Now and then there is a deal of talk as to the virtue of jack pine lands for growing wheat, and it has been claimed that Beltrami county will never be a great farming county because jack pine lands are not permanently fit for wheat. The day will ccme, and that before long, when we shall look back upon such talk in astonish ment and wonder that people knew so little of northern "Minne sota. Sandy soiiVmay not be the best for raising wheat, but the rais ing of wheat will never be greatly desired by the farmers of this section. There are other lines of farming that ar far more profit able. Is not the Red river valley, with all its boasted fer tility, doing its utmost to get away from the raising of so much wheat? Some of the finest farms in Minnesota are to be found within a few miles of Bemidji. Their number will steadily increase. By the time the Red river valley escapes from the curse of raising too much wheat, Beltrami county farms, which are diver sified farms from the beginning, will be on a par with the best that the state affords. And it should not be over looked that while everything may be raised on a Beltrami county farm which a prairie farm produces, the former has a wealth that the latter can never knowmillions of feet of hard woods. If you want a farm "as is a larm" get a Beltrami county farm. HE Pioneer is endeavoring to give Bemidji a first class daily news servicegeneral and local. That it is succeeding and that there is an increasing appreci ation of this fact the steady gain in subscriptions gives evidence. The gain has not been rapid but 1 s, it has been sure. No special ef-1 fort has been made to secure to own though a goothan many,d ess pecially in Bemidji itself, have substituted the daily for the!1 weekly. A good newspaper, daily and weekly, is of invaluable benefit to Bemidji and northern Minnesota, and we invite the sup port of the whole people in the effort of the Pioneer to be such a newspaper. We are confident that such support will day by day be tendered the Pioneer in ing the same period the Weekly! dium, $3.504.90 stockers and feed ers, $1.754.10 cows, $1.50@4.25 Pioneer has more Jiel it heifers, $2.oo@5.oo calves, $2.oo@ 6.50. COUNTR i nunn jjijm MM The Kelliher Post is hammer ing hard for a blacksmith shop. There were none so poor in the north country as not to be thank ful. Blackduck prates of its pretty schoolma'ams. Where will you find any other? The north country is the great est on earth. We have the word of every north country news paper for it. We regretfully chronicle the fact that for some time past the Gully Sunbeam has denied us the usual weekly ray. The Border Budget of Kooch idling had the organization of Bemidji as a city fully accom plished packed up with numerous other good things last week. The Thief River Falls News discovers an unholy plot at Crookston to unseat Congress man Steenerson but refuses to more than darkly hint at details. The young women evangelists have begun a series of revival meetings at Thief River Falls. The situation in that city since the recent election, if we may be lieve the papers, certainly calls for extreme measures. Hundreds of land seekers are daily arriving at Blackduck ac cording to the Blackduck Amer ican. If anybody but an Amer ican were responsible for this statement there would be room for some doubts as to numerical truthfullness. MARKET QUOTATIONS. _____ Minneapolis Wheat.
