confirms tli:- suspicion. Tbe cuubc it two fold:
the bright, mild and ulnvi-t t-uinmer weather, ,
and that alluded to at the beginning of this re
view.
The lull In business seems to have nCtcted.
with one or two exceptions, - i very branch of
trade, even grocety houree, which, up to new, !
seemed to be independent of surrounding clr- j
cutnttauces, have »ecn, at last, one week of dull- j
ness; business with these hitherto busy hives of J
commerce has '<( ii extremeiy quiet' during the '
week. The market generally is steady but there
will be found iuu:iy changes in the prices car- j
rent all in favor of the purchaser. Cofle< * are |
firm witn an upward tendency: teas art steady i
and qniet: rUgar* arc about steady but can !
hardly baoaAaa' firm: domestic dried fruits, in- j
eluding apples, are weak aud lower: canned
i fruit* are steady .li-li are weak.especially patted i
herrings which are marked considerably lower:
Trie leather market continues very linn
and steady, tu<t demand for both
sole ami uppers has slightly i,,.
i creased, and buemers during the week in all |
boot, shoe and burije>-n makers' supplies has
been little better. Trade, however, ha* not
been particularly rttshiug. The improvement
mentioned last week in connection with lim-h -.1
iron and steel goods continued during tbe week
uniicr review, «iid to some little exleut increased.
The demand dm in;; the past two day* for smith's
goods would Urn ■ indicate quite a lively revival
of eiiMih s work Uiiougboutthe noUhwei-t;prires
are unchanged. General hardware i- quiet and
steady, with a good, healthy business
especially in shelr goods; a little more enquiry
has been made for sloven with.v the last day or
two. The only changes In prices current are in
nails, which arc marked down a.-am be. During
the past week dry goods have oeen very dull;
business in fact for the first part of tbe wick
was uinior-t at a standstill. Ihe warm un.-e.ieou
able weather and tbe glorious uncertainty of the
political outcome were tulli ient to paralyze all
trade. Monday brought colder weatht-r, and
Tuei-duy showed even still more rigs* of winter
coming in right good earnest, and the conse- '<
quence was a general looking up of business. City !
retailers have been filling their lines and sorting
up generally and one lain jobbing aaaaa has
hud more city bnyers in during the past ten day*
than they have had all the »ca»on. all nould
indicate that if the weather were to turn severely <
cold the dry quods baatoaai would greatly im
prove. The same remarks apply to | munufac
tured fur?, which have been very quiet and <".ull.
Notions, iaces, white goods and fuafy holiday
goods have brcn extremely quiet. There are
no changes of Importance to noii<-e in dry goods
and notions price lists. Hoots and shoes have
fii'i»iia slightly increased activity in « inter
goods, but business is not all it would be if winter ;
weather' were to set i.i. Drugs are quiet I
and steady with but two exceptions, i
iodine (and all it* prepnrations) and quicksilver,
which are strong and higher. Fancy toilet art!
clcs are clow, and in fact holiday goods of every i
kind— in dry goods, stationery, porcelain, per
fumery, etc., move oS but very slowly. There
has been, and it appears as though there will be,
no demand lor holiday good- equal to what there
has been in former m. Lumber remains very
quiet for the reasons mentioned in these columns
a week ago. Now that the whole excite
ment and the vexed unrertainty
of the election have terminated i
merchants are looking forward for at lean two ,
or tbree good nveks ■>( • aataaM before the holi
days, aad .-houid the p'e-ent weather iast they !
.are not likely t.i be disappointed. The follow,
log prices current have ocea revised ana care

I RAILWAY MAIL SERVICE.
I Annual Report of the Superintendent
■ * Showing Increased Facilities and
■ the. Cost Thereof.
■ WAsniKOTox, Nov. 18.— B. Thompson'
■ general BupcrinUndentof the railway mail
■ service, baa subultted his annual report. It
■ appears that on June 30, 1884, there wero
■ 117,160 milts of railroad upon which mails
■ were carried, as compared with seventy- eight
■ miles in 1834. During the last fiscal year
■ the increase was G,952 miles. The number
■of railway postofflce lines In operation Juno
■ 30, 1854. was 845; annual miles of service
■ 93,640,099. Increase in number of pieces of
I mail matter handled during the fiscal year
1533.144*220. Percentage of increase oyer
I 1833 was 13.52 percentage. The increase in
I the number of pieces of registered matter
I handled was 4.93. The increase in the last
■ year of railroad postolllce service, including
I new service placed upon old lines, is 7,641
I miles.
I The number of casualties during the year
■ was 154, in which seven . postal clerks were
■ killed, twenty-eight seriously injured and
■ sixty slightly injured.
I It rucoramends that the postmaster gen-
I eral be authorized to pay the widow or minor
children of all clerks killed in service a sum
equal to one year's salary of the grade to
which the clerk belonged at the time of his
death.
The appropriation for the seryic«
for the ' present year is $4,300,000.
It is estimated that this should be increased
1301,000 for the next fiscal year, which would
make the appropriation $4,601,000. This la
an increase of seven per cent. An addl
tioual appropriation of $51,300 is recom
mended for the purpose of increasing the
salaries os clerks of class live and four to
$1,400 ami $1,200 per annum, respectively.
The appropriation for postal cars for the
present fiscal year is $1,625,000. Recom
mendation is made that the appropriation
for the next fiscal year be $1,875,000. Thii
will include the amount paid to subsidize
roads which has not heretofore been included
In the eslimate for this branch of the serv
ice.
During the year the fast mail service hai
been greatly improved, without any increase
in cost to the department It seems prababl*
the postmaster general will soon be abla
to have the fast mail arrive in Omaha much
earlier than it now does, and have a special
carrier delivery in that city and at Council
Bluffs Immediately on the arrival and before
the close of the business day.
It also hoped that, the malls can be expe
dited so as to arrive in San Francisco about
7 a. m. instead of 11:10 a. m., as at present.
The city mall can be delivered immediately
upon arrival In time to get replies for the east
bound mall the same day, which will b<
equal to saving one day between New Yorlr
and San Francisco. The separation for city
delivery in Saa Francisco is now made or
the cars.

To /.ire on Bran.
Dr. Tanner, the faster. Is living on vegefr
ablea alone now. He said human beings ea'
00 much. It Is the main cause of theii
troubles.
"What do you suggest as a remedy?"
. "Bran, sir, bran."
"What?"
"Good fresh bran."
Here the Doctor's eyes rolled upwajd an 4
his mouth watered at the idea of the humaa
race luxuriating on bran and water. ' Hi
smacked his lips over the fascinating pro*
pect.
"When the grasshopper plague caused i
famine in the west, Gov. Vilsbury sent t
gentleman to distribute a relief fund among
the sufferers. "He found the majority ol
them living on bran and perfectly health}
and happy."
