Murphy enjoys a visit from her mother, Mrs. C. A. Wilson, and her aunt, Miss E. Johnson, of Gault, Ontaria, Canada, who ar rived ia the city on Saturday last. W.R. Wasson came up from Du luth Sunday and spends the week here, relieving Deputy Clerk of the Court Halloway, who attends the Red Men's Convention at Brsinard. Robert Lindsay makes notable improvements to his Maple street residence property, putting stone foundation under same and re modeling and enlarging the build ing. Louis M. Osborn, who accom panied his mother on a trip to the international boundry cities, Be midji, Brainard and other Minne sota points, returned home Tues day evening. Mrs. J. L. Owens enjoys a visit from Miss Ella Groening and niece, Mias Iaabelle Johnson, of Philadel phia, who made the trip up the lakes, arriving in Duluth on the 27th ult. They will leave for the return trip on Tuesday next. Miss Katie Chynoweth and Miss Mabel James, of Houghton, Mich., arrived in the city Saturday for a visit as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Bonds. Accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Bonds they left Monday for Sand Lake, spending the week at that point. The W. T. Bailey Lumber Co.. which concern is becoming a greater employer of labor than in former years and under its contract with the Oliver Company is run ning its Virginia mill double shift throughout the season, erects a commodious boarding house on the former site of the Shields black smith shop on Walnut street. Some renegade with a woeful lacking of appreciation of the beau tiful in nature, broke down a tree at the corner ot the Lenont Hos pital on Friday evening last, rip ping the half of the top off. Mr. Swan aon runs the company boarding house at the big Canisteo mine, and reports that he is doing very nicely. L. J. Micka, chief itccountant for the Winston A Dear Co. in the Chisholm district, was in the city Tueaday, visiting with H. Hansen, who will superintend the new work by that company on section 90, south of the city. Two shovels will be placed on the work at the outaet, and the company awaita the arrival of same from Montana, where they have been employed in railroad work in the Miasoula district. The initial con tract on aection 90, which embraces what was formerly known as the Gross homestead, ia about 1,300,000 yards, and will mean the employ ment of a large fore* during the seasons oi 1900*10. Folsom, ot Hib bing, has been in the city during the week in attendance at the district court. Mrs. J. H. Crowe enjoys a visit from her sister, Mrs. John Stur geon, of Salem, Ind., who arrived in the city on Friday last. Judge James P. Carey,of the Mun icipal Conrt, made a brief business trip to Duluth Tuesday, returning the following morning. J. G. Crozier and Thos. Matt Bokich and Mary Runovitz were married on Monday at the Polish Catholic Church, the wed ding festivities being attended by many friends. The young couple will make their home in thia city. Miss Meda Madden, for sometime past-an employe of the Mesaba Ore at Hibbing, arrived in the city Sunday and accepts a position as compositor on the Enterprise, en tering upon her nevr duties Mon day. |Harry Shanedling, accompanied by his father. F. Shauedling,depart ed Tuesday for a trip down the lakes to Buffalo, on the ateamer Northwest. The trip is made in the hope that it may be beneficial to the health of Mr. Shanedling, Sr., who suffers from luog trouble. Hans C. Hanson, superintendent of the Winston & Dear stripping operations on Section 30, south of the city, arrived here the last of the week and attends to the opening work on the new contract. Mr. Hanson has purchased the Wasson home on Central avenue, and will make his home here. Deputy Sheriff M. Horgan came up from Duluth Sunday with a number of those indicted by the late grand jury, who appeared before the court to enter their plea the following morning. Most of the indictments returned were againat "blind piggera" although a number of true bills were found against certain ones accused of graver offenses. Miss Karen Larson, of Minneap olis, formerly head secretary ot the Daughters of Norway, waa the guest of honor at a pleasant fare well party given jointly by the Daughters and Sons of Norway in her honor last evening. Mias Lar son has spent the past two weeks in the city as the guest of Mrs. D. A Martinson and Mrs. Andrew Dahl and leaves today for her Minneapo lis home. A. E.
