EARNINGS ARE LARGE NORTHER?- .PACIFIC ; AND SOO ROADS DID WELL "LAST : J ■" " YEAR _ THEIR REPORTS ARE FILED Increased Revenue to State Over 1000 Amounts to Over i".73,000 —General Railway News. -The railway commission yesterday gave out the gross earnings and" taxes for the Northern Pacific and Soo roads for the year 1900 and 1901. Both roads show a comfortable increase in business, the Northern Pacific having done over $7,000,000 more business in 1901 than in 1900. While the general business ol the Soo is not so large as that of the Northern Pacific, the earnings show an Increase that is just as large in propor tion. The earnings and taxes of the roads are as follows: Northern Pacific— Earnings. Taxes. 3901 .... , $10,065,887.08 $301,616.61 1900 .; 7,953,563.20 238,606.90 Increase 2,100,323.78 63,009.71 Soo Line— 1901 $1,813,426.79 $54,402.80 1900 ...... i 1,455,218.33 43,656.54 Increase 378,108.46 10,746. ANOTHER GAR SHORTAGE HEAVY SHIPMENTS OF POTATOES WILL COMPLICATE SITUATION. The next month will see an increase in the car shortage of the Northwest. The cars for general merchandise are becom ing more plentiful, but the fact that there will be a big movement in. potatoes for the next thirty days will make quite a shortage of refrigerator cars. The Minnesota potato Is In universal demand throughout the South and South west for seed purposes. The planters in that section are unable to keep the pota toes raised there for seed, and years of experiments have resulted in the choice of the Minnesota potato for seed. In past seasons the demand for cars has been so great that ordinary box cars were used, being lined, and in many in stances having stoves set up in them and a man sent along to keep the tubers from freezing. The movement this year has not as yet been heavy enough to demand such a step, but, with the car shortage as general as it is at present, it is not unlikely that even more radical measures than this may be adopted. A local freight official said yesterday that he did not understand the action of the Santa Fe In refusing to ren**- w Its contract with the Armour Refrigerator Car company, in view of the decided shortage of all classes of freight cars. This official said he expected that there would be considerable difficulty in mov ing seed potatoes this spring. The Santa Fe's action, however, may result in the sending of a number of re frigerator cars to the Northwest, and this will solve the problem to some ex tent. The situation in regard to cars for gen eral business is gradually becoming bet ter. QUESTION I« REOI'EXED. Supreme Court Reverses Lower Court in Colorado Case. DENVER, Feb. 11.—The impression that the Colorado court of appeals in reversing the decision of the district court of El Taso county, which dismissed a suit against the Denver & Rio Grande Rail way company for damages resulting from the fire which destroyed much property lr Colorado Springs on Aug. 10, 1898, de cided that the railway company was re sponsible for the losses entailed by the lire proves to be erroneous. The court of appeals has merely decid ed that the lower court erred In limiting the plaintiff to one of four causes of ac tion named in the complaint and in ex cluding testimony which was offered. The effect of the decision is to reopen the question of liability for damages result ing from the fire. J. X. Hill Goes South. .1. N. Hill left Monday for an extended trip through the South.
