FEAR FOR SAFETY OF FIVE GIRLS IS FELT They Disappear and May Have Been Attacked by Negroes EBENSBURG, Pa., Aug. 21. — Five girls, two daughters of Frank Cassi dy, of Altoona; two daughters of Rob ert Cassidy, of Ebensburg, and Miss Rumford mysteriously disappeared from here yesterday afternoon and have not yet returned home. They left the Cassitly home to go to the •cemetery to plant flowers. With them they carried baskets, intending to gather a few berries after completing their task. When they failed to return home last night searching parties were or ganized and kept up the search all night without discovering . the lost ones. They were last seen leaving the cemetery at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and some time after that three ne groes were seen going out the same road the girls had taken. This fact has given rise to the fear that the girls were attacked by the negroes. Others believe they are lost in the mountains. ATTEMPT TO SWIM ENGLISH CHANNEL On e Man Comes Out of the Water and Holbein Keeps On Paddling DOVER, Aug. 21.—Three swimmers are attempting to cross the straits of Dover— Montague Holbein, "Jack" Haggerty and . S. W. Greasley. Holbein, who has made in the last few years four attempts to swim the channel, entered the water in a fifth attempt at 4:36 p. m. today, start ing from near Lydden Spout, westward of Dover. Haggerty started from Ad miralty pier here at 6p. m. This is Haggerty's first attempt. Greasley will take the water at high tide tomorrow morning. They expect to achieve the feat within twenty hours. There is much popular interest in the attempts, owing largely to the fact that each swimmer represents a London news paper and that the three papers have boomed their respective contestants for several weeks. Haggerty and Greasley are unknown quantities and are making their first attempts, while Holbein, on account of his persistence in previous plucky efforts, is the popular favorite. He is forty-three years old, Haggerty is thirty-eight and Greasley thirty-three. They have all been in training for some time.
