"I am do advocate of lynching
or of mob law, but 1 would rather
see a community wrought to the
highest pitch over crimes that
would seem impossible this side
of bell than to remain apathetic,"
was the declaration of the Kev.
Dr. W. A. Bartlett, at the First
Congregational church, io Chicago
in a prelude on "Lynching, From
Another Point of View."
Dr. Bartlett said among other
things:
"I have seen so many sermons,
editorials and resolutions denoun
cing lynching and mob law that
one gets the impression that the
citizens who hang or burn the de
stroyer of life, home, and all that
li held sacred by womanhood, are
the race offenders rather than the
monster whom they destroy.
"We seem to be so absorbed
with the majesty of this vague
term 'law' that the notion appears
to prevail that the criminals are
those who do not wait for legal
processes, and the violator of
womanhood is the abused party.
"We shudder at the torture of
thi criminal who is burned, but
apparently forget to shudder for
the innocent girl, whose mentJ
and spiritual agony is ten-fold
greater than that of the fire. This
ia not a race problem, except so
far as one race are the offenders.
The white man who commits the
came crime is just as guilty.
"The indignant uprising of a
community, and some ot the best
men in it, to avenge a wron of
such awful magnitude may be tech
nically lawless, but the spirit which
causes the uprising is the reflect
ion ol a higher civilization. There
are crimes so dreadful that the
pure and the chivalrous and the
strong find it well niitli impossible
to endure the thought that such a
degenerate should pollute the earth
by his piesence. It is easy to the
orize about the anaiciiy of mob
law, but the same hand which pen
ned the calm editorial mi-!i be the
first to grasp the torch if it was a
mother, wile or daughter who was
the victim.
"1 say that when ou look at a
lynching from another viewpoint it
is simply the bursting forth of an
indignatiou and loathing that will
oof be checked. lo the Old
Testament days they maJe short
vvuik of such an offender.
"Lynching is certainly a bad
method and forms ihn habit of dis
order and makes men Lloodtbir sty.
Cut if it is to be avoided there
certainly is tailed for tuuie sure
and speedy trial of these wit-tciies,
who often brazenly deny crime
arn id red tape of legal ;rocetei,
but confess abjectly when con
fronted wild determined into. ft
is useless to bring to trial good
men who rise up t protri their
firesides. The community wid
not bear it. If men object lo be
ing tunned let i he-in cease from
ciimct which make a nation sick."
