After much parleying the lock to the door was destroyed and water from a fire hose was turned on the desperate man until he was subdued. E. church continued today. The reports of commit tees show an increase in benevolent col lections and church membership. The M. E. church was crowded to its utmost capacity when Prof R. S. Lovinggood de livered his address on the education •of the colored race in the South. He pointed out the many . ways iji ..which his race could be benefited .and many of their Through education only, he said, would the colored race be lifted from its present condition. - That there are many "low-down and mean negroes" in the South he admitted, but he claimed that many of them were brought to their present condition- by many "low-down and mean" white men. Prof. -.Lovinggood is a graduate cf one of the Freedmants colleges, he being a member of the Freed man's Aid society, and is now a profes sor in Sam Houston college in ■ Austin, Tex. V., Sept. 29.—As the result .of-District Attorney Coalworth's investigation of 7 charges of . alleged "grafting*" on the part of city offi cials, three present aldermen and four former.: aldermen have been indicted. All the indicted men were arraigned today and pleaded not guilty. Bail was fixed at $1,500 each and was fur nished by all.
