Was It Oversight or Accident?
The newspapers can generally
be depended upon in getting at the
truth of matters of general interest
but it sometimes occurs that the
press in the unlimited exercise of
the privilege of free speech allows
designing persou to "put one
over on it."
A glaring instance of this was
seen 8 few months ago when al
most the entire press of the coun
try joined in a mighty wail against
senators and representatives in
Congress, because as the editorial
writers express it, that body had
enacted an income tax law and
had exempted the members of that
body ' from the provisions of the net.
It finally transpired that there was
nothing to it. It is strange, in this
case at least, how such a rumor

writers. We imagine that many a j
country quill pusher is trying to!

Emma Goldman, the anarchist
passed through St. Louis last week
on her way to Jefferson City where
she will spend two years in the
penitentiary for disloyalty. Emma
was convicted some months ago
but her sentence has just been con
firmed by the supreme court.
The high cost of living will kindly
take a rear seat while the cost of
high flying takes the floor. Today
bids are asked by the Government
for five aeroplanes to deliver mail
between Washington, Philadelphia
and New York. The machines,
each capable of carrying 300 pounds
and traveling not less than 200 miles
without stop at a speed of 100 miles
an hour, fully loaded, must be ready
for delivery April 25- This aerial
service from Washington to New
York is to be permanent. A special
postal will be charged not exceed
ing 25 cents an ounce. The letter
carriers on this service will not be
impeded by any traffic.

Corn mills in Missouri have been
instructed by the United States
Food Administration to supply
borne trade first, according to a
telegram to F. B. Mum ford, federal
food administrator for Missouri.
"Missouri has the best quality of
corn grown in the United States
thia year." the telegram said. "All
your corn mills have been instruct
ed to supply home trade first. This
should give you every advantage in
getting substitutes and we trust you
will hold fast to the terms of the
President's request, as this will sure
lv effect saving of wheat flour."
The serving of pork by-products
in any form on porkless days will
not be permitted, Mr. Mumford an
nounced. This includes lard. Nu
merous inquiries have come to Mr
Mumford from lunch counter pro
prietors asking,if pigtails, pig ears,
pig feet, and the like could be serv
ed on Saturday.
A Sad Affliction.
A sad affliction has fallen upon
the family of Mr. Mitchell, a farmer
living a short distance northwest of
Laclede. Of a family of eight chil
dren, the eldest but 17 years of age
who recently returned from Kansas
City, died from an at tick of measles
followed by pneumonia last weeK
two of the remaining children died
from the same diseases Saturday
and were buried Sunday, and an
other died Sunday night and was
buried Tuesday. At this writing the
four remaining children are suffer
ing from the same disease and at
tending physicians h we litte or no
hope for their recovery. Brookfield
A Shelby county man is of
opiniou that his 34 Rhode Island
Red' hens have done right good
work is producing 465 eggs during
the month of January, and Mrs.
Wid. McDill of the same county is
thoroughly of opinion that Rhode
Islands are not the only pebbles on
the beach, basing her opinion on
the fact that her 83 white leghorns
added 691 eggs to the egg basket
during the same month all of
which serves to show that the Mis
souri hen does not take a lay off on
account of chilly weather but con
tinues to lay on, and "aigs are aigs"
at this particular time.
In the matter of building up the
town every citizen, and especially
every property bolder should con
sider it a personal matter. When
the growth (of the . town and the
consequent rise in real estate values,
the property owner is the chief
beneficiary and it is self-evident
that anything tending to advance
the community should be a pure
business consideration with him
