Dell Rapids promises large patronage to any
one who will build a roller skating rink.
The stages 011 the new line from Medora to the
Black Hills leave Mondays, Wednesdays and Fri-
days and make quick trips.
The college at Yankton starts off with sixty
pupils, and the people are not- extravagant in
looking for a very successful future for it.
Gov. John A. Burbank. who was married with
the Quaker ceremony at Richmond, Ind., is
spending his honeymoon at Springfield, Dak.

Jamestown, was ooened to the public onthe Sth.

Dakota Free Press: "People along the line of
the Dakota Ceutrai are kicking like Texas steers
against a monopoly of the coal business which
they claim exists there.
The family that came on from New York on
foot reached Redfield last week in good condi
tion and health. They were about five mounts on
the road and will add" to the population of Da-
kota.
Kimball, one of the most promising towns in
Bevel, recently narrowly escaped a most disast
rous flre, and has since organized a hook and
ladder company. The lack of water, however is
still a serious matter.
l In one of the towns of Aurora county the peo
ple do not mean to be burned out if they can
avoid it, and have posted this notice: "Any per-
son caught setting out or lighting fire in Center
township will be hung from the nearest house."
The Sioux Falls Frees says: "Anybody having
a photograph of any thing in Dakota is invited
"to either donate or loan the same for the purpose
of the exhibit at New Orleaus." The photo-
graphs of some of the people will be no great
attraction abroad.
The Henry Eagle notes one farmer in that vi-
cinity who has raised a crop of peanuts. There
are few things that cannot be grown somewhere
to the territory. The largest and most unprofit-
able crop this season is the crop of politicians.
No failure anywhere is reported.
There is probably no county in Dakota in
which there are so many saloons, or so little
lympaty with the prohibitory movements, as in
C'ass, and yet the candidates nominated by the
Republicans Wednesday are both extreme men
on the temperance question, and have been active
workers in sumptuary efforts. There is naturally
a good deal of dissatisfaction with them, and it
would be easy for the Democrats to effect a com-
bination with bolters and independents and
carry the county. There are some indications
that this may be done.
Several parties have made good things for
themselves by visiting towns ia the Red River
valley and north Dakota and writing them up
for Chicago papers, getting pay in advance from
the Business men. A column in the Times last
Saturday is said by the Fergus Falls papers to
have cost that place §300, and the local papers
.ay it i- full of errors, and the subscribers aro
not at all pleased with their investment. The
regular history of the country and all its move-
ments giveu in the local and .St. Paul papers
v. hiei, circulate In this region i- worth far more
than these special write ups for foreign sheets.
Tins is becoming understood.
Political Talk.
Since his failure to secure his man at Pierre,
Col. Lonnaberry has given up the publication of
his daily for the present. He will, however,
probably commence when the legislature con-
venes.
The friends of Gifford insist that Raymond of-
fered all the patronage of tho federal govern-
ment, and that bis intimate friends were not at
all dainty on the money question. The attempt
to place him upon a pedestal above the Dakota
Standard of political virtue is not regarded as a
success by those behind the curtains.
r The Plankinton /■',--. Pre Is not altogether
pleased with the political course of Dakota's
eloquent aud handsome female lawyer: Cynthia
Eloise Cleveland, the Dakota howler, is stump-
ing the state of Indiana in behalf of the Demo
cratic party. Cynthia has undoubtedly experi
enced a change of heart since leaving the terri
tory.
Tin- Comet at Sykesta, in Wells county, a rank
Raymond organ, contributes suggestions and in-
timations like this to the harmony of the party:
Delegate Raymond would not soil his manhood,
sacrifice his honor, belittle himself at Pierre, and
to tins does he owe his defeat. Had he let _-..
self-esteem as he was asked to do, and advance
money for votes, he would have been renomi-
nated
Tliere is growing dissatisfaction with tho leg-
'I bere is growing dissatisfaction with the leg-
islative ticket for the district nominated onthe
Slh. l.a Moure and Sargent were denied a rep-
resentative, and can be combined solid for an in-
dependent ticket judiciously constructed. The
Cass part of the ticket is especially weak. With
Col. W. C. Plummer from l.a Monro and J. M.
Tuohy from Sargent, and strong men from the
other counties, it is behoved the entire ticket
can be laid out.
The Democrats have put up this strong ticket
in Aurora county, and expect to elect most It:

Treasurer John llanten.
Sheriff— T. C. Kennelly.
Supt of schools— John L. Fitzpatrick.
CUrk— J. w. Stelnfeldt
Judge— E, D. Norton.
Surveyor Geo. ETarcsworth.
Coroner A. C. Thompson.
There Is not entire harmony between the
special friends of Capt. Raymond and the parties
who he claimed defrauded him out of the nomi-
nation to which he was entitled as he insists.
But Judge Gifford'. home organ, the Canton
Newt, talks spaa It can afford when it baa the
ither fellows down and they can't help them-
selves, and tells them to put down the crow- ami
stop their ugly faces. This Is one sample: "It
sometimes happens that a dose of thei. own mcd-
icine makes some people have very wry faces.
'I he Fargo Republican* face la all puckered ami
one is led to believe its editor has been rating
green persimmons. The Republican forgets that
the good John l". Raymond's nomination, two
years since, was secured by method* thai wonld
make au honest man blush, and, whether inno-
cent or guilty of being a party to tho dishonest
methods by which be was Dominated, he had ab
solutely BO Claim whatever upon the suf
frages of the people who had been
outraged by hi- nomination. In the
south we supported Raymond rather than split
the party. Now. when Judge ("Ifford has been
selected to succeed Mr. Raymond, the Republi-
cans and all others should give him that cordial
support which is due to a man who has been
fairly and honestly nominated. We will guaran-
tee that Judge Gifford wilt not need the whole
of his term to gel acquainted with his associates,
and wa believe the litpubtican will bo happily
disappointed in regard to the value of his ser-
vices "during the Bret half of his term."
lt will not be surprising if on the ballot of the
Raymond men north tlitlord will be generally
spelled Wilson.
Valley City Churche*.
The factions at Valley City even extend into
the churches, ln consequence Rev. Mr. Peahe
recently lett the Episcopal church there, and the
Jamestown Alert notes this: The Episcopal
church at Valley City does not seem to be in the
most pleasant condition, it seems from the
Barnes couuty ßecord that tbe pastor. Rev. S.
11. Woodford, bas an aversion to Mr. Root of the
congregation. After reviewing the general situ-
ation, the lUcord says: On last Sunday when this
nervous condition of the preacher was aug
mented by "-physical Illness" to an un-
usual degree. Miss Clara Root was seized
with a fit of coughing during th.- sermou. which,
being unable to suppress, she procured -a.> keys
of the house from Mr. Root and went home. This
action of Bies Root the nervous preacher at once
construed into a "studied annoyance," and
subsequently when Mr. Root opened bis prayer
book, which rested upon his knees, the excited
preacher stopped »bort in bis sermon, dumi«sed
the congregation abruptly, stating that he could
no longer endure tha presence of the Root family
in church, and until they ceased their attendance-
there would be no more services ia that church.
Comment i* unnecessary, but from what we know
or Mr. Root we venture to predict that it will be
a long time before the church b opened if Mr.
Woodford's threat is carried out.

It Is immensely gratifying to the people of
Bismarck to have visitors -.cover that the loca
tion is suggestive ,f Wa-h;aton city, with the
Missouri for the Potomac and similar views in
the distance. Editor Warccx-h, of the James-
town ___..rt, recently visited the place, and say*:
The site of Bismarck is a beautiful one. on the
tenth or sunny side of a graceful slope, affording

tance appearing to be three or four miles, but

navigable river in the world, while far out to the
east may be seen the most beautiful farming
country on the continent, in counties or thou-
sands of acres. West and south' of the city can
be seen several thousand acres of heavy timber
in a body along the river, and live miles to the
southwest Fort Abraham Lincoln, 011 the oppo
site bluff of the river, looms up to the view.
Sargent County Corn. . '. ' '',x
The Milnor Teller says of corn-raising in Sar- . j
gent county in the north: Charles Finch, and- j
Green Taylor, Jr., young farmers, called at this -.
office, bringing a bunch of corn, of the improved
flint variety, the seed of which was shipped from '
Canada.' Mr. Finch says he raised ten acres of j
corn this year, which will yield more than one j
I hundred bushels of ears to the acre. There is
no question but .that North Dakota can grow as I
good corn as Illinois or lowa, providing suitable
soil is found, and Sargent and Day counties set-in
;to be especially adapted to corn-growing, Ti:e
I ears Mr. Finch showed us measured from ten j
I and a half inches to thirteen in length. It will :
I not be long until the farmers generally raise I
corn and hogs, and then the low prices of wheat
will not be such a bugbear in the way of pros- j
! perity. * _
Completed and Paid For. _od___
Completed and I'aid For.
There is mutual admiration now between the
Gifford leaders in tim south and the Bismarck i
people. The Canton News at the home or Gifford
says :
We have it on the best of authority that the
new capital building at Bismarck will be en-
1 tirely completed within a week and ready for
i occupancy, and what is of great interest to the
tax-payers, all paid for. The building is heated j
with steam and lighted with gas, the gas appa- !
ratus costing $1,500. This will be a perfect par- '
adise compared with the cramped and uncomfort
able quarters the legislature has hitherto been
compelled to occupy.
Cheap Wheat and Dear Flour.
John Russell, of Valley City, who has just j
been to Minneapolis for additional machinery for !
his mill, says to the Times: Touching the pop- j
ular complaint, relative to cheap wheat and dear i
flour, Mr. Russell states that at Minneapolis, and
in fact all over the country, the mills are making
a good margin of profit this year, while, in his
Opinion, they lost money last year. That is the j
current opinion with the farmers, that millers !
are trying to make up for last year's losses. In |
view of the low prices, the farmers do not take !
kindly to the plan. They are quite positive ia I
the opinion that the margins should be squeezed
down small, to help tbem out.
WASECA.
[Special Correspondence to the Globe.]
Waseca, Oct. 8. — Fire! fire! These ominous
words rang out with startling distinctness on the j
ears of our citizens this forenoon at about 11 j
o'clock. A hnrried gathering; the whistles i
from the locomotives, and the alarm from the j
fire bell called everybody to the scene. The |
alarm proved to be too true ; a fire was in active i
progress, the new brick block Of Mr. Win. i
Herbet was on fire. The persons at work on the
roof had ouilt afire for the purpose of putting I
on the pitch, and the kettle turning over, set
the roof on tire, causing the smoke to roll up in i
volumes, and it looked as if the destruction of
the whole block was certain. Hook and ladder
No. 1 was on hand as usual, and the efficient
foreman, Ed. Telengbergc, was the first to
mount the building. Engine No. 1 failed to
squirt. Mr. Walker, traveling agent for
Anthony Kelly, of Minneapolis, did valuable
service in putting out what at one time look-id to
be a most disastrous conflagration, and the
thanks of ourcitizeds are gratefully extended to
him for his valuable services. The boys of the
hook apd ladder company cannot be too highly
commended for their prompt and valuable ser-
vices.

The Mexican Veterans.
St. LOUIS, Oct. 9. The Mexican veterans as
sembled for tbe second day of their reunion at
Druid's hull this morning. About 250 wera
present. Vice-President Masou again presided.
After the roll call a translation of the following
letter from Gen. Diaz, of Mexico, furnished
through J. F. Cahill, Mexican consul, was read:
(Try or Mexico, Sept. 11. — To John I*. Cahill:
With your favor of the Bth inst., I received an
Invitation which the veterans of the war of
1840-7 of your country sent to those of our
army. I placed it at once in the hands of the
president of the republic, who, I do not doubt,
will see that it is attended to M it should be, by
dictating proper arrangements for that purpose.

Also the following telegram:

Mexico, St. Louis: It is not possible for Mcxl

write by mail. Xaruanoo,

Congratulatory telegrams were then read from
organizations of veterans in San Francisco and
New York.

Im>i vxm'oi.is, Oct. 9. — W. W. CottreU, the
mining ex-auditor of Henry county, whose dis
appearance coincided with a discovery ofa short
age of $4,500 in his school fund accounts Live
rise to unpleasant reports, has been heard from.
He left ludianapolls for Dakota to visit a brother
In-law, Dr. Burr, formerly of Anderson, this
state, to get money to settle. The letter mis
carried on the route and was not delivered until
yesterday. CottreU says he will be on hand to
meet thu commissioners and liquidate his liabil-
ties.

Reserve Town-, Oct. '.'.— the report of the
proceedings of the session of the board of county
\ commissioners on Tuesday last, was an error in
the matter ot (a Bad Diamond.) The commu
nication sent by the board of supervisors of the
town of Ke serve did not state that the men
tioned house was run by Diamond at that timo ;
it stated that the house was run by a man by the
name of Cook.
Mr. Diamond, on hearing of the communica
tion, going into the board promptly put Mr
Cook out of said house with hi* whole fang and
took possession of said house, and i- mnnlng
said house himself now, apparently in good order.
