COUNTY CONVENTION
The Beltrami County Republi
can convention will be held at
Baglej'Dam on Friday, June 20th.
for the purpose of selecting five
delegates, to atlend the State Con
vention Wednesday, July 1st at
St. Paul, Minn. The election to
)e held as prescribed in the
primary election law of 1895.
B)T
order of
J. NYGAARD,
Chairman.
AOOLPI I PEDEUSON,
Secretary.
i A BIG DIFFERENCE.
The New York Press has taken
the trouble to maka some very un
comfortable comparisons for* the
free traders, giving in tabular
form the difference in the volumes
of business transacted in New
York and London respectively un
der the Cleveland and the Harri
son administrations. In the year
1892 we were working under the
republican tariff, but in 1895 we
were under the democratic tariff
for revenue only laws. The
figures arej somewhat instructive
to the populists who are blind
enough to still adhere to the cause
of democracy. In 1892 New York
was doing a larger volume of busi
ness, as show by the bank clear
ing house returns, than London
TVus, although the latter had the
largest population. For example,
the clearing house returns for
New York for that year were $36,-
662,496,202, and those o\ London
only $32,542,521,473, the New
York business exceeding the Lon
don business for the year by more
than $4,000,000,000.
But in 1895 there was a vast
difference in the state of things,
New York doing buY $29,841,795,-
922, while London's volume was
swollen to the normous total of
$36,950,780,222. An by includ
ing the two months of January
and February in 1896, London ex
cess over New York was more than
$8,000,000,000.
The showing is a conclusive one
that free trade, or even a reduced
tariff, almost at once transfers to
the English the large balance of
trade in manufactured goods that
is so essential to our ability to
meet interest and traveling ex
penses. If our factories had not
been stricken down by the Wil
son-Gorman tariff law and the re
peal of the Sherman silver law,
they would today be shipping
good to all parts of South Amer
ica in active competition with
England, even though at a bare
cost price. And if our factories
had been in operation, their em
ployees could have bought a very
much larger proportion of the
productions of our farms, and the
American farmer would not be
paying two transportations to and
from the other side of the Atlantic
on so large a bill of woolen and
cotton goods.
Senator Teller and his com
panions may have made a serious
mistake in lcaying the republican
party, but the republican party
also made a serious mistake in put
ting itself flat-footed in a position
hostility to our own mines and of
favoritism to thi mines of South
Africa and Australia. Th United
States are no longer that 4"!d
producing country which was
some years ago their glory and
their magnificence. Africa and
Australasia have outstripped
them, and every percenlage of in
crease in the value of gold is an
increase in the wealth of those
European nations whose peoplo
hold the stock of the new gold
mines. Bu there is no use to
weep over it. McKinley and
Hobart will be elected, and all
the people can do to relieve the
strain upon their condition is to
elect silver congressmen, some-
tiring Tin. \yio$
KI:K ha
fore seen lit to suggi st us advis
able. And it docs not recommend
that policy because it Lelieves in
!:v -liver, but because there is a
limit to which tlie gold in teres!
shouhJ riot be permitted to go
without a rebuke.
The Great Northern railway
will have scrapers in the field on
its axtension to this place before
the people are fairly -aware of it,
and another season will find the
lake front lined with tents of real
honest summer tourists.
Congressman Towne of the Du
luth district has made the mis
take of declaring himself out of
the Republican party. He maj
or may not run independently foi
another term, but if he does, most
of the country newspapers in the
district would be with him. It
would be a good healthy lesson t(.
the national managers of th(
party if the people were to elect a
free silver congress. One extrenn
would thus conteract the other.
Bro. Speelman ought not to get
hot at the Bemidji townsite com
pany about so small a matter as
not being permitted to operate a
emigration agency for Turtle
Lake on the company's lake front
free of charge. Th townsite com
pany will never object to honest
turists camping on its beautiful
properties for purposes of recrea
tion, but it does reserve the ex
clusive right to enjoin business
houses for planting themselves for
a season.

HIS Finn ESCAPE} WAS USELESS.
Hail to Us the Stairs to Froaa
the BarnliiK Ilwlldlns.
An amuains story cornea ti-om the
Kcnnlngton road alwtit a lire escape.
It might very easily have been a seri
ous story, all the same. It seems that
a fire broke out yesterday morning Ih
a dwelling house over a baker's sUopi
and blazed up gaily In tho strong
wind. Forthwith, their trots up l,,til-
iiian A. J. Waller with his trusty tire
escape. (It was not really trusty, hut,
no doubt, he thought it.was trusty.)
The occupants of the house were still
in the burning building. So ho pitched
his machine, dashed up and forced his
way into the upper rooms in hopes of a
gallant rescue, lie found the place de
serted. He also found, when he re
turned to his tiro escape, that there
was plenty of lire but no escape So,
like the good people whom he had de
i H1 to rescue, he was compelled to
u__- the stairs of the housereally a
terrible comedown for hintand make
his way out through the back premis
es. The obvious moral, of course:
"All's well." etc. But there is another,
and that is. that a fire escape should
not be left deserted without anyone to
shift it. should occasion arise.rail
