We reserve the right to positively refuse any notice of whatever nature after 8 o'clock p. m. on Thursday. OPEN GAMBLING continues to ex ist in Virginia, despite the state law, the city ordinance and the Min neapolis investigation. THE candidacy of Judge Edson apparently receives the hearty en dorsement of Duluth Republicans, who will work as a united whole for his nomination and election. THE positive refusal of John Lind to accept of the proffered nomina tion for governor left the Demo crats with a forlorn hope, but the vacuum was filled by the nomina tion of L. A. Rosing. IN the proposed line-up of Repub lican candidates for county posi tions the Duluth contingent has apparently figured things to a fine ness) afid the ranges will probably fare equally as well this year as in past elections. Even under the new primary law the politicians have much to say as to whom shall be honored by nominations, but it has been feelingly suggested by many range Republicans that the people still elect. J. ADAM BEDE'S self-framed free trade ptatform, calling for the re moval of the protective tariff from iron ore and lumber, may have been intended by the brilliant aspirant for congressional honors to assist him in his campaign. It may have a salutory effect in quieting Demo cratic opposition, but we scarce be lieve it will meet with Republican approval in the mining and lum bering districts. J. Adam may be able to explain wherein the Demo cratic policy of a tariff for revenue only may benefit the interests of this district, but his explanation must deal in argument instead of that particular brand of humor so generally accredited as his/natural style of defense. THE Ely Miner intimates that the ranges may come in line for a suc cessor to Odin Halden's present po sition as county auditor, and infers that of course the Mesaba will have numerous aspirants. Allay your fears, Peter the Mesaba has but one prospective candidate for a county office—which we do not con sider an undue recognition. That candidate will be Hon. M. C. Palm er, of this city, who considers the proposition of entering the contest for clerk of the court, a position for which he is well qualified. And we naturally feel that the Vermil ion would be entitled, in case he en ters the race, to lend him hearty support. In that case, a Vermilion candidate for the auditorship would doubtless receive due recognition and deserved support in this sec tion. TO CONTRACTORS. Mount Iron, St. Louis Co., Minn. June 23d. 1902.
