Call at the dye works and get ft bottle of the lightning grease and paint remover. There will be rattling of bones in St. Paul shortly after Gover nor elect Lind takes charge. Virginia was .figured bj* the conservative ones as a close pre cinct, and the returns corrobor ate their estimates. Rough Rider Roosevelt' was elected by a rousing majority and the Tammany tiger will take it out in growling for another term. T._ Waldo Murphy made an enviable showing in Stunlz township, where he received 177 votes, but he still lacked a few. Every place touched by the D. M. & N. line, except Virginia and Mt. Iron, returned a Fusion majority. Jehu Baker Middlecoff will succeed Phineas Ayer as Judge of Probate. Mr. Middlecoff lhad a hard run ui',for his landed 30b money' safely. but Safe blowers tapped the safe And did a vote for Ayer really mean a vote for Middlecoff? Nay. Did you see the promised "roorback"on the eve of election? Alfred Merritt addressed a let ter to the voters in Monday's Herald, alleging that if the re publican legislative ticket from the range were eleoted a move would be made to cut royalties on state lands from 25 to 10 gents per ton. The people will have an eye to the next legislature, however, and such an act would ra^a howl of indignation that would mean the political doom of anv party attempting it. The City of Duluth, which the News Tribune averred would re turn a Morris majority, gave Towne 1343 plurality, and/Towne carried the county by over 900. We trust no one will ask whether or not the voters of St. Louis county, where the return of prosperity has been most pro nounced, are satisfied with ex isting conditions, as in the face of a majority of 183 for Morris in '96 and 910 for Towne in '98 it would be a hard query to satis factorily answer. The state legislature is safely republican, add the re election of Senator Davis is assured. being done in much the same or two instances. The plan was manner as have all the safe all right, if viewed in that light, blowing jobs on that line. A but was not made early enough srtiall amount of money was in the safe, but as the door was locked after finishing it is not yet known how much was secur ed. That Ely postoffice appointment came near being an expensive experience for Judge Morris. If 4. -n ,j xh Towne carried every ward and almost every precinct in the city of Duluth. And still the N. T. promises to wa~m up the range traitors. The people of the ranges de mand an act by the state legisla ture providing for a vote upon county division within two years. The range stood well by E. B. Hawkins. He had a hard run for his money, and Morris was not in it as a sprinter in his dis trict. When the returns become com plete, the knowing ones may be enabled to tell how it happened. The procine proclivities of Du luth were made the more ap parent on Tuesday, when the only range candidate on the re publican ticket was turned down in Duluth by the largest ma jority accorded any Fusion can didate. But no has yet accused the Duluth republicans of being "traitors." After sizing up the score of dough and Lind and Morris and Towne at Eveleth two years ago, showing a goodly majority for the republicans, and taking a note of the majorities given Lind and Towne at that point last Tuesday, we can but wonder what the result might have been Vir-1 had not the wonderful, boasted and paid influence of StSV eth Star been exerted in behalf of the republican nominees in the campaign just ended. After the result is finally de clared let us get down to business and give politics a rest until .the issues of the spring campaign appear. Some questionable election methods are reported from a neighboring precinct, of which more may be heard later The duties of superintendent of schools will be adrnini ared after January 1st by a hon duct. 70 years hence the hog may enjoy the whole Virginians and range residents will be electing the officers for Iron county. uluth stye The people of the ranges sympathize with Neil Mclnnis in his defeat. He must charge it to the Duluth hog, however, and await the opportunity of evening the score. Duluth is for Duluthians. The political beliefs of candidates cut no ice. If sagacious CJncle Joe had let it *been known 24 hours earlier that he desired certain at the Duluth & Iron Range de- nominees beaten the result pot at Biwabik last night, the might have been different in one to secure the aid of residents of the towns and villages of the ranges. The Duluth hog took every thing in sight Tuesday. Some day when the porker gets fat there will be invitations to a grand slaughter. A vote for Westcott did not mean a yote for Middlecofi, evi dently, and had the Fusionists been the set of party apelsts that some would picture them and had carried politics into their county ticket, Mr. West cott would have been elected. In the defeat of Mr. M. H. Martin for county treasurer he is extended the sympathy of many range republicans. His vote is a highly complimentary one in Mesaba precincts, where he run far ahead of his ticket. RECEIVED IllH PATENT. Steinberg yesterday re- M. ceived letters patent on his dredging and mining apparatus, application.for which was duly made on March 19th last. Dur ing his prospecting tour to Mon tana during the past summer, Mr. Steinberg has used the cur rent power and hoisting portion of his invention with great suc cess, the current of the river furnishing power to hoist and pump. The invention complete dredges, hoists ana washes the gravel and separates the gold therefrom. It is the intention of Mr. Steinberg to test his ma chine in the rivers of Idaho another season. The machine is furnished with a steering and propelling apparatus, so as to any democrats still hold office in 1 ,,, be moved up or down stream at his district he will doubtless! allow them to remain, rather than run the risK of jeopardizing republican party interests further. will. WILL BE COMPLETE!* THIS MONTH. Powers & Simpson have open ed an office at Hibbiag in con nection with the logging railroad they are building to a point 33 miles west of that place. G. A. R. Simpson says that the wet weather of the past weeks has delayed the work to a consider able extent, but that they expect to have their railroad finished and steel laid before the first of December. Powers & Simpson will log this winter between 40* 000,000 and 60,000,000 feet BACK 4:t0ai KLONDIKE, J. W. Crockett arrived in the city on Wednesday, from his year's trip to the Alaska gold fields. In conversation with The Enterprise scribe he alleges that the country is a rich one, full of opportunities for hustling, pro gressive men. He has several claims, rich in mineral wealth, and will return in the earlj spring. He will probably re turn to the coast to spend the winter. DIVORCE GRA.STED. Judge Cant heard the suit for divorce brought by Anna Chit tenden against Elmer Chittenden in district court yesterday and granted the decree. The complaint charged adult ery.
