Summer is over. The trees up river ftnd fringing the borders of the lakes have within the last two weeks assumed the lovely tinted hues of autumn. The winds that blow have in them a sus- picion of the winter near at hand, and the starlight strolls with other people's sisters, the yachting, the white flannels and sashes, and the risque bathing cos tumes are the memories of a past, and the longed-for of a future season. Overcoats have been comfortable ad juncts to existence on most days of the week now past. Furs are considered none too heavy by the pretty girls who a couple of weeks ago were romping over the sands on seashore or lakeside in the most airy of summer costumes, and the most utter disregard for the pulmonary possibilities suggested by the cold nights succeeding days that were almost sultry. fiS§ =■ * * Most people are in town now, and there is a movement in society affairs characteristic of St. Paul in September. The record of the week shows that there have been more events of a social char acter during that period than for the entire preceding three. Surprise parties are in the majority. Weddings are a good average, and engagements to marry are heard of everywhere. Tea parties, euchre parties, dances and soirees are as popular as ever, and the season may be said to have opened favorably. The social craft has been launched under new poles, and is making its annual trip villi the wind right astern. A Dickens of a Social. ' On Oct 1 the McKinley bill, fixing an increased tariff on all imported goods of whatev er nature, will in all proba bility become a law. In that event the prices on imported Cloth and Plush Cloaks, Jack ets, Mantles, Wraps, etc., and all other lines of imported dry goods, will be advanced accordingly. Apprehending the probability of . the passage of the bill this session, our orders for foreign goods re quired for the fall and winter sea sou of 1890-91 were placed so as to insure their delivery before the new law could take; effect. As all our foreign purchases will be with drawn from the customs before Oct. 1, we shall mark and sell the goods on the basis of existing duties, regardless of the final action of the government. Our patrons owe it to themselves to take advantage of present prices, as they cannot be maintained when stocks require to be replenished later in the season. ________ ™™™« ~ ~S3~ _ asm _no_a_a 11 __ __— _ ,___ Still In the Lead.
