(luring the early hours was (mite Irregular. The
market opened higher except for Chicago &
Northwestern, Central Pacific, Delaware, Lacka
wanna & Western, Philadelphia & Reading, Chi
cago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha, Texas Pa
cific and Western Union Telegraph, which were
fractionally lower. About 10:15 the entire list
Improved and prices rose K@l7s percent.,
LoniHville & Nashville scoring the greatest ad
vance, selling up to 33%. At the first call prices
Weakened, falling off (4® 4 per cent. Subse
quently an Improvement set, in except for Mis
souri Pacific, which made a further decline to
'.12 %'~. Late in the afternoon there was a sudden
change to buoyancy and activity and the dealings
were attended with excitement, pricos advanced
rapidly %®4 cent, and all leading shares
were takun freely on the way up. The rise was
attributed to buying for foreign account and to
the covering of short contracts. The effort to
shake out Jong stock during the past few days
lias not been successful, and when the market
began to advance this afternoon the bears be
came frightened and made a general attempt to
coyer. The market closed strong. Compared
with last night the closing prices are %(&3%
per cent, higher except for Missouri Pacific,
which is 2 per cent, lower at 93%. Zimmerman
& Porshav ship to-morrow 80,000 trade ' dollars
for China, and . Saturday ship 100,000 Mexican
dollars. .

On 'Change.
St. Paul, July 31 . — The business on 'change
yesterday was 'confined entirely to coarse
grains, feed, hay and eggs. Nothing was done
in wheat which was nominally unchanged. Corn
was down lc; 1 car of No. 3 sold at 47; oats were
a little easier; 2 cars of No. 2 mixed sold at 28c;
1 ear at 29c o. t. ; feed was quiet bntsteady. Hay
was scarce and very firm ; 1 car of wild sold at
at 310.00, and one car of new timothy'at $12.50.;
Eggs declined lc, but 30 cases sold at yesterday^;
