John C. Hayes, who served with distinction under Gen. Winfleld Scott in the Mexican war, an amusing story is told by T. E. Farish in his "Gold Hunters of California." Hayes. with his command, had been out scouting. On his return he made no report to Gen. Scott, who sent for him. Gen. Scot was a veritable mar tinet in enforcing military discipline. After Hayes was seated in the com mander's headquarters, Scott said: "Col. Hayes, fhave received no report of your expedition against the padre." "I did not think it worth while," said Hayes. "Every officer of the army is required to make a full report of everything to his superior officer. Please make your report verbally." Hayes began by saying that he struck the padre's trail on a certain day, followed it for two days and on the third day, while his command was resting at noon and taking their siesta, the old padre came down on them. The "boys" gathered them selves together and whipped the Mexicans off, killing quite a nuqiber of the padre's command. His own loss was insignificant, one killed and three wounded. "Surprised you, eh?" queried Soott. "Yes we were not ex pecting him." "Where were your pickets?" "Did not have any." "What!" shouted Gen. Scott. "A colonel in the regular army of the United States go into camp in the heart of the enemy's country and never place a picket on guard? What would you do if surprised when asleep?" "Shoot the first man that waked me up," was the cool reply. FINE SCENERY IN FLORIDA. Pleasure and Sport Along theWlckV Watche River. It is about the size and^ shape of a blackbird, but has a pair of de.icate white tufts at its throat, and is a glossy dark green otherwise, which looks black in the sunlight. It can be taugut to crow, to speak, to whistle tunes, and besides these tricks it has a repertoire which is not often equaled by any other feathered songster. At vespers it has a note like the-toll of a bell or the clear high note of an organ. It can mimic every bird in the bush to per fection it will break oH in the middle of an exquisite melody and indulge in a strange medley of sounds which are impossible to describe, hut if you can imagine "the combination of a cough, a laugh, a sneeze, with the smashing of a pane of glass," it will be some approach to the idea. The tui nests twice or thrice a year and has large families. Like-the other birds of New Zealand it seems to be unconscious of danger from man. It is a pity that the birds of this island are becoming so scarce, for they speak to us of a time when nature was harmless, when the snakes, tigers and falcons did not exist.
