Riven, and the column moves from
the hill. There is no regular align

holding of the ranks within close
compass and touch a 'rout step,'
in fact. There is no general ; there
are no subordinate officers; bnt
such in the sympathetic nnitr that
they seem to more in reponeto

warrior is a law onto himself, the
law so binds and animates and
compels all alike that the end of
an organized cohort are served.
"Assault, battle and pillage fol
low quickly npon the sortie. The
objective point of the march is not
far away. A hundred yards dis
tant is a FuHcan village. The
route thereto lies across the edge
of a prove, over a footpath, along
a fallen tree, under whose shelter
and shaded by tnf ta of grass is the
devoted commune. It is feeble in
umbers, and there is a bare show
of defense as the freebooters hurl
themselves npon the hill and
plunge into the open gates. The
Tillagers flee At the flrat onset

Well, yon see, ma'am, the first

"What do you mean bv the first

I mean the first lady to buy a

"!low many yards of thread

Or lea u Times JeinK-raL "There
is an interesting question for you
alien yon have nothing elm to
think about. You would be sue
prised to know, I ddre say. I do
not know whether any of the in
sect exjerts have ever made ei
eriraent8 with a view of de
termining how many vards of
thread a spider can pin, but if
they have not they have in my
judgment overlooked an interest
ing point in the spt.h-r's life. I
caaght one of the smaller kind in
my room the other day, and for ful
ly three quarters of an hour I
tried to exhaust the supply of w eb
the little fellow had about him. bttt
to no avail. I made all kinds of ef
forts to force the spider to spin
himself out of thread. The chief
method was to gt the insec t to
crawl upon some object, like my
bat, for instance, atid tfien shake
him off, forcing bin to swing by
his web. Itr jerking the thread
which I took on my hand I was able
to force the spider to spin and en
roll his web until he would get
tired and fall to the floor. Thn I
would pick him up again and go
through the same process. I kept
thi np for at least tbreeiuarter
of an hour, and the fnwect seemed
to have some web left when I con
cluded to give the task ap for the
time. How many yards of thread
I forced the spider to unroll I do
not know, but caVxnreyoq t i.a t
It was not a small quantity. If
stretched out I suppose it would
have been long enough to reach
several city blocks. Of course, the
threads were of a very tine and
fragile sort. I observed another
interesting thing while making
this little exjriment, and that
was that the sipder was capable of
making a few observations as he
went along. He Jc:rr.e-d a thing
or two. For Instance, at first I
nsed my hat in order to get the
spider from the floor by placing it
directly in front of hint and thus
forcing him to craw 1 upon it. This
worked all right for awhile, but
soon the little fellow began to get
on to the situation and be quit
taking to the hat. Try as I would,
I could not get him to crawl upon
the hat. Whenever I would place
the hat in hi path he would fly
into a perfect rage, fold and unfold
his feelers, pull himself up In a
wad. roll around the floor and
show other nnmistakable sign
of madness. He was simply fu
rioua, Directly be felt the same
way about the piew of cloth 1 used
to get him from the floor. Ucason?
Well, I should say it wa reason,
la a higher order of life, and I do
not see why you should not call it
the same thing in spider life."
