WIXO.SA'S VISIT TO LACROSSE To Hear Carl Sclmrz— An Excursion That Had Its Difficulties. [Special Correspondence of the Globe.l Wixoxa, Sept. 10.— Winona has moved ■lowly along, pursuing the "even tenor of her ways," without a ripple of excitement, for the last two weeks. We have had plenty of ruin, and it has, at times, deluged us. The trains and mails have been belated,, and passengers have been waylaid, still this is no cause for quickening the pulse of the average Winona man. The preliminaries of the recent congres sional i invention did arouse a slight feeling of activity, but everything went .off so smoothly at the convention that even this cooled oil. We expect, however, to give Bierman a clean majority of at least 1.000 votes. The news that Carl Scnurz was to speak at La Crosse, la si Monday evening, was, to a cirlain extent, en electric shock, and the Democrats and Independent-Republicans, which, ... way, are not as scarce an article this year, as usual, bestirred 0 >m sclyes, and concluded to go down and hear the representative of political Independence. By the efforts of Assis».»nt Superintendent San born, of the; western roarl, a special tr.i:?. was placed at the disposal of the Cleve lan ! and Ilcndricks club.andat 6:15 o'clock we ''shut our <*oors igainst the Eettlug sun" arm left for /air La Crosse. Tiie track was clear, and the engineer, ap parently anxious to get us there in time, "let licr g>>, and ■...•■ way v.-< went flying along the track would have been a marvel to old Thos. Jeilc-rsun. Very likely the old Democrat was wishing us "(iuu speed," in our efforts to re establish Jcfferronian govern a.ami wish ing that he could come down or a few min ute= and give v* a few hints. We were ... Democratic crowd that filled those throe coaches, although there was no whisky on board that 1 saw, and as we lia^.od uioDi;, joking and cheering for the ticket, the two unfortunate Republicans, who were going down out of curiosity to see Scuurz. (this does not include the iude- ■ pendentsjlhousrhttliat the tidal wave,or more ' properly the cj clone of Democratic success was upon them. However they were treated kindly an gently and they think now that we were uot such a vulgar mob as they had been led to believe. Very likely, now, they will vote for C'icve-lau 1. We arrivedat Onalaski, twenty-five miles from Winona at 7:15 and were switched oil out* the short Hue a ling into La Crosse. Ti.'e track li .'1 be n washed out two days before, but had been repaired that day and j going slowly, we passed over in safety. I think that in this spot especially the shades of Jefferson guarded us. When we arrived at the depot we found all the'street cars in Lai rosst waiting for us. We boarded them without ceremony and started uyon the horse; they are one horse cars though on a broad guge track. A short distance from the depot the car run oil the track; we grot out and put it back. Not even the awful catastrophe of being de railed couli check our spirits or impede our onward march. We were going to swell the flood sweeping over Wisconsin, and woe to him that undertakes to lam our passage. When we had retched the civilized part of the city we found the sidewalks lined with people, men, women and children rushing madly un toward the seat of war. They hal loaed to us, we responded. The horse balked, we cheered him and he went on. A little further we ran In between two lines of torches, and during the balance of the course we were lighted by Democratic torches and cheered by Democratic voters. On reaching the postoffice we alighted, and forming in line followed the inspiring strains of our own famous Gerruania to the Cameron bouse. Here was to be the point of departure of the numerous clubs that were to take part in the demonstration. The scene was brilliant beyond expression. The streets meeting at that point were tilled with long lines of torches four and six abreast as far almost as the eye could reach. After a few preliminaries, such as furnish ing us with torches and getting us in line of battle, the . tirade commenced. The La< rosse Fifth Ward club led off with one hundred and fifty torches; then we tiled In with two hundred. Afterwards the other clubs fell in, and as the bead of the line passed up over tile hill at the post office over two thousand were in line, each one borne in the bands of a man marching to Demo cratic music, and inspired with Democratic principles. Fireworks of every description were in continual eruption, the night was made like unto day, and the air was bur dened by the music and successive round of cheers. When Carl Schurtz passed along the line in an open carriage, the "tigers" that greeted him were to say the least quite complimentary to him. After marching for a half an hour or so, we gathered to hear the speech. A stand had been erected in the park and seats ar ranged around it. Here were congregated it least eight thousand people, at least there were that many in sight, and they extended way out into^ the darkness, so there might have been twelve thousand present. To describe Schurtz other than to say that he is a tall, slim man, with a sharp face cov ered with brown whiskers and wearing glasses, would occupy too much time and space. Neither can I attempt to give a summary of what be said. This has already been printed. His speech was a forcible, sharp and ex ceedingly plain statement of Mr. Blame's connection with the Little Rock bonds, and other matters in which be had abused the confidence imposed in him by the people. His logic was correct, his arguments were unanswerable, and his eloquence was irre- Etstiblc. His audience were with him and he kept them, (nice only did some one have the temerity to cheer for Blame. Quicker than a flash the speaker turned on him his whole reserved batten-, and from that time until the close no one breathed the name of Blairie, except in score. Mr. Schurtz showed his power and re sources when be "set down" on this IJlaiue adherent, and his audience showed their appreciation by rising and cheering lustily. The meeting was a grand one and did much for Cleveland's cause. The Winona delegation returned much pleased with their trip, and firmer than ever in their conviction that Democracy will win this fall. Crop Reports. Washington, Sept 10. — The product of winter wheat is about the average. It is generally of good quality except where in injured by sprouting in shock. The rate of yield is not far from au average of thirteen bushels per acre. The results of the harvest of spring wheat are not yet complete, and the product cannot be precisely indicated. It 13 probable from reported condition of the crop already harvested that the aggregate will vary little from 500,000,000 bushels. Re ports of much higher figures are sensational « and misleading. The general average con dition when harvested is ninety-eight against eighty-three .a>i year. The condition almost Identical with f. at reported in September. 1879, of the census crop, which yielded thir teen bushels per acre. The wheat states of the hi-rhest condition re California, Wiscon sin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oregon. " These with some ; if minor reductions, show figures higher than the general average. lowa, Nebraska and Kansas standing at 9S, Ohio and Michi gan 9», Indian:; 94. Illinois SO. The eastern and southern states range from SI in Mis souri I < 103 in Maine. The corn crop is in better condition than in any September since ISSI. The general average la 94. It was 94 lost September, S3 in ISS2 and 60 in ISSI. Dairy Day at Chicago. Chicago, Sept. 10. — A system was inau gurated to-day by the Chicago produce ex change, setting apart Wednesday of each v ek for the sale of dairy products. Five hundred persons participated, including a number of creamery manufactures, who brought samples of their products with them j from Minnesota, Wisconsin^ lows and Illi- j nols. Over 1,000 tubs ef creamery butter and 3,000 boxes of cheese were offered.. Butter sold at 22@25c, cheddar cheese 9>^@ 9%c. Had the weather not been so intensely hot the offerings would undoubtedly have been larger. Luncheon was gived in Ex change hall after the close of the sale, and addresses were made by the president, vice president and secretary of the exchange. Letters of regret were read from Grier, Hamilton and others. A MARYLAND TRAGEDY. The Story of John T. Fink and His Licentious Sons. BaXTDCOBE, M. D., Sept 9. — No novel of a Zola bus for its basis events more libertine i in sonic particulars, no story of a Hawthorne | is founded on circumstance more tragic in J other particulars than the death of John T. I Fink, a wealthy inventor ol a patent process j for manufacturing lubricating oils, which I occurred last night. Years ago be amassed > a fortune by shrewd investments in oil, and I when his oldest son, John, became of age , the large and profitable business ol the father : was turned over to the eon. The latter was I a popular and polished person, surrounded j by everything calculated to make life enjoy j able. His basin necessitated his travel- j ing much of the time. Unknown to his 1 family yonnc Fink had formed the acquaint ance of Jessie Ashby, reported to be the i J handsomest demi monde on the Atlantic | coast. She is said to be a descendent of the : | aristocratic family of AshleyVof the Caro ; Unas. . With this woman as a companion | young Fink travelled over the United States j j and more recently through Europe, where they visited together every place worth see ing. Everywhere they appeared they created a decided sensation, she by her great beauty | and costly jewels aud he by his lavish ex penditure of money. Upon their return to j America they spsnt th.: past winter in Den ver, Colorado. Scarcely a fortnight has elapsed since their return to this city. It is only recently that the aged father learned of his son's alliance with the Ashby | ; woman. Greatly shocked, the father and ' i mother undertook to induce their sou togive ; jup the woman. He promised to do so, but j i did not. Persuasion and threats were used, and finally he was offered a large sum of j | money to accede to his parents' request. : ' Hearing that young Fink and Jessie Ashby ; were about to leave the city together on ' Wednesday last, William, a younger brother, | was dispatched to the railroad depot to inter- : cept them. Upon William's arrival at the depot he found Miss Ashby in waiting alone. [ Her charms instantly infatuated him. In ! stead of returning home, William and the ! former companion of his brother took the | first train which came along, which was an express train for Harrlsburg. The younger Fink took with him several hundred dollars, . and it is said Miss Ashby had $3,000 in her j possession, money which had been given her ; from time to time by John Fink. Soon after reaching llarrisburg William j Fink and the Ashby woman were married. • This escapade of their favorite child caused the fond parents great anguish. The elder sou was terribly angered at his brother'<^e-< tion. In his excitement he threatened to kill both his brother and his wife. On Saturday the newly married couple re turned to Baltimore. In the evening word was brought to the father that John Fink and some wild companions had driven a few miles out of the city. Ordering his own car riage, the father and mother drove hurriedly after them, and met them at Halstead's road house, three miles beyond the city limits on the Pimlico road. As the aged couple drew up alongside the house Mrs. Fink thought she saw by the im perfect light of the room the form of her son seated in an open carriage with several fe male companions. Trembling with emotion she said to her husband, "John, there he is." Her words elicited no respone. Surprised at her husband's 6ilence she turned her face to his. It was just in time to witness the last faint gasp, and her ears caught a chok ing sound in his throat. The reins had dropped from his hands, and with a stony glare in his eyes his head sank slowly on her shoulder. An Instant thereafter he was a corpse. The frantic, agonized cries of the wife brought the hotel proprietor and guests to the carriage. Among them was her son. A doctor was summoned, but it was too late. The physician stated that his death resulted from heart disease, superinduced by excite ment. The remains were brought to this city, followed by the grief stricken widow and Bun. Deceased was native of Lancaster, Pa. He was sixty-one years old, and leaves a widow and nine children, all grown. MANITOBA WAVE NEEDED. The Hottest Day of the Year—Sev eral Deaths iv New York from Heat. New York, Sep. 10. — This morning at 9 o'clock the thermometer registered eighty four; at 10 o'clock it was eighty-six; at noon, ninety, and at 1 p. m. ninety-three, the hottest day of the year. No air stirring on the streets, and few ventured out unless compelled. Stage and car horses suffered terribly, a large number being prostrated. No deaths and few prostrations from sun stroke are reported yet to-day, but a large number is probable in to-nights record. The signal officer reports the neat general, j - 3 p. m. — Five fresh cases of sunstroke are just reported at police headquarters. The weather is intensely hot. The street car lines have almost suspended. A num ber of people have been pros trated, but it is almost impossible to learn how many, nine deaths occurred at Bellevue hospital lrom heat. Cleveland, 0., Sept. 10. — Alonzo Much ler, claiming Toledo aj his residence, found his wife this evening In a bagnio on Seneca street, aud threw in her face about an ounce of vitriol, which he evidently procured for j that purpose. It was first thought both her j eyes were destroyed, but the physician now hopes to save them. Her face is badly burned. Muchler was arrested. ~ ! Notice to Creditors. State of Minnesota.
