Of course if you and your neigh
bors begin to talk about putting a
plan into execution by which you
may be independent of a fuel fam
ine next winter, somebody will bob
up with all kinds of argument to
discourage the plan. If you have a
plan to that end, go to it, because
the objector usually has an ax to
grind.
A brilliant meteor was observed
in the heaven early Tuesday even
ing by several parties in this city.
The meteor appeared to come from
the southwest and explode without
noise a little north of town.
This was probably the same meteor
observed at Topeka, Kansas, St.
Joseph and Kansas City.

Those Austrian Strikes.
Whether the labor and other
troubles reported from Austria
Hungary are anything more than
sporadic outbursts will have to be
determined by future developments.
They may be suppressed by the iron
heel of despotism, as similar dis
orders within the Central Powers
have been. Just now the ruling
Powers in both Austria and Ger
many are doing everything possible
to improve the morale of their
people by promises of increased
I food supplies to flow from the Rus

with the other Allies to follow the
big thrust on the West
Austria is very near Russia, how
ever, and the increased boldness of
the Socialists in the former country
would indicate that the Bolsheviki
doctrines were taking root across
the border. The discordant elements
within the Austrian Empire would
fly apart in a moment if they
thought the prospect for success
was good. What are the Entente
propagandists doing to bring about
result? If there is any field where
the Allies have made a sorrier
showing, considering their potential
superiority of resources, than in a
military way, it is in their failure to
use the forces of internal disorgani
zation as skillfully as the Germans

We have no disposition to mini
mize the importance of the action
of the government in ordering the'
registration of all alien enemies.
This should have been done at the
time we entered the war. But we
greatly fear that even this move
will not put a stop to the machin
ations of the enemy in this country,
from the fact that his readiest tools
are not aliens, but citizens of this
country. The alien is an easy per
son to watch, but the traitorous
citizen sometimes baffles the best
efforts of the police. And, bumili
ating as it is to admit it, we have a
number of these. Some of them
would doubtless balk at actual se
dition, yet every day of their lives
they are aiding the cause of the Hun
They kick and knock and find fault
of every act of our government,
and if they were men of weight
their pessimistic influence would be
disastrous Happily for the country,
however, the great majority of our
people are loyal, and they soon
place these gentry where they right
fully belong outside the pale.

Boys In France.
The die la cast; the boys are now
on foreign soil; they have been sent
to defend the nation's honor in the
greatest hour of peril; they have-

against autocracy.
"Hope springs eternal in the hu
man breast." yet many a home will
be called upon to make the great
est sacrifice of their earthly career
the placing of some loved one or,
the altar of liberty. The mothers
darling, the sweet heart's ideal may
be sacrificed on the field of Fland
ers, but be will not have lived in
vain. The modern Attilla, second"
scourge of Europe, has unsheathed

dominate the world.
The army, which is composed of
the flower of our manhood, realize
their grave responsibility, yet they
shirk not the call to duty. They
are imbued with the same spirit
that permeated the victorious
legions of Washington. They pos

tenacity that caused the defeat of
the Persian hosts on the Plains of
Marathon. The spirit of Ceasar's

We must be prepared for great
sacrifices; we must not let reverses
dampen our ardor. The utter anni

must not belittle our antagonist, for
he is a worthy foe.
Old Glory has been unfurled on
the battle-scarred plains of France,,

Did Thriving Business.
A tramp with a bright idea ar

Corder Journal He bad no money
and followed the railroad ties from
Slater. Just before reaching Glas
gow he espied a big patch of jimson
weeds, and here his originality
cropped out. He discovered that
the jimson weed seeds resembled
onion seeds and he gathered a good
supply. Arriving in town, he ob
tained a couple of fine white onions
and proceeded at once to sell his
ttfd in tmall packages, exhibiting
tbe inicne as txemples. He did a
thriving business and left town at
iiifbt ty rail, well supplied with
