During the night sometime they broke into the latter place and took several drills of various sizes to use on the safe. They then proceeded to the Salkowske, Glatzbach & Clausen store. Finding the doors securely bolted they broke out a panel in the door just large enough to admit a man's body and through this they crawled. The store is in the middle of the block and on both sides are business buildings in which there is no one sleeping. Half a block off is Burg's hotel. The men had evidently noted well. SAFE DOOR BLOWN OFF. They poured the explosive fluid into the cracks of the safe door and at tached a fuse, then filled the cracks air tight with soap and after wrapping the safe with clothes secured from the counters to muffle the sound, awaited the explosion. It came with a force that tore the door from the hinges and hurled it across the room, where it struck against a small platform on which was a desk, and smashed one side of this into splinters. The door was also broken in several places. The men riffled the safe, taking all the cash in the drawer and a tin box containing papers, and made a hasty get-a-way through the rear door, which they unlocked. They went west from the city and at a schoolhouse two miles out stopped and built a fire and warmed themselves and went through the box of papers. Finding nothing they scattered the papers about and remained in the building until morning, when they proceeded west toward Cobden. TAKE TRAIN TO SANBORN. Arriving at that village two of them bought tickets for Lamberton and boarded the morning train, but got off at Sanborn. The other went south. FINISH OF NEW EXCHANGE IS NEAR Week's Work for Finisihng Touches on Extensive Telephone Remodeling. The workmen wbo have been engaged on the local telephone line for several months returned to work Monday after an absence of two weeks and the re modled exchange is now nearing com pletion. If things go along smoothly without delays Manager Otto R. Hohn says it should be practically completed in a week's time. The switchboard, made to accommo date 400 phones, has arrived and is being placed in the new rooms in the rear of the Brown County Bank and the principal work now is to connect the wires with the board. There re mains a little cable work to be finished up near the Lutheran church and theI setting of about seventy-five poles and stringing of wires on them on the out skirts of the city but this later will be done after the central office has been moved and will not interfere with the perfect working of the exchange in the other residence and in the business districts. TROUBLE FOR TWO OFFICERS (Continued from page 1) seem worried about any possible con sequences. He said, as he under stood it, it was customary and he did not think anything could be done. Public sentiment seems largly a gainst the officers as regards this A large number who have been seen by the Review representative have been emphatic in their denuncia tion, saying that if the prisoner's rights have been violated as Judge Webber says, and as Koch's attor neys, the affair assumes the magni tude of an outrage so flagrant as to call for investigation and action. Most of those who condemn the act do not attach so much blame to the two officers, as they believe they were acting under instructions from some source. The sheriff practically has admitted as much, though he was un willing to name his advisor. ANOTHER VIEW POINT. The defense of the sheriff and the chief is that is a broad principle of the law allows a jailer to take such marks of identification as will enable him to recover his prisoner in case of an escape. Attorneys for the citizens' committee say that iden tification by means of finger prints, and especially thumb prints, is a com mon thing in England, especially, and is coming more into use every day in the United States. They say the courts have passed on the matter of taking pictures and the Bertilion measurements and de I clared them legal and that they eon stitute an assault if the prisoner re sists as much as does the" taking of the hand imprints.
