Heinemann, of Chicago, a mem ber of the Heinemann Lumber Co. which operates mills at Warsaw, Wis., was in town several days this week. His com pany has a large crew of timber esti mators in the woods here looking over a tract of timber owned by Akely & Sprague. Mr. Heinemau said that his company would close the deal for the tract in case his men found the amount of timber claimed by Akeley & Sprague. This is one of the largest tracts of timber in the county. In case the deal is made the Heinemann company, which is one of the wealthy concerns of the country, propose to build an up-to-date sawmill in Grand Marais, and a railroad back into the timber country. While here Mr. Hinemann procured the names of all the owners of lands in the neigh borhood of the Akeley & Sprague lands and will endeavor to purchase all the surrounding timber in case the deal for, the tract mentioned is consummated. This proposed purchase by the Heine mann company i§, we believe, a matter of great importance to the village of Grand Marais as it means the manu facture in this village of several hundred million feet of lumber, which would necessitate the construction of a large sawmill and the employment of a large crew of men for several years, both at the mill and in the woods. It would mean the construction of a railroad from Grand Marais back into the timbered districts which would be of vast im portance in the development of the .county and would eventually give us a connection with the two lines of railroad now proposed to be built through the county. A Move in Mineral. In our last issue we reported the presence in town of Mr. Robert J. Kerr representing the North American Iron Co .. who have large mineral holdings in this county. Mr. Kerr was very reticent as to the intentions of his company but it has since been learned from good authority that the. company is making preparations to begin extensive opera tions in this county. A few years ago the company did considerable explor ation wcrk on their'lands in 65-4 west— particularly in the old Paulson mine— but at that time*they were not ready to open up the mines. It is now said that the company has ample financial backing and that there is no doubt but that they intend opening up mines as soon as the necessary leases can be setenred from parties holding minor interests with them these fee owuers have been called to Du luth to confer with representatives of the company with a view to getting these matters in shane^ The recent developements in the process of smelting ore by electricity, as reported in this paper not long ago, haB given an added impetus to the iron in dustry.and has rendered valuable mil lions of tons of ore that were heretofore considered of little value. With this process both the titanic and magnetic ores can be smelted to advantage which makes certain the value of large deposits of ore in this county that were hereto fore considered by some as of question able value. The fol= lowing is accordingly hereby published: State of Minnesota, Office of Forestry Commissioner. St. Paul, MitiOi, March 15,1906. The law of the State of Minnesota for the preveniion of fore|f and prairie fires makes it a" misdemeanor, punishable by fine of not exceeding one hundred dol lars or imprisonment in jail not exceed ing three months, to kindle afire near forest or prairie land and leave it un quenched. County attorneys are to assist in prosecutions. Every person must comply with a war den's call for assistance unless he has justifiable excuse. Neglect to comply with any of the foregoing duties incurs the penalty first above mentioned. Destruction or defacement of a posted notice incurs similar penalty. Raiiroac companies are required to use efficient spark arresters on their locomotive engines, keep their right of ways clear of combustible material (except ties), post warning placards conspicuously at every station in the vicinity of forests and grass lands, and extinguish any fire occurring near their roads subject to forfeiture of not exceeding one hundred dollars for eacL offence. Fire wardens are responsible for the enforcement of the- law in their dis tricts.
