WktlitTkm, M4 WLM Thjr Art The great excitement engender! throughout the territory by the rich strikes in the Lake Valley and Kings ton dixtricU, prompted a Gazette re porter to tarn his attention in that di rection; consequently he gathered his grip and blankets, a few days ago, and started for the country where the wheel of fortune in iU tickle turning has made men rich in an hour. The ride from Las Vegas southward is a pleasant one at this reason of the year, as Ulu ol does not send tin rays so vertical as he did a few months ago In the morning, just at feunrur, the train filled with passengers on their way to the silver fields pulled into Nutt station, the nearest railroad sta tion to Lake Valley. t present it is not a very inviting place, but fe houses as yet having been erected, but a bright future is beginning to cast its light before and Nutt station may yet make itself felt as a good uoint. The twelve miles intervening between the station and the new city was soon pass ea over, ana at u o clock the anxious wayfarers were landed at their destina tion. Tho festival in honor of the patron saint of San Miguel which was observed on Thursday evening of this week was a grand occasion aud was participated in by at least four thousand people. Rev. J. B. Fayct, the parish priest of San Miguel had made cxtonj-ive prepar ations for the day. San Miguel is situ ated centrally for a largo oopulaticn up and down the Pecos valley in this coun ty. It was formerly the county seat tor this county and although it has not enjoyed for many years its ancient prestige, yet it is still a center for con siderable trade, and since the building of t,ho railroad which crosses tho Pecos a short distance aboye it, considerable improvements have been made and new life infued into tho town. Rev. J. B. Fayct is tho parish priest and is a zealous worker in the Lord' Tineyard, and lets no opportunity pass by which he can advance tho dominion of religion. A general invitation was extended to all to be present at the festivities Thurs day which was well responded to. There were sixteen priests from various portions of the county and territory who participated in the solemnities of the oc casion. Among those present a Gazette reporter obtained the following names: Rev. Fathers Defuria, Santa Fe: J. M. Coudert, Geutilo, Mari, Rossi, Massa, and Tamassini, Las Vegas; A. Four chegu, Sapollo, Guerin and J. Accor sini, Mora; R. Maitinez, Pena Blanca; Malleuche, Pecos; Redon. Anton Chico. Vespers was observed at 6 o'clock, rendered by Rev. The procession was formed with statutes of St. Michael and of tho blessed virgin, carried in advance, and marched around r'he plaza. At 10 o'clock mass was celebrated with solemnity by by Rev. Father Geutile, assisted by Fathers Redon and Tomasinl, and a most eloquent sermon was delivered by Rev. J. Accorsini. assistant priest of Mora. The' text was from Apostles XII, 10, and was highly appropriate to the occasion. Rev. Accorsini is a young man. born and educated in Canada, and is a speaker of rare abilities and elo quence. His sermon was highly ap preciated by all who had the pleasure of listening to h.m. Father Fayct is to be congratulated on having made so great a success of the festival, which will long be remem bered by tho peopla of Sau Miguel. Curd or Thank. To tho officers and men of the East Side Hose company, who, with most excellent judgment, and by vigorous effort, saved my property from fire yes terday morning, I offer my heartiest thinks; and to others who labored and guarded to the same end, I am thor oughly grateful, and beg to assure all that I appreciate to the full the great service rendered me. The prompt ap pearauce of tho hose company on the scene of action aud its effective work there show how invaluable to the com munity is this organization, whose sole purpose is to defend without price any and all against tho calamity of iiro. Respectfully, O L. Houghton'. Fi oiectiu ; . Mr. J. A. Murphy, of this city, will start for the Percha country on a pros pecting tour about Wednesday or Thursday. A company has been form ed to keep him in the field, and all those desiring to join the company and giye him their aid will do; well to see him before that time.
