Brokers for Leiter helped to make thills lively by bidding for July. MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 19— Our local wheat market opened higher this miming and ruled steady and strong up to mid-scss.on. The volume of trading was not as large as com pared with previous days of the week, but the tone of the market was. of anything, more healthy. The news of the day from the outside world was not particularly encourag ing. About 1C:50 a. m. the market became very strong and active, scoring 2 cents advance by 11 o'clock. This sudden spurt of strength was due largely to disquieting rumors from London. The Chicago market was very wild. Our markets followed at a safe distance, ad vancing sharply from 97% cto 99c. a drop to 9So and all the excitement was over. After this the market ruled steady and strong up to the close. May wheat opened at 9"',ic, against 96% c yesterday, declined to 97c, advanced to 97"4 @97% c, lost l-16c, advanced gradually to 97% c. then leaped to 99c, dropped as quickly to 97%e, gained %c, lost *4c, firmed up to 9S' 4 c. lest %c, gained %c, lost %c by 11:20 and flnallv closed at 98 c. THE ST. PAUI* GLOBE SUNDAY FEBRUARY 20, 1898. ln London in a number of cases before the opening here, and as a consequence selling orders were placed for London account at the opening. There was no local support for prices. On the contrary there was a redemption of liqui dation and the bears were encouraged to raid the market. Prices quickly fell, not only to tho London parity, but below IL The declines ranging up to 3 points and over, in vited covering by the short, and prices hard ened, but at no time did they fully recover to yesterday's close. The weakness apparent in Sugar made it the center of a fierce raid ln the final dealings, and lt sank to $1.28%. the whole list selling off to the lowest. There was very determined support for Sugar at below |l_J9, and the closing of the market saw a battle royal in progress between the bulla and bears, and the market conse quently in a very unsettled condition. Rallies of over a point were made by a number cf stocks besides Sugar, but net losses were left on an average of over a poinL London selling was a feature of the day, and the supply cf St. Paul from that source was sufficient to meet a large demand here and keep the price down. The rate war in prospect between the Canadian Pacific and the Transcontinental lines in the United States for Klondike traffic was a large fac tor, causing a decline of 3 points in Cana dian Paciflc and of less amounts ln the other roads affected. Union Paciflc fours were very heavily dealt In. two individual transactions of a par value of $250,000 and $150,000 respectively being re corded.
