M'HENRY'S NEW JOS
Will Be Chief Engineer of
the Canadian Pacific
System
EFFECTIVE ON JUNE 1
He- Formerly Occupied a Similar
Position With the Northern Pa
cific Road, hut Resigned Seven
Months Ago.
Upon Edwin IT. McHnry's arrival In
fit. Paul yesterday from a six month's
trip abroad it was announced that the
former chief engineer of the Northern
Pacific had accepted an offer from the
Canadian Pacific to occupy a similar of
fice with that road.
It has been known in railroad circles
JOHN F. CARROLL, MAKER OF TAMMANY ADVIS ORY COMMITTEE
'■ ~
Although Richard Croker formally announced that he had retired from politics, New Yorkers refuse to give full cred
. ence [ his assertions. John F. Carroll, one of ehe prominent district leaders, believes the time opportune to make Croker*a
retirement decisive, and to make hinisel f leader of the Tammany forces in a short time.
ever since Mr. McHenry resigned from
the Northern Pacific some time ago that
he had received a I'm be. of flattering
offers from some of the largest systems
in the country, and there was considera
ble speculation as to which proposition
ha would accept.
Just about seven months ago Mr.
McHenry resigned from the Northern Pa
cit>c, and he has spent the interim in
travel in China and the Phlippine isl
ands. He will go to assume his new du
ties on June 1.
A man prominent in the engineering
department of the Northern Pacific said
yesterday, in speaking of McHenry's ap
pointment, "It will be something of a
surprise to his many friends, and the
Canadian Pacific is to be congratulated
in securing so able a man for the posi
tion. Mr. McHenry is well known and
exceedingly well liked throughout the
country by railroad men generally.
"His new field is an extensive one, the
company operating 7,489 miles of road.
He will have a good chance to exercise
all of his excellent abilities as a chief
engineer, as the prospects are that the
road is contemplating a number of exten
sive betterments in the near future."
Mr. McHenry was very successful in
constructing roads in the mountainous
districts for the Northern Pacific, and,
in fact, it was this line of work that
wen for him his position as chief en
gineer.. He will have considerable' work
,: this character to do with the Canadian
Pacific.
In the course of his railroad career Mr.
McHenry has patented a number of use
ful devices in railroad equipment. He
is a thorough student of the construction
of railroads, and his new appointment
promises to give siatisfaction both to
himself and to the Canadian Pacific.
EASTERN TRAFFIC IS LIGHT.
Roads Notify Agents That Car Situ
ation Is Busy.
A number of the roads east of Chicago
have sent OJt letters to their representa
tives all over the country calling th«ir
attention to that fact, that the car sit
uation at the present time is easier than
it has been for years, and as a result
they are in position to furnish cars for
any quantity or kind of freight.
They also call attention to the fact that
the situation will undoubtedly get easier
right along, and they urge upon their
agents the importance of looking after
freight matters a little closer and en
deavoring to keep their tonnage up to the
standard set in former years. In each
case they contend that as long as rales
are now being maintained sby all lines
tiny ought not have any trouble in se
curing a fair division of freight traffic
from the different territories represented.
The principle reason given for the num
ber of idle cars at the present time is
on account of the coal strike in the an
thracite and bituminous coal districts
and the light demand for cars in this lo
cality, where heretofore there has been
an exceedingly large-demand. They also
argue that it is not particularly any one
locality that is falling off in shipments,
but it seems to be general all over the
country. -".-■'
Nearly all of the Eastern lines are look
ing with considerable uneasiness into the
future, and are already commencing to
try ' and evolve some method whereby
any unusual falling off in shipments can
be averted. They argue that it is not
necessarily the rates that are responsible,
but if it should appear that they were
prohibitive, and that shipments could not
be moved on basis of present tariffs, a
rechecking of the territory would be
taken up and rates made that would be
satisfactory.
They, however, do not believe that this
will be necessary, as they are firmly of
the opinion that the present rates are
satisfactory, and that the lull in business
is but natural after such an extended
length of unusual activity in all lines of
trade. The matter as it now appears is
one of considerable importance to ail
Eastern lines. '
NO COMPROMISE OX MERGER.
President Hill Says" Matter Will Re
Left to the Courts.
ST. LOUIS Mo., May James J.
Hill, president of the Northern Securities
company, who has been inspecting Bur
lington terminals here, left at 8:30 a. m.
for .St. Paul.
With reference to the 'Wall street re
port that efforts were being made look
ing to a compromise of the so-called
merger suit, Mr. Hill said:
"There is nothing whatever in that.
We are content to leave that matter for
the courts to decide. We have confidence
in the courts, and are satisfied that the
case will be fairly decided. We own the
property and no one can take it from
us."
IMPROVEMENTS AT WATER RFOXT
Land Is Graded Off and the New
Sheds Are Nearly Completed.
The local water front presents quite a
different appearance to what it did a
few months ago. The gang of workmen
have completed the grading of the front,
and it is now smoothed off, presenting a
very favorable aspect.
The boat season has opened up in earn
est, the recent rains having improved the
outlook wonderfully by raising the river
to a very comfortable depth.
At the union depot the new shed is up
and the men are at work roiling it, while
another crew is busy laying tracks under
the shed. Tho freight houses that were
moved by the betterments are all in
place and the whole section presents a
very busy appearance.
The depot will be greatly enlarged and
improved by the additional trackage and
shed room, and the company proposes to
continue to better the facilities as the
increasing business demands it.
Illinois Central Man Promoted.
Fred E. Place, master mechanic of .the
Illinois Central shops at Waterloo, lowa,
has been promoted to the same position
at the main shops of the company at
Burnside. Mr. Place will be succeeded
at Waterloo by G. W. Smith, of the
Santa Fe.
Morgan Not in Canadian Pacific.
NEW YORK, May Reports coupling
the "Morgan-Hill interests" with exten
sive buying of Canadian Pacific stock are
flatly denied by a representative of the
Morgan banking house.
"We have absolutely no interest in the
affairs of the Canadian Pacific road,"
said Mr. Morgan's partner.
Hot Ten Minutes for All.
"Private" John Allen was strolling
down Pennsylvania avenue in Washington
the other day, when he passed a lamp
post to which was attached a person
who had imbibed not wisely, but too well.
The man was bowed over and holding
on with both hands. If he had stepped
a little nearer he could have leaned his
body against it, but apparently he did
not dare to make the step for fear of
. losing his balance. As Mr. Allen ap
proached the stranger mistily made him
out. and hailed him. Mr. Allen stopped.
"M'fren*," said the afflicted one, with
difficulty, "c'n you hie—poor invalid
where the B. & O. depot is?"
"It is right over in that direction,"
said Mr. Allen, pointing, "about ten min
utes walk."
"Temmints walk?" repeated the suf
ferer.
"Yes." -..
"D'you mean," incftUred the man, "for
—hie—for you or for me?"— New York
Times.
Had Indorsement Enough.
Representative Alexander, of Buffalo,
went to the White house recently with
his arms full of petitions, indorsements
and recommendations in behalf of Adam
Rinewalt, of Buffalo, a candidate for the
consulship at Fort Erie, Ont., just across
the Niagara river from Buffalo.
"What does this man want?" asked the
president, looking at the great mass of
documents. ,-* . - ->'\ v - o"V.--*. •.
"He wants to be consul at Fort Erie,"
replied Mr. Alexander.
/"Is that all?" said the president, ap
parently much relieved. "I didn't know
but that he was after the secretaryship
of state."—New York World.
Might Be Saved Yet.
Will Moody, son and successor at
Northfield of the late Dwight L. Moody,
tells the following story apropos of re

THE ST. PAUL GLOBE, TUESDAY, MAY, 27, 1902,

to address a somewhat austere individu

him on the shoulder, he put the usual
question: "My brother, are you a Chris

"Sir," was the reply—and perhaps with
a shade of Impatience— am a professor

But this only seemed to call for re

equal to it.
