WHEN THE BIRDS DIE. O, sad will be the buttercups And balsams white and pied, And sad will be the wood and plain When the birds will all have aied. The comely roses' purple cheeks With grieving will grow nale. So sad will be the summer night Without the nightingale. . No swallow building 'nealh the eaves, No robin in the tree, "No cuckoo, thrush, or oriole, Or painted eohbri — No halcyon brooding o'er the wave, No white dove on the wing,* Nor red flamingoes strutting through The gardens of the king be dawn will come as still as death, With ne'er a single lark, And, joy. ess as one stricken dumb, The day will turn to dark. And we shall clasp our hands and cry: "Ah. God! Ah. how 1 long « For one sweet-throated bird to sing Even a foolish song." —Rudyard Kipling. Necktie Party. B-Plfiff Gabrielle Bompard's face is remarka ble for its refinement. The front face has the outline of a viper's, and seems a great deal shorter than the profile. It is also flat. ; But the eyes, when a hard - expression of which, perhaps, Eyraud's presence was the cause, did not steal over . them, were in regard to shape, color,' freshness, lashes and sculptural lids. It was very curious to watch the hardening of the face as Eyraud was do ing his best to make her out his tempt ress and the inventress of the crime for which they are both on trial. — The Wise Little City Girl.
