, we made a short stop and to me it seemed that those gigantic mountains were but a couple of city blocks away but was told by the resi dents of the town that they were four miles away To me the most interesting part of our trip was our travel between Willow Creek and Wenatchee, Wash Here we went thru the most gorgeous and beau tiful scenes that one could ever wish to see, constantly winding about along a swift running river and exceedingly high sand hills and with the s.un iust setting in the west, throwing it3 rays on the hills and water made a gulden panorama long to be remumbered On the immediate bank of this river all along was orchards of appl» trees The reason for planting orchards on the river bank is in order to have easy access to water for irrigation, the water being pumped up from the river Another reason for so placng the orchaids prob ably the chief one) is because there was no other place to plant it for the sand hills would grow no apples Wenatchee is famous for its apples and boasts of being the home of the red apple We arrived at Tacoma early Tuesday morning the 28th, a few hours ahead of our schedule After a few hours wait here we were taken out to Camp Lewi", American Lake, and got our first glimpse at the place that we are sojourning at Literally speaking the camp is a oee hive of humanity where every thing *s executed with speed and snap, in tact make ltsnappy' is a word that is much in vogue with the officers and it is being lived up to in every respect We got our unitorm and gun practically as soon as we got here and were immediately put to drilling The officers tell us that we are to do work in a months time that took three months for the men to accom plish that were here before us, and 1 believe they mean it foi we sure aie working hard We are in strict quarantine so we have had no opportunity to explore the camp as a whole. They however, took 'us out one day on a seven mile hike in what is known here as no man's land" Here we saw trenche- of ail kinds of shape and manner anJ every thing else imaginable to the essence of modern warfare training All of us Kadiyohi county boys, with the exception of a few that volunteered tor the spruce cutting camp at an couver and have gone there, are in the 24th Co in what is known a.- the oJepot Brigade and which is really only a distri bution place After a month stay here we will be assigned to *egular companies and then undoubtedly we will all be separated It was my pleasure to see th« strange phenomena of a total eclipse of the sun here last Saturdav atrt'rnoon at about 4 o'clock To find it all o* a sudden getting dusk in the I 1st of day and Jiot a cloud visible is a rare th'ng ankon some- thing that don't happen very of In conclusion, a trip to the vv« st is very interesting and enjoyable, but only as such For me give me good old Min nesota and particular spot, Kandi yohi county and it suffices With sincere greeting, I am. WOR OR FIGHT No Room For Idlers in These Mo mentous Times in the U. S. The National "Work or Fight" law now has the approval of .President Wil son, and compels all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 50 years to engage in a productive occupation, -for a specified number of hours each week, Minnesota has something of a proprietary interest in the new law, as the "Enlist or Work" movement was in stituted in this1 state by Major John Yost, Recruiting Officer for the Minne sota District. Municipalities within the state were quick to take up the movement and with in a few weeks several cities had ordin ances spread on their books legalizing the move The State Public Safety Com mission followed up the movement by issuing an order which gives the entire state a "Work or Fight" law and makes it obligatory on the part of peace officers to seek out the idlers So far the fol lowing states have enacted similar laws, Maryland, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, South Dakota and Minnesota, and legislation of a like nature is pending in at least a dozen other states The working out of the new law will mean the subordination of all industry to war work and the building up of the United States armies. Thousands of industrial plants in the country engaged on government contracts and war acti vities are in need of men, both skilled and unskilled. The Regular Army can absorb additional thousands and can train them into fighting men in far shorter time than men can be trained at National Army cantonments. The plan is to take from 30 to 50 percent of a regiment in raw recruits and train the men alongside of experienced sold iers. Such recruits are ready for over seas service in two to three months All branches of Army service are open at the present time, and excellent oppor tunities are afforded men to advance Mechanics and skilled workmen are in great demand Regardless of a man's occupation he can And the same line of work in one or another branches of the service. MUUKKBTXHO WOOX,. The United States Government has commandeered the entire 1918 wool clip of the country and is going anout re ceiving and distributing of wool in the following manner. They have designated ten different towns in the United Sci»tos as receiving and distributing centers and will ap point one or more firms in these dis tributing "centers to receive wool on consignment and display the same in a proper manner so that the representa tives of the Wool Department of the War Industry Board can examine and appraise the same. After this is lone, the Quartermasters' Department will designate the Mills entitled to receive the same and these Mills or tha Govern ment will pay the firm at the distribut ing center a small fee for their services so that any producer can receive the full Government price for his wool, by consigning the same to an authorized firm at a distributing center. At the Twin Cities, the Government has authorized the Equity Co-Operative Exchange to receive wool for their ac count. The Exchange convinced the Government that they had sufficent fire proof storage facilities at-their com mand, to store and show the entire clip of the Northwest. Since the Government's action in ap proving .the Exchange as a receiving Arm for wool in the Twin Cities, many shipments of wool have reached the Exchange and many requests are com ing to them for sacks and twine. This action on the part of the Government in recognizing a farmers organization at a terminal market is very interesting, inasmuch as ii is probably the first time that the United States Government has ever recognized a farmers organization, doing business on a Terminal market iv«* When you nave the backache the liver or kidneyB are sure to be out of gear. The Northern Division bureau of mil itary relief has been making fine pro gress in locating soldiers in the service who are receiving no letters from home People returning from France speak most feelingly on the importance of this subject and say that home news or lack of it will make or break a man. Captain Richards of the Canadian army spoke principally on this subject in his address to the Northern Division recent ly. He remarked that if he were in command of a battalion about to go into an offensive, he would hold back all cheerful home news until the day of the attack. He declared that home news of the rght sort works miracles, especially among the "lonesomes." Northern Division chapters have been sent a supply of post cards to send to their men in the service. These cards are addressed to the bureau of military relief, Minneapolis, Minn., and the sold ier is requested to fill in the names, unit addresses and home addresses of certain comrades who are apparently not hearing from home When a card is received at Minneapolis, the name and unit address is sent, together with a letter, to the Red Cross chapter of the boy's home town, regardless of what part of the United States from which he may come. The letters explain the necessity of our men hearing from home and sug gests their finding some patriotic friend or schoolmate who will pledge a weekly letter to the man. The majority of these requests meet with splendid re sponse and our "lonesomes" abroad are rapidly finding "backers" at home, but occasional names have been received without home addresses. Post cards will be furnished the chapters of Minnesota Montana, North and South Dakota, upon request reced ed at the Northern Division office LIFT YOU CORNS OFF WITH FINGERS Telia how to loosen a tender corn or callus so It lifte out without pain.
