The crops In ri- an: beginning to come to

in quality than was expected even by tbe

els. Win. .Mutt lias over 100 bushels more
than expected, aud bis wheat has more
agreeably surprised him. Win. Kunsman
and George Steetnan have each a corn patch
of eight or ten acres .which made their heart
rejoice. The product of farms in instances
not a few this year Is larger in value than
the price for which farms could in the spring
have been bought for.. Four miles south of
Heron Lake Mr. Henry Schumacher has a
farm of 320 acres, on which he has fourteen
acres of trees and one of the best houses
and barns in this southwest. We visited it
yesterday, and paid a good deal of attention
to the way things are done here. Twelve
years ago Mr. Schumacker took this a3 home
stead and tree claim, be was not more than
straight in the world, now he has 18 head of
horses, 40 cattle, 16 cows, and everything in
like proportion and out of debt. The thing
which will interest the readers of the Gi.oue
most is the vineyard, it was more of a sur
prise than we < an tell to find Concord grapes
in full and very fine fruit, hundreds of
clusters ripe and lucious on vines three years
<«M. We did know that such results could
be obtained. The vines are on a piece of
ground which giants to the south and on the
east is sheltered a row of plum trees and
north by popular trees of eleven years old.
There are large numbers of men who own
land the conditions of which are just as
favorable for vine culture as Mr. Schumack
cr's, nd he says it is do great trouble and
takes no skill or much time to
grow grapes in great plenty.
We also visited the farm now run by the
Green man boys, live and a half out of town,
in the same direction. They work it for
Benson A: Co.; have 100 bead of cattle and
have milked forty-three cows this summer
and sent the milk to the creamery. The bal
ance sheet will show returns on the year
which will be most pleasing. Great prob
lems lire being solved by such farmers and
it may be that they know it not, but for men

gone to have lived and supported ■ family

may do out here.
