UNSETTLED WEATHER RESTRICTS BUSINESS Settlement of Fall River Strike Encouraging — Woolen Goods Higher NEW YORK, Jan. 20.— R. G. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade will, tomorrow, say: Progress is more rapid in manufacture than in distribution, but this is largely due to the effect of unseasonable weather at some points and the unsettled feeling in the south, where the collapse of cotton prices has retarded collections, and caused many cancellations. That production is maintained by mills and furnaces may be taken as evidence of confidence in the future. Iron and- steel plates led in activ ity, with wollens the feature in textile fabrecs. Settlement of the protracted labor struggle at Fall River is encourag ing, but the industrial atmosphere is dis turbed elsewhere, although, on the whole there is less than the customary idleness for this season. Prices of newly opened lines of woolens are higher, as was to be expected in view of the position of the raw material, but consumption is not curtailed. Similar strength in footwear has restricted busi ness, buyers in the Boston market report ing few contracts. Railway earnings for January thus far show a gain of 2.3 per cent. Foreign commerce at this port is also better than a year ago. the last week showing gains of $1,555,889 in value of imports and $292,986 in exports. Iron and Steel Firm Scarcely any alteration in quotations of iron and steel is the best possible- guaran tee of continued activity. Conservatism now controls the situation, holding prices at a position that is attractive, consider ing the volume of business and cost of production. Coke ovens are establishing new records of fuel output and traffic conditions cause little delay. Very exten sive contracts for machinery are pending, and a considerable quantity of pipes and tubes are wanted, while the Pittsburg mills are behind on deliveries of billets and bars. Tin plate mills are not only fully engaged, but have orders running well into the future. Structural steel and rails are quiet, although large contracts are pending. Hides are still firm as a rule, except that some declines are recorded on packer native, as these constitute the bulk of current receipts. This is a seasonable influence and does not detract from the general tone of strength. Failures for the week numbered 335 in the United States,, against 358 last year, and 24 in Canada, compared with 33 a year ago. i MIDWAY HORSE MARKET Minnesota Transfer, St. Paul.
