;FOR WOMEN READERS Ii UNUSUALLY SMART TABLOID OiSTUHE FALE gray will be the predominat ing color wherever there is a gratheiing of smartly gowned •women, attired for the street or visit ing. Such a long period has elapsed since there was any marked vogue for this modest shade that there seemed little likelihood of its reinstatement. Fashion called for rioting tints and What place could anything so demure fis pearl gray hope to fill under the clr- cumstances? But fashion is ever fickle, bo it is far from surprising to learn that the Quaker color is now about to be sent forth into the world to again play a rival part to the myriad gayer colors the winter made smart. The largest sphere in which grays will rule ii» the outdoor one. Athletic costumes and everything in the way of sporting: gowns wili be tinged with sil ver if they make even the slightest at tempt at being chic. The tones will range from light to very dark and the majority of open air exercise costume* •will show a mixture instead of a plain nhadp. Tweeds are ever serviceable und good style, but serge has again rome into its own. and is built into the most stunning short costumes that we have set forth to tempt the fair. Im ported serges are expensive, but they give such excellent satisfactltwi that it is manretoa% to think they have es caped the dressmaker's eye for so lone;. One of the newest athletic costume* in which the harmony of grays is to be observed has a short plaited skirt of an Invisible small plaid. There are broad box plaits separated by groups of nar row side ones. .The jaunty little coat is 6hort and rounded at the fronts more like a tuxedo than a woman's garment. This is made of pale gray serge and is stitched on the edges, is provided with it generous supply of pocket flaps and possesses a set of mannish looking notched rovers. The only thing that could possibly be worn under such h coat and not spoil its whole effect is a etiff linen collar and chemisette with a fcemi-fitted vest of some contrasting color, bright blue, scarlet or white. But gray is not to be confined en tirely to this class of feminine costume. Not at all, if one is to draw conclusions from the number of orders already sent in for handsome long skirted street and visiting gowns. What would the fair pecker after novelties and ultra smart ideas in dress say to the following: First, a long graceful skirt arranged over the hips in several well shaped gores and flaring modishly at the feet; «i simple surplice bodice crossing over p vest and stock of white guipure striped with tiny frills of white chif fon: the surplice idea repeated In the back so that the vest continued down In a point there also. Around the arms and shoulders no gathers or plaits broke the smoothness ©f the surplice, but in the front toward (he waist the material arranged itself Into a few plaits held down by a very Ijroad suede belt fitted with a large Square leather covered buckle. The edges of the surplice were bound with a flat braid, and clusters of three tiny ornamental straps tipped with small silver buttons were grouped on each side. At the bottom of the high stock, which was of guipure, appeared a very narrow cravat of cloth tied in a stiff knot at the throat. At the elbow, where the gigot sleeves terminated, the cloth section was sup plemented by a long tight cuff of gui pure wrinkled on the silk foundation and buttoning closely to the wrist. The top showed a narrow frill of lace ex tending around the arm. Here was the only sign of fullness and even a slight departure from the essence of simplic ity in design, yet it dresses up the right style of woman better than fussy gowns do. When a woman becomes so enamored of princess styles that nothing else suits her taste, it is a complex problem to create something for her to wear on the street. After serious study, hovv- HEALTH AND BEAUTY THE PLAIN WOMAN'S QUEST Bhe wasn't a particularly vain woman. us women go, and he wasn't a quack, or even a beauty specialist. Still, after he bad run through the inevitable round of <iuestions, he saw there was something more to come, and this was what it*was: The woman Bat forward a little In her chair and looked straight into the doc tor's eyes. ■I did not come to you because I thought I was sick." she began, "al though you seem to think I am. but be cause I'm tired of being so plain. I didn't used to -be so. As a young girl and young woman I had bright eyes :md n sweet complexion, however impossible it seems now. I'm not old enough to look as dowdy and homely and unlnter esting as I do. I want you to make me prettier— not pretty; that will never be again —but not so conspicuously unro mantic looking. Do you understand?" The physician, being a wise man, the husband of a wife and the father of grown up daughters, did understand. "You don't have to explain or apologize for your reason at nil." he said, quite kindly, lixing his attention on the handle pi ;i oueeer old bronze paper knife that lay on his desk. "And—no. I'm not Btnillng. much less laughing, at you. I do not see anything to laugh at in a woman's wish to be pretty. She ought to •wish it. She would not be a normal woman if she did not wish It. "Why don't you begin to practice for beiiuty before your glass? A woman can cultivate almost any expression she wants. Arrange your fea tures before the mirror, practice holding them the way you look best, and in time the expression will become natural and automatic. If the lius are thin do not press them together so they form a straight line across the face, but hold them so they only touch lightly and they will have the effect of looking' fuller than they are. "Nothing Is more attractive than a strong, direct gaze. To look your man full in the face is to exert a certain power over him. whether he is a burglar or your husband, or only the butler. "But no one can maintain a direct, calm glanc with weak, strained eyes. Bathing the eyeballs in a teacup of tepid water, salted till it tastes about as salt aa tears, rests and strengthens them. A i-'iiil way Is to open the eyes over a tea cup filled to the brim with salt water. "Most of the eye waters consist chiefly HAND SAPOLIO Is especially valuable during the summer season, when outdoor occu pations and sports are most in order. STAINS, MUD STAINS and CALLOUS SPOTS yield to it, and it is particularly agreeable when used in the bath miter violent exercise. v ALL QROCERS AND DRUQQISTS ever, a chic costume was proffered, with the result that it is being copied, with certain modifications, for women who have no special fondness for the one piece gown. Here it is: A walking skirt with small plaits at the sides and a plain panel in front. Over this a jacket having basques at the back and a pointed vest. The princess part makes its appearance at the shoulders, where two long graduated box plaits start rather broad, then diminish to ward the w.'iist and grow wider again to create something for her to wear on as they descend to the bottom of the of rosewater, with a pinch of boric pow dn. A good eye wash Is made by sim ply dissolving a teaspoonful of boric acid in a pint of water that has been boiled. Strain and keep closely bottled. Sop the eyes with it morning and night and sev eral times during the day, pouting out a little in a saucer and applying with a bit of antiseptic gauze or a bit of clean, soft old linen. Always use a fresh rag. and pour out fresh wash from the bottle every time you bathe your eyea. "The eyes are a very important part of the face. Handsome eyes will make an otherwise homely face attractive. Cultivate your eyes. If you don't mind my saying so. I think you open your eyes rather too wide. If your upper lid droop ed just the fraction of an inch over tli> eyeball the effect would be pleasanter. Just try it when you get home, and if you conclude I'm right practice it till it becomes second nature. "Your complexion needs only a little more, vitality to make it at least passable. While you are taking my tonic and going through your exercises, I advise you to try conscientiously to get more" vigor into your face by doing as many neck and breathcing exercises as you ran manage. Your face will uever plump out. I can tell you, while tin- supply of blood is so scanty. Pump the blood' into your head by vigorously bending your head to the front, then back, then to the- right side until your ei*r almost touches your shoulder, and then to the loft side. •"There's nothing new in that, of course Only do it, that's all. "And. my dear girl, make a point of getting enough sleep and enough air." His patient lifted up a protesting hand. "You tell me you have been taking sleeping powders, you have to get up and heat milk for yourself in the small hours, and you have to read yourself to sleep, and all that. If you could only see your self after a month of good nights, passed In healthy -sleep, nerves and mus cles all relaxed, why, you would not know yourself. "You should make a point of being asleep by 10 o'clock. Whenever you can, slip off to bed shortly after dinner, und let 8:30 find you in bed.
