Timber Trespassers on White
Earth Reservation Active.
Special Agent Dufrees of the
general land office, who was deural
tailed to investigate the govern
in out timber trespassers on the
southern portion of the White
Earth reservation, has concluded
his investigations and reported
them.
The investigation was brought
about in the earliest instance by
United States Indian Agent
Michelet who has been ceaseless
in his efforts during the past
winter to put a stop to the
nefarious and high handed vandal
ism of timber poaching, which
has been going on unchecked for
the past several years.
It is estimated that over 200,000
feet of green pine and other timber
were cut and sold off the reserva
tion the past winter.
Several persons have been ar
rested by the agency police during
the past winter and turned over
to the custody of the United
States marshal.
Indictments were found against
sixteen of these persons, who will
be tried at the coming session of
United Statds court, which con
venes at Fergus Falls the coming
week.
During the past Week parties
have been looking over the topog
raphy of the western portion of
the reservation from Detroit north
in the interest of some of the
great railway systems of the state,
and with a view of building an ex
tension north across the western
portion of the reservation.
The Value or Good Seed Oats.
MoRt farmers recognize the im
portance of getting well cleaned
seed. In the fanning, the hulls
and light oats are blown out, and
it takes less seed for an acre.
Cheap oats bought for seed is of
ten full of the seeds of injurious
weedsin fact this is the usual
way in which our farms become
infested with mustard. Mustard
seldom be entirely removed
from oats by fanning as it sticks
in the hulls. Farms free from
mustard are the only safe sources
of seed. i
It is just as important, when
buying seed, to get the variety
which has yielded well in the
locality if possible. There are
many varieties of oats, and these,
although given the same care and
treatment, will sometimes differ
in] yield as much as 20 bushel per
acre. The extra yield of a good
variety is almost clear profit. But
a farm cannot afford to test ma ny
varieties and seedsmen offer a
very limited choice. The selec
tion of the best varieties of grain
is properly the work of the ex
periment farm.
The result of the work of the
last six years, in testing 34 kinds
of oats, has shown that the variety
known as Improved Ligowo is a
heavier yielder than any other
tested, averaging 5J bushels more
per acre than the next best. As
this variety is difficult to get from
seedsmen, it has been grown for
seed on the experiment farm, and
this spring a limited quantity is
for sale, sacked 0 B. Grand
Rapids, at 65 cents per bushel
cash to accompany order.

Everything returned to its nat
order last week when the
smiling countenance of Peter Ja
cobson was again seen at the Big
Meadows. During his absence ev
erybody felt that there was some
thing the matter somewhere but
nobody could tell where it was
until Peter came back, and now
that he has returned all is serene
once more.
Last Monday William Bruck
man's youngest son was taken ill
and upon returning home from
school went to his bed. He is very
weak and has all the symptoms of
lung fever. Ole Peterson, who
has been sick with the same dis
ease for about four weeks, is now
able to walk about.
Mrs. Campbell informs us that
the postoffice for which she has
been working so long is just
about to be granted her. Four
names have been sent inGreen
woon, Meadows, Marple and City.
As there are so many "woods" in
the state already she does not
think that the department will
choose Greenwood for the
name of the new postoffice, but
thinks the name is pretty sure to
be Meadows.
