John Gustafson, treasurer of School District No. 45, who resides on the Tower and Itasca road some thirteen miles west of Angora, was in the city on Wednesday, leaving with the Enterprise a notice for publication for bids on a new two room school building in that dis trict. Stein & O'Rourke are among the number of Virginians who are thor oughly convinced that advertising pays. They are kept busy selling residence lots in the Second Addi tion to Virginia, and very properly credit the judicious use of printer's ink with bringing many sales. The Diiluth News Tribune robin must have concluded that he was in error in thinking the good old summer time had struck northern Minnesota, and gone back south. At any rate, while he was reported in Duluth three weeks ago he has failed to show up on the ranges yet. A wise bird. Archie McDougall, well known to many Virginians, local superintendent for the Pickands Mather Co. at their Section 6 mine, has been taken to Rochester, where he will uudergo an operation for appendicitis. Mr. McDougall ia a son-in-law of J. H. Pearce, formerly of the Commodore but now a resi dent of Duluth. Humane Officer Withrow is pre paring the draft of a bill to be sub mitted to the St. Lonis delegation in the legislature, authorizing coun ties to appropriate money for the erection and maintenance of a coun try home for boys. Mrs. Withrow has offered to donate a tract of land near Duluth to be used as a site for the building, the. purpose being to establish a junior republic where delinquent and incorrigible boys may be sent without the odium of a penal institution. Hfereafter applications for transfer of saloon licenses will' not be allowed. M. FAY, Mayor. LIBRARY SITE SELECTED. Board Decides on Site at West End of Chestnut street, Monday Evening. At the meeting of the Virginia Public Library Board on Monday evening that body formally decided by ballot upon the site for the new Carnegie Library, the selection as made being at the: west end of Chestnut street, the idea being to vacate a small portion of the Boule vard, purchasing two lots in block 21 for road purposes, that the build ing may be erected facing the center of Chestnut street. It is understood.that more or less opposition to the selection as made is in evidence, and the statement is made that the vacation of the por tion of the street necessary to the fulfillment of the-present plan may be held up, thus either delaying the plans or rendering the selection of another site imperative. -4 A Promised Treat. The Rev. H. E. Neff, new pastor of the Cleveland Avenue Presbj'terian Church, who was a delegate to the fourth World's Sunday School Con vention a year ago on their trip through the Holy Land, will deliver a course of lectures at the Church on Wednesday and Thursday even ings, March 22 and 23, and on Wed nesday and Thursday evenings March 29 and 30, on his trip. Rev. NefFs addresses will be in connec tion with beautiful stereopticon views taken by himself in his tra vels, and is highly spoken of by the press of Indiana and Ohio, where he has previously delivered his lectures. In speaking of these lectures the Middleton, Ohio, Journal of Octo ber 10th, 1904, says: "Rev. Hen^ E. Neff, of Winona Lake, Ind., a gradu ate of Miami University and who attended the late World's Sunday School Convention at Jerusalem last March, gave three of his fam ous lectures here last week at the Presbyterian Churches to large and delighted audiences. The beauti ful stereopticon views gathered by Prof. Neff in Rome, Egypt, Jeru salem, Constantinople and other in teresting scenes were the best ever seen in the city, while the lectures that accompanied them by the learned and eloquent gentleman were gems in oratory. The closing performance, "The Holy City," will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to see it." Vail Hotel Burned, One Life Lost. The Vail Hotel at Ely was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday, George Byrnes, porter, losing his life in the flames. The fire caught at about 5:30 a. m., supposedly from a defective heating plant, and spread so rapidly that many giiests in the house barely escaped with their lives, a number of them tieing caught on the upper floor of the four story building where they were rescued through the efforts of the firemen. Byrnes, who lost his life in the flames, was in the basement of the building at the time, getting trapped before being able to get out. The hotel was owned by^P. R. Vail, who was absent in the south at the time, but was run under lease by John Glode. It was a popular house, and had a full quota of guests for its hundred rooms at the time of the fire. Johnson was.taken back on Thursday to answer to the charge, -Marshal Greible^ of gaunee, coming after him. Ne- Resolution to Build Sidewalk. Council Chambers, Virginia, Minn., March 7,1905. By Alderman Johnson. Resolved, That the City Council of .the City of Virginia, Minnesota, deems it necessary that a sidewalk be constructed along the north side of Spruce Street, from the east line of Central Avenue to the west line of Cleve land Avenue.' and that the following-material be used and employed in the construction of the same, to-wit: Surfaced plank, two inches thick, from six to eight inches in width and six feetin length stringers to be 4x6 inches, and to lie three in number, one at each edge, and one in the cen ter, and the sidewalk to be built under the di rection of, and to the grade,as established by the street commissioner or engineer of said city. Resolved Further, That the owners of.the land along which such sidewalk is to be built be given notice of this resolution by. the pub lication of the same Once in the official paper of the city, and that all of said owners are hereby notified and required to construct said sidewalk along tlieir respective land, and fully complete the same, within two weeks after the publication of this resolution and further, that in case such owners, or any of them, along the land on which said sidewalk is to be built, shall refuse or neglect to con struct the same of the material and. accord ing to the specifications mentioned in this resolution, then in such case the City Council shall proceed to construct same, and assess' and levy the cost and expense of construct ing such sidewalk against each lot and parcel of land upon which such sidewalkshall front, according to law.
