6 OH 10 NI Iff LINES IN MNINESOTA CONSIDER • POSSIBLE ACTION IN RIILA- \ . / Tl«>.\ TO SCHEDULES PREPARED BY COMMISSION Roads Are All Dissatisfied, and There Will Certainly Be a Vigorous Defense In terposed. Legal representatives of the local ro&di interested In the • controversy over mer chandise rates held a secret session yes terday in the office of General Counsel Bunn, of the Northern Pacific. The meeting had for its object the considera tion of the schedule of rates recently sub mitted to the various lines of the stata by the railroad commission. At the meeting M. D. Grover represent ed the Great Northern, A. E. Clark the Minneapolis & St. Louis, C. W. Bunn the Northern Pacific, Frank B. Kellogg the Great Western, L. W. Bowers the North-Western and Judge Thomas Wil son the Omaha. As a matter of fact the schedule now pending before the roads shows extensive reductions in rates over the entire state and the dissatisfaction which tho ii;W tariff created among railroad circles is In keeping with the extent of tho de creased prices. In many cases, it la urged, the reduction has been as gTeat as 20 per cent. It Is believed that at the meeting -ea terday an opportunity was afforded the lines moat Interested of deciding upon some definite course to pursue at tire proposed conference with the railroad and warehouse commission Sept. 4. What ever action was determined upon is not precisely known outside of the legal de- f partments and other official departments j Of the roads, but .it can be relied upon ] that the present schedule, which the commission submitted, will be antag onized. TRAIN REVENUE STATISTICS. Interstate Commerce Commission Fixes Rules for Compilation. Some of the figures that are presented In the recent annual report of the Lake Shore & NiiUle Plate and the Michigan Central nflcrd an excellent lllustiation In the desirability oi the uniformity in the compilation of ton mileage and tram mileage statistics. Unless some other basis of computation shall be adopted officially as more scien tiiic (and good authorities state that at present there seems to be no prospect of this), general adherence to the definitions of train mileage and to the t^hod of computing the same prescribed by the Association of American Railway Ac counting officers would, says a standard authority, seem to be eminently desir able. Train loads would then be train loads everywhere, whether of revenue freight or total freight. The rules -just referred to, the design of which is to promote uniformity direct, as "no doubt even those accounting offices that have given no heed to them are aware that th« average number of tons hauled per train shall be computed by dividing the number of tons hauled one mile by the Bum of the mileage of revenue -mixed trains and the mileage of revenue freight trains, all helping and light engine mile ege being excluded from the statements of train mileage. These rules have been approved by the interstate commerce commission, and are to be promulgated by authority of that board. . . RAPID TRANSIT EARNINGS. Three Million* Promised for the Current Year.
