The water is getting down again pretty far,
and is nearly down to its usual water level.
W. S. Conrad, our live tobacco man, Is off on
another trip to the great west to see how the
business men are getting on.'
We regret to learn that Mrs. Aid. McComb is
suffering from Brights disease, and it Ls hoped
she will be able to be up again soon.
A number of the cells in the new part of the
prison has had to be prepared for the very large
number of border? coming to WardenJteed.
We are pleased to know that Agent Yarnall, of
the Duluth road, is getting rapidly better, and
expects to be able to be at work again in a few
days.
Mr. S. R. Stimson was much easier again yes
terday. The physicians hardly know what to
make of his case, as so far he has been an
enigma to them.
Grain came in quite plentifully yesterday, and
we wish we could chronicle an increase in the
price paid for wheat, but it is altogether too low
to pay the farmer for his outlay.
The subject of Dr. Dunn's lecture this even
ing at the .Methodist church is "Noah's Faith,"
and the subject of Dr. Carroll's lecture at the
First Presbyterian church, is on the "Piigram's
Progress."
Samuel Judd was In the city yesterday, as a
witness before the grand jury in the case of the
state of Minnesota vs, St. Clair and .Mrs. Walker
for tho burning of bis residence at Marine. Mrs.
St. Clair was also in the city.
Joe Muller feels proud of the new furniture
wagon made by Wm. Muller for Ph. Muller & Son.
For delivering furniture it is the beet, by all
odd. of any in the city, and the finish and up—
bolstering on it if just the thing.
Large audiences are every week greeting
the Rev. Dr. Dunn at the Methodist
Church of this city. The interest is growing.
The social meetings are well attended, and the
general outlook for the year excellent.
Yesterday morning it was reported in the city !
that a robbery bad been committed tbe previous I
evening at tbe boarding, house on Isaac Staple's
Maple Island farm. Something over $30 in
cash was taken besides several other articles.
At the municipal court yesterday morning, a
case of suspended sentence was enforced on one
of the South hill young roughs, and they may
rest assured that Judge Nctheway will give them
the full benefit of the law. A case of assault
and battery added $7.50 to the city funds.
Yesterday the Nelson Lumber company paid
off all their men for^he summer's work, having
shot down tbe mill here on Saturday evening.
Many of their present employe? will goto their
lumber shanties, as it is the motto of tbc Nelsou
Lumber company to give their old bunds the
preference.
John Foster, who has been out farming all
summer in Big Stone county, has jest returned
to the city. He reports that grain was not as
heavy this year as last, and prices were still less
in proportion. Farming agrees with him first
rate, and he likes the outdoor exercises that can
be gotten on a farm.
W. J. Stein, jeweler, returned yesterday af
ternoon from bis month's trip in New York state
and other portions of the east. lie looks ragged.
He took advantage of his trip to make a choice
selection of goods for the holidays from the east
ern market, thus combining business with pleas
ure. His daughter returned with him.
Yesterday afternoon a party of hunters left on
the 1 :li'o p. m. train on the Milwaukee road to
Wabashaw, where they will board the steamer
Pens Wright, and come up the lake with her,
where they expect to have a grand goose hunt,
arriving home this morning well laden with
spoils. The gentlemen comprising the party
are D. 11. Uersey, J. C. Nctbcway.Matt Shortall,
Fred McKusick, -Matt Clark, David Staples, W.
C. Ma&terman, Thos. Cbaaor, .las. Bromley, R.
S. Davit, Geo. M. Brush, Leonard Clark, A. C.
Hospcs, E. L. Ilospes and Jos. Becker. A few
others were expected to go, but owing to the
opening of > the 'November term of the district
court, were unable to take the time. Well, they
are a jolly lot. and can enjoy themselves as well
as the same number can from any city. They
went well supplied for all emergencies, and bad
plenty of shot in the locker. We wish them all
success.

DISTRICT COUUT — NOVEMBER TERM.
[Before Judge McClucr.]
Yesterday morning the November term of tbe
district court was opened at the courthouse,
Judge McCluer presiding. The following grand
jury answered to their names:

The judge addressed, intimating there that
their duties would be very lii:ht. as the calendar
contains but few cases, and only one of these
was of any considerable importance. He in
structed them in their duties, and said that the
county attorney would give them all needed in
formation.
The calendar was primarly gone over, and con
siderable discussion was had on several of the
cases. Amoug the legal fraternity of the city
we observed the following: Thompson & Man
waring, Comfort, Marsh, Lee, Scarlets, Gregory,
Swing, Jack, Clapp & Macartney, J. N. & J. W.
Castle ;from St. Paul Horn, Sharzewood, Wilde,
Dawßon, Mullen, and from Marine wag Gco. S,a
bin, while Minneapolis was represented in the
person of A. D. Secombe.
1 The grand jury organized at once by
electing Capt. R. J. Wheeler as foreman, and the
county attorney, J. W. Castle, having the cases
prepared, they bad several things before them.
The case of Murlaugh vs.. Lyons was laid over
until to-day, and will be tried by a jury.
The case of the Market National bank of Bos
ton vs. The Union Depot Street Hallway & Trans
fer company of Stillwater; F. Marsh for the de
fendants, filed an answer in the case and raised
objections. He was answered by Mr. Secombe
for the plaintiffs.
The court then adjourned.
PKOBATE COURT.
[Before Judge Lehmicke.]
In the case of the estate of Wm. T. Donahue,
the report of the sale of real estate was filed and
confirmed.
In the estate of Charles 11. Sanders, deceased,
administration was granted to Andrew Olson.
In the estate of John Folstrom, deceased, the
. petition for letters of administration were filed
by Margaret Folstrom. To be heard December
15,1884.
A Bad Wreck.
Newbukg, X. J., Nov. — At 4 o'clock this
morning a heavy emigrant train going west on
the West Shore broke in two and stopped at
Cornwall station. Owing to the train men neg
lecting to send back a danger signal a heavy
freight train following ran into the passenger train
. completely wrecking most of the passenger cars.
The engine of the freight train was overturned
Inlo the ditch, with several freight cars. The
down track was not obstructed. No lives were
lost. . Emigrants saw the danger and hastened
But of the cars.
£ A Policeman Shot.
Augusta, Me., Nov. 11. — At 8 o'clock this
morning, Harry Burns fatally shot Rufus Lish
ness, a policeman of this city. Burns lived in a
tenement called "the old fort" on the east side
of the river. A disturbance arose there, and
LishnesH and another officer went there to arrest
Burns. Not being able to gain entrance at the
door, Lishneea shoved up a window and . was
about to climb in, when Burns fired, the bullet
penetrating bis bead,
