GOLD AXI) SILVER CLUB. A. Hundred Member* of Smeh an Organi zation at the Outlet. While the currency question has been racking the brains of many throughout the country and during the past few months has been the chtef topic of con sideration and discussion by politicians, the people of Vir ginia have imbibed their inform ation singly and alone. On Fri day last, however, a call for a meeting of the "Gold and Silver Club" was circulated and in a few hours had received the en dorsement and signature of over one hundred of our prominent citizens. The first meeting of the Club will be held at the city hall to morrow evening, when a per manent organization will be per fected. The Club will be distinct from party affiliation, having for its sole object the interests of the establishment of a staple cur rency, and the desire to see both gold and silver enter freely into the coinage of our country with out unjust discriminations, and that their relative value as a medium of exchange be main tained by equitable laws. On Tuesday evening next, the Club will be addressed at Crock ett's Opera House, by Hon. Chas. A. Towne, of Duluth, whose record on the currency question is in keeping with his record on all subjects of public import. On this occasion the Virginia City Band and the members of the Club will escort Mr. Towna to the hall, which should be filled to overflowing by interest ed American citizens of Virginia and neighboring towns. DIED IX A MINE. fire In The Otceola Copper Mine At CW«. met Entomb* Forty Men. At 3 o'clock on Saturday after noon afire broke out in the shaft of the Osceola copper mine at Calumet, and forty of the sturdy laborers were missing at the roll call, being either burned or sui focated before they could effect an escape. The fire started in shaft No. 3, which is used to carry the miners to the surface from the mine, and when the fire broke out all the men and boys employed in the mine, above two hundred in num ber. made a rush for the shaft in the hope of being taken to the surface. The fire was too rapid for them, however, and the chance of escaping from the shaft was entirely cut off by flames and smoke. The majority of the imprisoned miners made a break for across cut and in this way managed to reach another shaft, from which they were taken to the top. The names of men known to be in the mine are as follows: Trembath, mine boss Richard Bicket, Michael Johnson, Rich ard Grenfell, Michael Schulte, John Matzen, William Bryant, Francis Lander, Alex Danfell, John Cudlip, Thomas Curtis. Robert Johns, Peter Martin, Jos. Saghte, James Harrington, Wm. Donald, Barney Elgore, Anton Scezweak, all miners, and Peter Strangard and Walter Dohle, drill borers. After all hope of rescuing any of the unfortunate men had been ^abandoned, the shafts were closed to smother the flames. WiU Glee A Dance. Tlie Virginia Bast?
