Col. Ud. II. tirown, one of the
founders of Kith Hill and one of the
orgmitcts of the Rich Ilil! Coal
j Mining Company, dropped dead in
Kansas City. Knf, last Saturday,
while on a iit to a itrr vho rc
sides in tht city. Heart diae
was the cause of his death. He
leaves a wile and several children,
all grown.
Col. Brown was bom in Bridge,
ton, Maine, Aug. jj, 1S33, and at
the time of his death was in the 69
year of his apr. When a mere boy
he began to earn his own living and
soon drifted into the life of a rail
roader from running the engine to
building the roads themselves. In
1SS0 he set his head to building the
Lexir.gton and Southern branch of
the Missouri Pacific road that now
runs lrom Kansas City to Joplin,
which resulted in the building of
Rich Hill and the organization of
fue Rich Hill Coal Co. He under
took the building of the Rich Hill
and ElDorado road and laid out the
town of West ElDorado. The road
was heavily traded ready for the
ties, but by some mischance otheis
interested in the project failed him
and the road was not built, but
others have since profited by his
work.
His home was in Girard. Kans.,
and he was one of the organizers ol
the Midway Coal Company, and
was one of the company when be
died. He was first married at Dra
Moine, Iowa, in December, 1S50,
to Miss Eleanor Ay re, who waa a
sitter to Mrs Frank K. Gillett of
this city. His second wife survives
as bis widow.
Col. Ed Brown was quite active
in politics, more or les, all his lite,
and an ardent Republican. He was
generous to a fault, open hearted,
and bad a wonderful faculty of
making friends. His 'unera! took
place at Girard, Kanvas, Tuesday
afternoon.
