IT would appear to the casual ob server that Editor Atkinson, of the Mesaba Ore, is not numbered among the devout admirers of the present county attorney, J. M. Mc Clintock. A funny world this, but it would be more so if all people thought alike. T. ARMSTBAD, whom some re ports say is running for the Repub lican nomination for sheriff, was in the city Friday and Saturday, pre sumably looking over the local field. Mr. Armstead/however, is evidently shy of the newspaper man, passing him up on his rounds. But it is just as well. A scribe has a faculty of knowing men by their reputations therefore W. J.Bates seemingly receives the cordial and undivided support of the range pen pushers. THE city administration of Sioux City, la., take a sensible view of the gamhling proposition and have fixed a scale of prices for the com mission of sin, fixing the monthly fine of a gambling house at $300, poker rooms at $150 and slot ma chines and lesser forms of bucking the tiger at lower rates. The scale is somewhat higher than formerly prevailed on the ranges at a time when gambling was winked at in this section, and would seemipgly leave but little chahce for side (bets on the part of authorities. IT is well to remember that Min nesota is not the smallest pebble on the beach, says the Wedena Tribune. She ranks first in wheat production, first in iron, first in flour proditc tion, third in lumber manufactur ing, fourth in the value -of cereal products, fourth in oats, second in barley, fifth in rye, ninth in pota toes, fifth in dairy products, third in linseed oil manufactures, firstf in health and second in education. In this connection it must also be re membered that the university of Minnesota, in point of attendance, ranks second in the United States THE MESABA ORE again broaches the name of Senator Hawkins as gubernatorial possibility, stating that the fight between Dunn and Collins has "proven to the complete satisfaction of all sincere Republic ans that neither is fit to hold such a high office." Without passing upon the fitness of either of the two candidates, mentioned, it is appar ently a cinch that neither of them can be nominated without the com plete disruption of the party in the state and it is more than likely that when the time for the state conven tion arrive»a dark horse will carry off the honors. In such case the people of the iron ranges and ot the northern portion of the state would be found solidly lined up for Mr. Hawkins, should he permit the use of his name. But They Do It. It is a small man who will use his secret society membership to boost his political aspirations.— Mesaba Ore. Still it is done, and we have known,- in local political affairs, even, where it was attempted. But results prove that brothers of a society are not strung by captivat ing handshakes. I.
