For some weeks past a com mittee of Virginians has had its eye on the county division ques tion, knowing that time would ripen when it would behoove Virginians to hustle. The time is here and upon his return from Duluth Monday t)r. Stuart Bates brought with him the necessary petitions, which have since been circulated in range towns, some 1200 signers being obtained on the Mesaba alone. The following is a copy of the petition, which speaks for itself: To THE SECRETARY OP STATE OP MINNESOTA: We, the undersigned residents and legal voters of the county of St. Louis, Minnesota pray that a new county may be created and be composed of the territory within the following boundaries, towit: Commencing at a point on the west side ot Lake county. Minn* esota, where said west line of Lake county intersects the town ship line between townships fif ty-six (56) aad lifty-seven (57) as shown by the government sur vey of said townships, said line of intersection being the south line of township fifty-seven (57) and the north Jine of township (56) thence west along and on said township line to the point where said line intersects the east line of Itasca county, Minn esota, thence north along and on the east side of said Itasca county to where said line inter sects the boundary line between the state of Minnesota and the Province of Ontario, in the Do minion or tJanMar thence east and easterly along and orr the said boundary line between said state of Minnesota and said Prov. ince of Ontario in the Dominion of Canada following the curva tures, variations and sinuosities of said boundary line to the point of intersection of said boundary line with the west line of said Lake county, Minnesota, thence south along and on the west line of said Lake county to the point of beginning said ter ritory so composing the new county being all that portion of said Saint Louis county, Minne sota, as now constituted and ex isting lying north of the south line of township (57) in said county as fixed and located by the government survey of said township. And that the name of said county be Iron. And that the City of Virginia be the county seat thereof. And that William N. Shepard, of the City of Tower, and Mars cus L. Pay. of the City of Vir ginia, and E. J. Longyear. of the Village of Hibbing, and William T, James, of the City of Ely, and William Garmichael, of the township of Biwabik, be And constitute the first board of county commissioners of said proposed county That said proposed new county of Iron contains more than 400 square miles of terrl tory and has within its proposed territorial limits more than f#o thousand (2000) inhabitants. That the existing county of Saint Louis, after deducting therefrom th6 proposedr county of Iron, will contain mor« than 400 square ttiicto 6t terri* tory, and Will hav£ more than two thousand (2000) inhabitants. The proposition is self-com mendatory to the people of the rauges, as is also the board of county commissioners named. The village of Eveleth is said to have aspirattott* for tfite county seat, but so fa^ as too** no steps have as yet been tfcken looking to that end, and should the petition be favorably acted upon by the state board we shall expect the support of all range people, as we believe they will recognize the fact that county division is of more importance than is the temporary location of the connty seat. The per manent county seat question would come up two years later, and if Eveleth or any other range point could "do us?" right and well. The outcome of the petition is awaited by all, and we trust and believe it will be favorable. a -1. THB UAKOB DICTATOR. Paddy the Plop, in his Eveleth Star, in commenting on the com ing congressional contest, states that if he "had the poorer to send J. Adam Bede to Congress no man could take his place, and continues with the statement that "Page Morris may not be our choice but he will be the choice of the republican congres sional convention," assuring his few and unenlightened readers that if Morris crrries the Duluth delegation he will receive the range support. This, of course, is authorative. It emanates from the great mind of one who, since his purchase by the machine in the fall of '98, has set himself up as the politi cal dictator of the ranges, and to whom is extended the sym» pathetic regret of brotherly feel ing upon the fact that he has been compelled to abandon one of the few minor positions 'of his arrogant political armament and confess thus publicly his in ability to choke J. Adam Bede, a brother renegade democrat, down the throats of the republi can congressional managers. COUNTY TBAClttSHS' MXET1NQ. Arrangements are being .per fected for a meeting of the school teachers and officers of the cpun ty in this city on May 4 and 5. Both range roads have made a rate of one fare for the round trip, and many from outside will be in attendance. Geography will be the topic for the meeting. J. H. Lewis, superintendent of public instruc tion of Minneapolis, will be pres ent. Col. A. A. Harris, of Du luth, will deliver his lecture On "A Waif of the Confederacy* on the evening of the 4th. The( in complete program includes visit ing the Virginia schools Friday afternoon, Col. Harris' lecture Friday evening and an informal reception following. Saturday morning A. V. Jones, of Sparta, will speak on "St. Louis County Geography," J. H. Lewis on "South Africa." There will also be a model lesson in Geography, and lectures upon "Relation of Geography to History" and "Ex cursions in History." Metcalfe's X-Ray.—The Eve leth Star, which could not even think of anyone else for congress than J. Adam Bede a few months ago, has changed its tune since the Garfield Club banquet. P. Ellard doesn't have to go very far to get his mind changed. Query: Does he get the postoflice again in case Pagey is returned to congress? Or is it an out and out cash consideration? President Dowling was in from Eveleth Wednesday. While "we had net the pleasure of a person al interview with the gentleman it has been stated to us that he heartily favors the county divis sion petition which names Vir. ginia as the county seat (if'the proposed now county ot Ir6h. In fact, what other point could he support as the new county capi tal, since his interview withDu luth people yesterday?
